Mrs. Holf, offcial feacher of Class 308-8, is a graduafe of Hunfer College. Alfhough she has faughf a number of English classes, her lirsf love is French, which she really wanfs fo feach. She fakes keen enioymenf in fhe fheafer and fhe opera as well as in reading. She is very pafienf and undersfanding, re- minding us in fhaf respecf of our former official feacher, Miss Sergenf, who refired lasf year. Miss Sergenf came fo Evander in l9l6 and for over fhirfy years devofed herself fo her feaching, spending long hours affer school preparing and correcfing work and helping sfudenfs who had gof behind in lessons or behavior. We miss her. Mr. Ross of Class 308-8 is a Cify College graduafe who decided in his Senior year fhaf he would enioy feaching as his life work more fhan anyfhing else. He says fhe greafesf safis- facfion he has had comes from meefing ma- fure and infelligenf men and women who claim fhaf fhey have been influenced by his feaching. His fwo children are bofh married, and he and his wife spend fheir spare 'lime af operas and concerfs, as bofh are ardenf music lovers. Mr. Ross sfill plays fhe violin. He was fhe organizer and conducf of fhe firsf evening school orchesfra in N York. fhaf of Morris Evening High School. Miss Terres of Class 3ll-8c is new fo Evander. Young, fall, and handsome, she seems fo imparf a new vigor info her official class. She feaches commercial work, and affer school she pracfices whaf she feaches by be- ing a secrefary. She enjoys fhis work and wanfs fo help fhe commercial sfudenfs here fo enjoy fheirs when fhey gof iobs. She is inferesfed in music and fhe fheafer. Her secref ambifion has always been fo excel in aesfhefic dancing or fo ioin a professional group of folk dancers. She is now working for a higher degree in Business Educafion, buf she dances when she can spare fhe fime. Many Evander girls know Mrs. Lippman fhrough her arf weaving classes as well as fhrough Official Class 323-8. She is a New York Cify woman educafed in our schools. Reading and arf needlework fake up mosf of her spare fime. Her elder daughfer, a Wellesley graduafe, sfudied law on a scholar- ship af Columbia, while her younger daughfer sfudied journalism af fhe Universify of Missouri. Her opinion of Evanderifes is very encouraging, for she feels fhaf fhey will be good and useful cifizens, and fhaf fhey are a very wholesome group. Among her memories are lhose ol a year's leaching in Turkey, a year's sludying and lravening during which she visiled English classes in mosl ol lhe capilals ol Europe, and a visil wilh Dr. Einslein. Her hobbies are cooking, reading, lislening lo classical music and yes, lhe ORIOLE. A leacher who has been slimulaling and helpful bolh lo her Official Class and lo her English sludenls is Miss Moress, prelecl ol 25l-8. She allended Fordham, N. Y. U. and Cornell Universilies. Her main ambilion was always lo be a doclor, bul because she loved children, she decided lo enler upon a leach- ing career. Those who have been lorlunale enough lo be in her English classes know how excellenl her leaching is wilh ils syslem- alic organizalion of lhe work, enlivened by her dry humor and vivid melaphors. During her vacalions, Miss Moress has lraveled widely. She knows lhe Uniled Slales, Canada, Lalin America, and she has visiled mosl ol I5 lhe counlries ol Europe. Mr. Cheilman ol Class 253-8 is a leacher ol Spanish beloved by all lor his kindness, under- slanding, imparlialily and his willy phrases. A graduale ol C. C. N. Y., he also sludied al Fordham, N. Y. U., Middlebury College, and lhe Universily ol Madrid. He majored in Romance languages. During his spare lime, he allends lhe opera, lries his hand al ama- leur radio work and lislens lo his colleclion ol classical records. He is a singer as well as linguisl. His summers are spenl on his 'Farm in Maine where he linds plenly ol lime lor nalure sludy, bee-keeping, and fishing. He remembers wilh pleasure his six lrips abroad during which he visiled every corner ol Spain and lound Paris his grealesl delighl. Seiior Cheilman also leaches Spanish conversalion in lhe Evander Communily Cenler. As lo his sludenls he says, Treal lhem like human beings and lorgel lhal you are lhe leacher. A graduale of Cily College and ol Columbia's Teachers College, Mr. Tulera is now recipienl ol lhe doclor's degree al Teachers College. His secrel ambilion was always lo become a wriler. She has walched Evander develop and feels lhal she has had fhe opporlunily lo develop wilh if. Miss Gorfein, who replaces Miss Shapiro, is now Prefecl of Class 322-8 and feacher of commercial work. Golf, swimming and lhe ballef are some of her main inleresls. She loves lo lravel, especially in America. New England is her favorile seclion of lhe counlry. Being new in Evander, she says she is oflen quile brealhless and somelimes even speech- less. Mrs. Tiesler, guardian angel of Class 348-8c, was born in Williamsbridge, righl here in lhe Bronx, and slill lives in lhe house in which she was born. She has a bachelor's degree from Hunler and a masler's from Teachers College, Columbia Universily. Her hobby is growing and arranging flowers. She loves her home and her housekeeping, bul she also loves her school work. She has been guidance counselor a number of limes. Teaching, she says, brings a salisfaclion lhal commercial work can never bring, for a leacher can help young people find lhemselves and can help lhem grow, iusl as a gardener helps flowers grow. She likes old-fashioned music and new- fashioned office managemenl. Mrs. Eslernaux of Class 353-8 is one of lhe friendliesl leachers we have known. She loves lo keep in louch wilh members of her classes afler lhey have leff for fhe wide world, and so if is appropriale lhal she should be facully adviser of our Evander Childs Alumni Associalion. Al Adelphi College, Mrs. Esler- naux was a philosophy and science major. She look graduale work in science al Cornell and Columbia and did research al fhe Cold l7 Spring Harbor Laboralories. ln her childhood she longed fo be a circus acrobal, bul her older sisler, who was a leacher, persuaded her lo lake up a more sensible career. She plays fhe flule and piano, collecls slamps and sall-and-pepper shakers, and loves lo dig in lhe garden al her Yonkers home. She has lraveled exlensively. Evanderiles will always remember her 'Friendly aflifude and her won- derful leaching. Dr. Schellhammer, Prefecl of Class 354-8a, is anolher leacher of whom Evanderiles are parlicularly proud. A specialisl in biology, he is also a psychologisl, al leasl he handles Evander's prolesfing elemenl wilh unusual in- sighl and effecliveness. We have never known a beller leacher. During lhe war he was a colonel in lhe paralroopers division. Afler lhe war he had lo organize fhe surrender of many German lowns and army unils. He claims lhal organizing Evander's Marshal Squad gave him experience. He lives in Wesl- chesler where his chief inleresls are garden- ing and helping Mrs. Schellhammer bring up lheir lwo children. Mr. Sukoenig, Class 403-8RA, allended fhe Cily College School of Business and lhen wenl lo Teachers College, Columbia Uni- versily, where he maiored in commercial edu- calion. He slarled his career as an accounlanl, bul decided lhal leaching gave grealer salis- faclion. He enjoys his work al Evander, bul he feels lhal fhe Evander of I938 wilh ils high scholarship and deporlmenl was a beller school lhan fhe presenl Evander. An ideal sludenl, he feels, is one who excels in scholarship and deporlmenl, and also lakes an avid inleresl in exlra-curricular aclivilies. Mr. Sukoenig is well-known lo all Seniors for his efficienf and prompl work in gelling fhe ORIOLE pholography done. Oulside of school his chief inleresl is his young daughler. Mr. Young, a former Englishman, is in charge of Class 409-8. He is a member of Phi Bela Kappa and a graduale of Cily College cum laude. He is a happily married man wilh lwo sons, aged len and seven.
