To Dr. Hymen Alpern, our beloved Principal,
we owe fhe peculiar delighffulness of our
school. Scholarly, foleranf, kindly, and appreci-
afive, Dr. Alpern is a person whom we respecf
and love. He was educafed bofh locally and
abroad, winning a diploma in fhe Cenfro de
Esfudios in Madrid, and degrees of A.B. af
Cify College, A.M. af Columbia, and Ph.D.
af New York Universify. He became a feacher
in I9I7 and head of fhe Modern Language
Deparfmenf in DeWiH Clinfon High School
in l928. He came fo Evander as ifs Principal
in I934. Thaf was Evander's greaf luck.
Having, in his earlier days, prepared fo
follow his fafher's example as preacher, Dr.
Alpern furned fo a more secular fype of feach-
ing when he fell' fhaf if offered a chance of
reaching more people. He has been acfive
in religious fields, having been associafed
wifh fhe Zion Youfh Commiffee, fhe Na-
fional Conference of Chrisfians and Jews,
fhe Founfain of Cafholics for Human Brofher-
hood, and fhe Williamsbridge Chrisfian
Communify Cenfer. He pracfices folerance.
He is fhe accomplished aufhor of several
books and a hosf of arficles: he won fhe
Firsf La Prensa Prize for fhe besl' book of
fhe year in l926, and fhe besf arficle of fhe
year in l927. His books include "Educafion
of fhe Superior Sfudenf" l935, and "Comedias
del Siglo de Oro" I939. A few of his many
arficles are "Personalify Problems in High
School Adminisfra+ion," "Liferary and Cul-
fural Values." "Guillen de Cas'lro," and
"Training for a World We Wanl' fo Live ln."
Also he has wriffen fhe Foreign Language
Conference reporfs since l940. He edifed
"La Tragedia por los Celos." and served as
advisory edifor of "Secondary Educafion,"
fhe lal"l'er since I943. ln l944-45 he was
edifor of "El Eco." ln every way, he's fops.
"A perfecf woman, nobly planned

Mrs. Egan of course, Evander's charming
Dean of Girls. Small, blonde, well-dressed,
dainfy, Mrs. Egan combines feminine charm
wifh infellecfual and adminisfrafive abilify.
She is soff-spoken, friendly, and firm, and wifh
all her sympafhy and undersfanding quife im-
possible fo be bluffedl She has a flair for
guidance. Her chief inferesf, she says, is her
husband, who also is in personnel work. She
feels fhaf a woman can combine home and
professional life if she has fhe abilify fo plan.
Mrs. Egan loves music and reading. When
she graduafed from fhe College of New
Rochelle she planned fo fake up journalism,
buf she was offered a iob as subsfifufe feach-
er, and found fhaf she enjoyed 'leaching foo
much fo change. She was Guidance Counsel-
or and college adviser before she became
Dean. Her greafesf safisfacfion is in helping
Dr. Brophy, Dean of Boys, may be fhe bane
of fhe exisfence of some few unusual boys,
buf he is respecfed and admired by all who
work wifh him, especially in his popular public
speaking classes. He has degrees from Cify
College, Columbia and Fordham Universifies.
He facefiously claims fhaf he fook up feach-
ing and pursued his sfudies fhrough his doc-
forafe iusl' 'lo spife a feacher who underrafed
him. The mosl' oufsfanding fhing in his career
he believes is fhe friendship he has found
everywhere. His oufside inferesfs are bridge
and music. Whaf frembling culprif would be-
lieve fhaf Dr. Brophy is bofh a singer and an
organisf? He composes, foo, we undersfand.
Surely a man of such versafilify musf be very
inferesfing fo himself as well as fo his family
and friends. When asked his opinion on Evan-
der sfudenfs, he replied, "No commenf: l don"l'
wanf fo incriminafe myself." Buf we have a
sneaking suspicion fhaf he likes us.
