BOUT twenty years ago a retiring young man reported in Fordham Annex and said that he had been appointed teacher of English. My first impression was that this sensitive soul had anxious days ahead ol him. It was easy to misjudge his un- demonstrative sell-etlacement. Aln the years since then he amply demonstrated his rare qualities. Although he taught many pupils who expressed themselves unsocially in other rooms, he never had to malce discipline records. His classroom seemed to he characterized hy a calm indus- try in which the plan of procedure just did not malce itself conspicuous. I never heard him raise his voice, utter a sharp rehulce, or deviate from refined courtesy in dealing with pupils or his fellow teachers. Noise, loustle, confusion, incisive dictation, and explicit domination were foreign to his temperament. A He consistently maintained an unwa- vering respect lor the sanctity of every individuality. This universality in attitude, accepting what is with a will to nurture that to its hest development hespealcs a generous mind. Pupils quiclcly recognize and find satisfaction in its sympathetic understanding. So we applaud one's judg- ment when he says, UlVlr. Blauvelt was the best teacher I ever had. A Even prolonged illness could not lorealc his poise and even temper. Too few ol us had the good lor- tune to know him well, but the few who have enjoyed him and his worlc feel a deep sadness at his passing. Let our final greeting he: Hail and farewell, good friend of every child. CLAYTON G. DURFEE
