Nof fhe grandiose Tennysonian sfyle of poefry, for even fhe Edifor found if mighfy dif- ficulf fo read fhe ldyIls of fhe King, buf 'lhe simple, pleasanf, iingly fype of poefry fhaf everyone loves. By wrifing Knocks and Boos+s in fhe form of rhymed couplefs and by inserling poefry info our liferary works, we have fried fo change from fhe prosaic drabness of long-winded prose fo fhe whimsical, flowery charm of poefry. For fhe pasf eighf monfhs, fhe Oriole Sfaff has labored in fhe finy Publicafion Office 'til fhe lafe hours of fhe affernoon, fo produce fhis, your Oriole. Sfarfing earlier fhan any of our predecessors, we sfrove fo make fhis fhe bes'l' Criole Evander has yef seen. Our goal was fo bring fo you in fhe mosf delighfful manner, fhaf which was mosf represenfafive of your class. Characferisfic of our glorious class which is desfined for fame in all fields, we have fried nof 'ro be foo serious, buf rafher earnesfly jolly. We have fried fo exemplify fhe spirif of good-fellowship and scholarliness fhaf is affribufed fo us. We have fried fo give you 'lhose ifems fhaf would be of mosl' inferesf fo you. The excellenf pieces of poefry, by some of our more falenfed classmafes, lend fhe only serious nofe fo our book. We fhink fhey are mighfy good pieces of arf. Our class song, we're sure, will bring back pleasanf memories of our senior dances and our Promenade. The Perfecf '36 is iusl' a cross-secfion of fhe grand and glorious Senior, while fhe Lasf Will and Tesfamenf is fhe very las'l' word of fhe deparfing seniors. Our one difficulfy, which we hope we have overcome, was fo be imparfial, frank and sporfsmanlike in confribufing remarks abouf you and your classmafes. We hope you will accepf fhem wifh fhe good humor wifh which fhey were given. Subiecf fo bofh praise and derision none of us are infallible. We hope you feel fhaf way, foo. PASTORAL X R 5 E Perhaps fhe one momenf fhaf carries fhe mosf seriousness comes when we pause in refrospecf-as a fraveler abouf fo sef forfh on a long journey, furns fo 'lake a lasf lingering look af his home. To fhe more senfimenfal, fhe glance backwards may bring a fear, a choking voice or merely dimmed eyes. ln all cases, however, if is as fhough you had opened fhe gafes of your being fo a fide of sadness and regref. lf is fhen fhaf your soul is swepf away by a sea of memory, and fhe salf of your fears smarfs each wound. Buf 'l'hen, fhere is so much pleasure in remembering fhaf if is easily worfh fhe sorrow enfailed. lf would be cusfomary for one delving info fhe pasi' fo begin af fhe very inifial day. Buf nof so in our case. A greaf number of our class, coming from Junior High School and fhe annexes, enfered Evander in fhe fhird ferm. We were really well info our fiffh and sixfh ferms before we consolidafed info a group. Unfil fhen we had wandered abouf bewildered, frying fo form sfrong connecfions in our new and sfrange surroundings. We were amazed fo find an absolufe dominafion by fhe freshmen and sophomores of fhe acfivifies usually arrogafed fo fhe upper fermers. lf seemed fhaf fhe Seniors held fhemselves so aloof fhaf fhe lower fermers had an oppor- funify 'lo usurp fheir fradifional privileges. Our exploifs as individuals during fhis early parf of our school career are even forgoffen fo ourselves, perhaps because fhere was nofhing so very individual abouf fhem. During our fhird year Capfain Appleiack was presenfed on our sfage. Besides being a remarkable success, if broughf fo our affenfion fhe many oppor- funifies open fo fhose inferesfed in exfra-curricular acfivifies. lf was during fhe sixfh ferm of fhe class, fhaf fhe firsf dancing club was organized, under fhe supervision of Mrs. Esfernaux. The ferminafion of fhe ferm saw our firsf and mosf successful class dance. The gym was gayly bedecked wifh balloons and fhe embryonic Ginger Rogers and Fred Asfaires were given fheir opporfunify fo display publicly 'ihe Terpsichorean Arf which fhey had masfered. They danced, and gave grafeful fhanks fo fheir in- sfrucfress and fo fhe assiduous commiffee which had made fhe dance such a complefe success. The sevenfh ferm broughf info fhe limelighf Leon Varfessian, newly elecfed Presidenf of fhe Arisfa, under whose compefeni hand, fhe Arisfa enjoyed a highly successful ferm. Then came fhe sha'Hering of precedence. For fhe firsf fime in a greaf number of years, fhe Presidency of fhe Senior Class wenf fo a girl, Anneffe Hochberg. Lafer on in fhe ferm came 'lhe organizafion of fhe Presidenfs' Club, a club incorporaf- ing fhe many presidenfs of all Evander Clubs info a single group. The close of fhe sevenfh ferm saw fhe class well implanfed in exfra-curricular acfivifies. They had dis- covered Evander for fhe firsf fime, and deeply regreffed fhaf fime was so shorf, fhaf fhey had nof previously parficipafed fo a fuller exfenf in several acfivifies. The new class governmenf had begun so well 'l'ha'I' eyes looked upward, upward fo fhe Hall of Fame where fhe class of June '36 would emblazon ifs name. The very beginning of fhe eighfh ferm saw fhe class again and again shaffer precedenfs as ifs members gained many nofeworfhy disfincfions. The Evander News, fhe Bridge, and fhe Bios all fook firsf places in fheir respecfive divisions of fhe Columbia Scholasfic Press Review Confesf, while Scriba 'look second place in ifs divi- sion. The frack feam ran off wifh Nafional Cify-Wide frophies wifh Mackenzie Wash- ingfon and Al Mauriello casf as fhe sfellar performers. There followed fwo class dances in fhe gym, fl1e Sf. Valen+ine's Dance which caused many a resolufe hearf fo weaken, and fl-le Sf. Pafrick's Dancewhich saw fhe gym engulfed in a sea of green and each Senior adorned wifh a shamrock in honor of lreland's Pafron Sainf. Perhaps fhe mosl' discussed Senior evenf was fhe elecfion of Senior Celebrifies. The Celeb Dance fol- lowed in fhe gym and fhe class honor-bearers were infroduced fo fheir acclaiming public. The disfribufion of picfures for fhe Oriole was also an occasion of excifemenf, wifh many cries of approval and occasionally a call for consolafion. Senior Frolic Day wenf off successfully, fhe fheme of fhe cosfumes being liferafure. Anofher elecfion saw Anneffe Hochberg insfalled as Dean of Girls and Ed Cappucci as Dean of Boys, fo fake fhe place of Miss Cunilfe and Mr. Findlay for a full day during Senior Week. The Prom, held of fhe Waldorf-Asforia, saw fhe sophisficafed seniors in all fheirrglory. This never-fo-be-forgoffen affair was also a record smasher, as if was fhe firsf fime fhe high school ever held a Prom in fhe Grand Ballroom of fhe Waldorf- Asforia. Growing Pains , fhe Varsify show, supervised by Mr. Friedlander, was a fif- fing climax fo a ferm replefe wifh memorable incidenfs. T And so we review, rafher skefchily perhaps, buf wifh open eyes, fhe four years we have spenf in Evander. We can see as vividly as if if were yesferday our firsf day wifhin fhese porfalsg and in a flash, as if were, four years have passed! Truly, fhey have been glorious years, glorious in fhaf fhey have been crowded wifh inferesfing and worfhwhile acfivifiesg glorious wifh fhe wealfh of richly inspired learning upon which we were permiffed fo feasf our minds: glorious in fhaf fhey have fosfered friendships born in wholesome and pure surroundings: in fine, glorious years fo be freasured and cherished forever. ' Commencemenf is over, and we face fowering gafes, gafes fhaf are overwhelming, awe-inspiring, and forbidding. We fremble, we furn, we are inspired fo run back fo fhe genfle and guiding arms of our Alma Mafer. Buf we cannof run back. We do noi' belong here any longer. We are alone, aparf, free-acfing and self-respon- sible. lf is fhen we are reminded fhaf sfrong bonds of friendship exisf beyond high school, and fhaf we are nof fo be isolafed in our new life. We furn once again, ioin hands wifh our friends, and face fhe gafes. Liffle did I realize, when I arose on fhe morning of June 2l, I946, fhaf on fhaf day I would be faken away from my humble posifion as Presidenf of Efro- Oldwyn-Ayer, Inc., and placed in fhe pages of Muzzey's immorfal hisfory. I, who had always been sick on fhe merry-go-round, found myself acclaimed and fefed by fhe enfire world. If was unbelievable, and yef if acfually did happen! The evening before I was fo become Desfiny's Child I aH'ended one of fhose Hollywood Par'ries af 'I-he home of Eleanore Morse IMoskowifz in fhe old daysl, America's greafesf sfar since Garbo Iosf her popularify by reducing fhe size of her feef. Well, fo go on wifh my sfory, iusf as I opened my good eye, fhe ofher having been closed by foo much egg in an egg nog, fhe Televisaphone sounded. Wifh a mighfy yawn fhaf spelf of midnighf revelries, I pressed fhe buffon af my side. From a screen af fhe foof of my bed, a huge beam began fo glow unfil in a few momenfs I disfinguished fhe face of Capf. Arnold Gross, head of fhe Gross School for fhe Pro- mofion of Aviafion in China, fhe Bronx, and poinfs Easf. Hello, Mor'I'y, he said in an anxious fone, I called up fo fell you fhaf in one hour I am sfarfing on my one day rockef flighf around fhe world. I wanf you fo come along as one of my passengers. Be righf down, old man of fhe skies, said I, and wifh fhaf I swifched off fhe confrol, furned over and wenf back fo sleep. Before long, Mussolassie, my Efhiopian bufler from Harlem, came in and awakened me. I dressed hasfily and arrived af fhe field iusf as fhe rockef plone Evandah was abouf fo fake off. Affer faxi-ing wildly across fhe field, I iumped info fhe cockpif and was soon seafed behind co-pilof .Ierry Hayflock, and on my way fo fame and forfune. Ten minufes Iafer found us descending upon Hawaii. We sfopped for a few minufes fo re-fuel our heafing sysfem. Glancing abouf Waikiki Beach, I noficed a crowd of people vigorously applauding some cenfer of inferesf and complefely ignoring our plane. Now, I have an insafiable curi- osify, and realizing fhaf I had only a few minufes in which fo amuse myself, I joined fhe crowd. There, I mef fhe surprise of my life. In fhe midsf of fhis enormous fhrong was Helen Davivas, exhibifing whaf fhe well-dressed Hawaiian woman would wear. Wifh a company of fwenfy-one mannequins, among whom I recognized Dorofhy Toil, Bernardine Blessus, Evelyn Wilewifz, Fay Kahey, Terry Lemfresh, and Marie Zobbone. Helen was parading fhe lafesf fashions in grass. My fime was up. So I refurned fo fhe ship, hopped in, and soon found myself walking along fhe crowded sfreefs of Peiping, whose fraffic sysfem I noficed was almosf as bad as fhaf of Evander Childs H. S. from which I had graduafed I0 years previously. Suddenly, I noficed crowds of nafives hurrying fowards a public square af fhe end of fhe sfreef. When I reached fhe square, I discovered someone sfanding on a corner, ardenfly speeching in English 'Io a mass of Chinamen. On closer observa- fion, I realized fo my amazemenf, fhaf fhe speaker was none ofher 'Ihan Sob Baloschin, who was giving a folk on fhe value of efficienf noise makers in a Chinese New Year's Celebrafion. Assisfing him in fhe disfribufion of fhe samples was his everfaifhful cousin Janeffe. QSIDE Af fhis momenf I fell' a grip on my arm and before I knew if, we were winging on fo Vienna. I was sfanding in a corner of fhe airporf fhere, medifafing and reminiscing when, suddenly, I heard fhe sfrains of music. From ouf of the blue Viennese sky fhere seemed fo come a voice from fhe pasf. I recognized fhe voice, and yef, could if be? I followed fhe direcfion from which fhe melody seemed fo come and was led fo fhe radio in fhe airporf resf room. I enfered iusf in fime fo hear fhe announcer say, You have iusf heard Miss Dorofhy Hafchefman, world famous soprano, coming fo you over sfafion WUSA. Miss Hafchefman was broughf fo you fhrough fhe courfesy of fhe Mildred Gurfh Opfimisfic Cigar Co. This greaf voice was accompanied by Horfense Kresbin, who once puf fhe King of England fo sleep on fhe piano. Now leaving Vienna far behind, I was soon seafed comforfably in my room in fhe rockef ship, peering anxiously from fhe windows, and waifing fo cafch a glimpse of fhe lighfs of fhe new Trifle Tower in Paris. I had nof long fo waif. Wifhin four' minufes I was sfrolling up on fhe sfreefs in fhe famous Lafin lllll Quarfer of Paris. If seemed fhaf fhe parlicular secfion fhrough which I was walking was lined on bofh sides of fhe sfreef wifh Iiffle brownsfone houses. In fhe windows of fhese houses were small signs which informed one of fhe occupafions of fheir inhabifanfs. If ere you wish a rhyme or fwo, we charge as liffle as a sou.-Gladiese Elkin. I If your disposifion cause you alarm, come fo me, l'lI give you charm.-Aneefa Peffei. If af fhe ball like a horse you prance, come inside and learn fo dance.-Shirlie Messere. Refurning fo fhe landing field we sfarfed on our lasf fhrilling hop over fhe Aflanfic fowards home. Twilighf was descending on fhe greaf Mefropolis when we landed af fhe Floyd Rennerf field. In a blaze of glory we were hailed by fhousands of specfafors who had filled fhe airporf fo cafch a glimpse of us. Mayor Irving Black, accompanied by Molly Swelf, Iafely crowned Miss Universe, personally greefed us, and we were escorfed fo fhe Abrams-Asforia hofel by his gracious colleague Eddie Paccucci, fhe good-look- ing Treasurer of fhe Cify of New York, appearing very prosperous wifh a big black poIifical cigar in his moufh, and accompanied by his charming secrefary, Helene Specinere. Af fhe hofel we were besieged by reporfers and phofographers clamoring for an inferview. As spokesman for fhe parfy, I confinually refused fo be inferviewed unfil I heard fhaf Irene Velvef, a Congresswoman from New York and also Edil'or-in- Chief of Esquire was among fhose seeking an inferview. A ' The nexf morning, as a climax fo our flighf, we were given a recep- fion af Washingfon. There we were decorafed wifh fhe Cross of Honor by fhe Presidenf of fhe Unifed Sfafes, Anneffe Highmonf, fhe firsf woman presidenf of our counfry. She delivered a magnificenf speech commending us for our bravery and courage in complefing our proiecf. Affer fhe Presidenf had finished speaking, fhe dignified Secre- fary of Sfafe, Thomas Beacon, infroduced Admiral Bernard Day Widow, Secrefary of fhe Navy, who affer years of efforf had finally culfivafed a man-sized handle-bar musfache. If was a sighf so vivid 'Ihaf if will remain a living picfure in my brain long affer many ofher hisforic episodes of my flighf are unforgoffen. xi-43-'or X W 3..w.- jbzfxff QvSf '3f'f Qydiffffifnf ANNETTE HOCHBERG, PRESIDENT N I 5 E O ,p 5 HELEN DAVIS, VICE-PIQES. BENNETT A 'w gx Q Lg 1HE 36 When I firsf decided fo creafe an average Senior by conducfing a poll, I debafed as fo whefher or nof I should spend several monfhs in an insane asylum in preparafion for some of fhe crazy answers I was sure fo gefg buf I finally decided fhaf affer four years in Evander, I could sfand anyfhing. Expecfing fhe worsf, I asked Senior affer Senior fo sfafe his views on various fopics. Affer spending monfhs fabu- lafing vofes, your inquiring reporfer arrived af fhe following conclusions: While all fhe Seniors prefer fhe more advenfurous fype of film, fhey like fhe sfaid and dignified acfors besf. The boys admire fhe acfing of Charles Laughfon, while fhe girls are affracfed by Leslie Howard. Believe if or nof, Clark Gable received buf one vofe and fhaf from a boy. The boys veered away from fhe more alluring acfresses, and casf fheir Iof for Kafherine Hepburn, while fhe girls were inclined fowards Ann Harding. Tasfes ranged all fhe way from Mickey Mouse fo Shirley Temple. Dead End and Tobacco Road , while looked upon wifh disfavor by fhe censors, were given firsf and second place respecfively in fhe ballofing for a favorife play. When if came fo choosing a favorife song, however, a real problem presenfed ifself. I finally came fo fhe conclusion fhaf if was hopeless. Wifh fhe choice resfing befween fhe Hungarian fhriller, Gloomy Sunday and fhe New Year's Eve favorife, The Music Goes 'Round and 'Round , I decided fo flip a coin fo see which was fhe Senior's favorife song, and fhe laffer fune won. Each Senior seems fo have his or her favorife feacher, as over sixfy feachers were represenfed in fhe ballofing. However, Messrs. Shamus, Sexfon, and Dlugafz received more vofes fhan fhe resf, and deserve fhe somewhaf uneasy fifle of our favorife feachers. Our prospecfive graduafes find fhaf even affer eighf ferms, lunch and sfudy hall have losf none of fheir fhrill and sfill refain fheir fifles of our fwo favorife subiecfs. As you musf have already suspecfed, Physical Training assumed fhe fifle of fhe mosf disliked subiecf in fhe school. Our composife Senior girl spends mosf of her spare fime reading and dancing, while fhe boy's inferesfs vary over a wide range of subiecfs. He plays baseball, baskefball and foofball when in season, and when if rains he sfays inside and reads a good book or plays Monopoly . His pef aversion is being sfopped in fhe halls by one of fhe Q men lMr. Quimby's Flying Squadl, and being forced fo gef a pass. The girls, as in fhe days of yore, sfill prefer fhe good old fashioned he-man fype, especially fall, blond foofball players. The boys like 'em beaufiful, even if dumb. While fhe average Senior says he received knowledge and a culfural background from school, some only gof headaches and ofhers didn'f gef anyfhing. Twenfy years from now, fhe average Senior expecfs fo have fwo children, a boy and a girl, bofh of whom will nafurally go fo Evander, and, upon looking over old copies of fhe Oriole, will wonder af whaf sfupid dofards fheir parenfs musf have been fo answer such silly quesfions as fhese.
