T e ,Albee Stadium The Albee Stadium is a decided asset to the Eureka High School, not only as a place for athletic events, but as a spot of beauty and interest- About five years ago the present Albee Stadium was a swamp surrounded by a mass of tangled shrubs and trees. N o one thought of its possibilities until George B. Albee, the City Superintendent of Schools, realized the splendid opportunity it afforded as a site for a stadium. At first Mr. Albee's plans were laughed at, but finally enough men were convinced of the possibility of constructing a stadium, so the work was begun. The underbrush was cleared away, the swamp drained, and over 50,000 cubic yards of dirt were put on the bottom of the stadium in order to level it off. It is well drained by a large culvert, thirty inches in diameter into which flow thirty laterals from six to eight inches in diameter. Lawns have been grown on the football field and on the hillsides. On one of the hillsides are placed very large red letters which spell Albee Stadium . This carries out the school colors, red and green. As it now stands, the Albee Stadium is 280 feet wide and 907 feet long. In the upper end a space is left for an amphitheater, while at the lower end is a baseball diamond. Between the baseball diamond and the amphitheater is a one-fourth mile track. Surrounding the stadium are trees native to Humboldt County, the redwood, cedar, pine, fir, alder and oak. There are three main entrances to the Stadium. One which has azaleas on each side, is designated as the Azalea Way. Another entrance which has rhododendrons on each side is known as the Rhododendron Way. The main entrance is lined with cedar trees, hence it is called Cedar Way. - Thus, this beautiful addition to the Eureka High School has bettered conditions by doing away with an ugly spot and bringing into existence a stadium of which the City of Eureka has a good reason to be proud. -Edith Carlson '28 15
