Save the Re wood League The Save-the-Redwoods-League to which this Sequoia is dedi- cated, was founded by nine members and two associate members. The founders are Mr. Edward Doheny, Mrs. Newell K. French, Mr. Edward S. Harkness, Mr. William Kent, Mr. Stephen T. Mather, Dr. John C. Philips, Mrs. Zipporah Russ, Mr. George Fredrick Schwartz, and a Resident of Massachusetts whose name is not given. The associate founders are Mr. Edward E. Ayer and Mrs. Wm. H. Crocker. The other members in the League are 26 patrons, 163 life members, 12 sustaining members, 571 contributing members, 3853 annual members, 109 junior mem- bers, and 470 donors. This makes a total membership of 5215. In California there still remains a stand of 881,393 acres of virgin redwood forest. Out of this total 13,597 acres are pre- served by state parks, national monuments, county parks, and city parks, while 2555 acres are preserved by private parks. This shows that approximately only 15 per cent have been preserved while there are still many miles of redwood highway the senic attractions of which should be saved. One of these places is the Dyerville-Bull Creek region in which the League is trying to establish a great Redwood Forest reservation to comprise nearly 12,000 acres. Another place is in Del Norte County on Smith River. This is five miles north of Crescent City and consists of 1000 acres. Toward the several mil- lion dollars necessary to purchase these parks, over three fourths of a million dollars is held by the League for the purchase of the Dyerville-Bull Creek region, and 36,000 have been contributed toward purchasing the Smith-River project. Mr. Edward S. Hark- ness of New York gave 350,000 to help purchase the Dyerville- Bull Creek region, and 340,000 was given by the California State Federation of Womens' Clubs, with which they intend to save a grove within the area decided upon. By interesting the public in saving the Redwoods, the League has gradually been able to preserve some of the best stand- ing timber, and, if the citizens give their support to the cause. a large amount of nature's most beautiful scenery can be saved for our posterity.-Howard Carlson 11
