Much work has been done to assemble this book, and we hope all of you will enjoy it. A yearbook portrays the total program of the high school and brings it into the home of the yearbook patrons and other people of the community. It describes and interprets the school in a manner which is not possible by any other device. A yearbook captures in picture and print the events of the school and personalities of its citizens, and it preserves them in rec- ords and memories for many years to come. i Last but not least, a yearbook ogers to those of the stag who worked hard to preserve its traditions, valuable training in special skills required in preparation of the book. More important, stag members gain training in the acceptance and fulfillment of responsi- bility representing one of the ultimate goals of a high school educa- tion. DEDICATION l During most of his past thirty-two years with Eureka High School, Mr. Edward L. Major has been symbolized with teaching his- tory and supervising each graduating class in processing their I-Iornet. He is an especially noted figure among students of the junior and senior level as he so sincerely endeavors to prepare these upperclass- men to meet the challenges encountered in whatever ideals they pur- sue after graduation. I-Iis vast knowledge covering many areas has effectively aided his unceasing efforts to present his subject material thoroughly to his students, who are indeed privileged to be able to accept the worth- while advice he so freely offers directly from a trusting wisdom. To this truly loyal supporter in rendering service beyond the call of duty, do we and the many before us owe much gratitude. As we dedicate this year's Hornet to Mr. Major, we question not his worthiness to be commended in such a way, but we must question our ability to do him justice in honoring his many achievements. The time is 2:35 p. m., a reminder which hurries these three seniors down the hall to their final class of the many they have attended the past four years. Although they might wish to, time Will not permit them to turn back. They must go on to their next ap- pointment in life's schedule which might mean hurrying down the hall of a big university or a small college, a hospital, a business firm, a trade school, or a home. Yes, as the graduating senior goes out on his own in the World, he may Wander down many halls in the future before he reaches the goals that satisfy him most. The Woodford County Journal EVERY THURSDAY -'Q ",, 1 Your next step may be worth 514-8,000 to you You've just received your high school diploma, and now you're at a crossroad. What will it be next . . . a college educa- tion, or a job? Your next step may be worth .S'148,000! A college graduate can expect to earn an average of 39,129 annually between the ages of 25 and 65. That's iB365,000 in 40 years. On the other hand, the man whose formal education stops at high school will earn 85,433 a year, or S217,000 in 40 years. Thus the difference-S,S148,000-is the amount a college education could be worth during the most productive years of your life. These are only average figures. But they point out how valuable a college education could be to your earning power. That extra income could mean a better home for you . . . a complete education for your children . . . a fuller, more re- warding life for you and your future family. And a college education can help you achieve rewards which may be even more significant than a higher income. You may gain a deeper understanding of people and history . . . and possibly a sharpened ability to appreciate the com- plex world around us. The experience of millions of people proves education is an investment in the future which will return many ad- vantages. The decision is up to you. What will your next step be? As Abraham Lincoln put it, "In all that the people can individually do for themselves, government ought not to interfere." This principle of independence, or free enterprise, has made America a land of plenty. It must be guarded continually, if the future is to bring still greater progress and increasing strength.
