one of the most enjoyable As sophomores they showed talent ln the l1ne
of dramatlcs for example The Slave Market the sophomore stunt 1n the
H1 J1nks and many students had leads 1n the operetta The Bells of Peau
As Junlors they had leads IH the school operetta The Lucky Jade

and successful year as Sophomores they felt well fitted thlg year to assume
the1r dutles as Junlors and to contmue the tradltlons establlshed by former
classes at E H S
The class partlclpated In and sponsored many of the school s outstand
Ing functlons The Junlor Senlor Prom AprIl 24 honormg the graduatmg
class was one of the most br1ll1ant dances of the year The Jumor Informal
Dance October 10 Was also very successful The Junlor act In the H1 Jlnks
and the class play Wh1mSy achleved hlgh places In school dramatlcs
Indlvlduals of the class have progressed very well On the athletlc teams
many Junlors ranked hlgh and have been awarded letters They have been
outstandmg In all the major sports Members of the class had Important
roles In Soma the school operetta Several J umors were elected to the
Mask and Dagger club and a large number were enrolled In the local chap
ter of the Natlonal Honor Soclety
The members of the Junlor class look forward eagerly to a promlsmg
year as Senlors They hope to uphold the standards estabhshed by the
graduatmg class of 1931

The club s purpose IS to create lnterest for golf 1n Eugene Hlgh School,
and to support the Eugene Hlgh School golf team
The club s act1v1t1es conslst of golf tournaments, and a yearly dance,
Wh1Ch Was held ln the latter part of May The tournaments held were the
handlcap and the ladder tournament The latter lasts all through the year,
through a SCFIQS of challenges among the members
Th1S year the golf club has the honor of helplng sponsor the Oregon
State Hlgh School Golf champlonshlp Th1S IS to be held at the Eugene Golf
and Country club Schools from all over the state have entered and It Wlll
be the largest hlgh school tournament ever held ln the state

a competent coaching staff Lee Weber Bert Kerns Frank Fassett Darold
Elkins and Paul Laffety make up the entire personnel of the staff In addi

Lee Webei deserwes much credit for the work he has done in his tvso
remembered foi their fighting spirit and good sportsmanship

In the next game w1th Marshfleld the team flashed more speed and
strength and at the end of the thlrd quarter was leadlng 12 to 7 Th1s
gave them too much confldence and a few mmutes later the Marshf1eld
team made another touchdown and won 13 to 12

chools had ever clashed ln a football contest U H S always a hard
flghter agalnst Eugene ln other sports also put up a good battle agalnst
them 1n football A touchdown ln the early part of the game resulted ln
the flnal score of 6 to 0 for Eugene
The next week the Purple team went to Bend Th1s game featured long
runs and passes Eugene s scores came ln the flrst part of the game and
the team later weakened because of the high altltude
The Lava Bears threatened many times but were held off and only
made 9 po1nts to Eugene s 13 In th1s game Eugene was weakened by
1nJur1es to several of the players

made three long runs Wh1Ch ended ln touchdowns Many new men were
used 1n th1s game At the beglnmng of the second half wlth the score
14 to 0 Eugene came back to score seven po1nts But all hopes were lost
down Eugene then weakened and Corvalhs won 26 to 7
At Salem Eugene met a heavy fast team and lost 38 to 0 Eugene was
outclassed 1n every department
Thanksglvlng Day Eugene played Everett Washlngton there and re
C91V6d a severe beatlng As 1n the two precedlng games Eugene showed
poor tackllng ab1l1ty and Everett trounced them 75 to 7
Eugene galned some consolatlon however by be1ng the only team to
score on the Sea Gulls th1s year ThlS score was made when Eugene
passed 40 yards for a touchdown Everett s team was consldered one of the

County Hlgh School League champ10nsh1p and the Hendershott trophy by
tak1ng SIX games from her opponents UH1V6FS1ty H1gh School Cottage
Grove Hlgh School and Sprlngfleld Hlgh School w1thout a defeat
The 1930 team also defeated Bend Hlgh School and The Eugene Blble
Unlverslty twlce b8S1d6S breaklng even 1n two game serles Wlth the Ore
gon Freshmen and Salem Hlgh School Eugene Hlgh lost early season
games to Medford Hlgh School and the Oregon State College Rooks
C6C1l Inman d1d most of the pltchlng for Eugene w1nn1ng h1S game Wlth
the Oregon Freshmen and fin1sh1ng the season wlthout a defeat Inman was
asslsted 1n the box by Lorln Carmlchael Bud Brewer and Bob Dunn
Inman also won the Most Valuable Player award donated to the
school by Arthur Hendershott Polnts consldered 1n maklng the award ln
the order of thelr lmportance were vote of the squad battlng fieldmg
base runmng and scholarshlp
The events were scored 11ke a track meet wlth polnts for first second
th1rd and fourth places Inman won the vote of the squad and part of the
battlng and fieldmg honors John Mllllgan had the best battlng average
w1th a percentage of 410 Mllllgan was followed closely by Vadnals Dunn
and Hammer1ckson

The 1931 track season looked rather blue at the outset with no lettermen
left from the 1930 d1str1ct championship team However the boys expect
a fine finish despite handlcaps
In the Oregon State Relay Carnlval Eugene placed third IH the dlstance
medley race and Claude Bradway took second place ln the shot A week
later at Salem the Eugene boys surprlsed their followers by taking fourth
place 1n a field of 16 teams ln the Willamette valley meet E H S w1ll be
represented at the state meet at Corvallis by Bradway Hill Sprague
Bandy Humphries Griffin and Forncrook
In 1930 the E H S track team finlshed the most successful season ln
the hlstory of the school The best balanced team 1n several years was de
veloped by Coach Weber
Eugene took second place ln a triangular meet between Corvallis Al
bany and Eugene This was the first meet of the season
They came back to win the Willamette Valley meet scoring 54 points
whlle their nearest opponent Corvallis had 44
In the Oregon Relay Carnlval held at Hayward field Eugene Hlgh won
third 1n the half mlle relay third ln the shuttle low hurdles relay and
fourth ln the quarter mile relay
Eugene Hlgh won the State Track and Field meet held at PaClflC Um
verslty scoring 31 points
Sherwood Burr three year letterman won second place 1n the broad
Jump at the State Track meet held at Oregon State College
Letters were given to Burr Pennington Betts Hall Van Osdol Brown
Carey Clark Oliver Stoffer Torrence McK1tr1ck and Brownson for
their services during the 1930 season

Cameron and Clayton Van Lydegraf breast stroke Ford Danner and Ken
neth Llchty back stroke and Hale Thompson and Wllbur Turner dxvers
Turner won first place thls year 1n d1v1ng at the Y M C A Northwest
Swlmmlng meet IH whlch all teams of Oregon Idaho Washlngton and
BF1t1Sh Columbla were entered Thompson won the same event last year
All of the swfmmers except Thompson and Turner w1ll be back next

For the th1rd consecutlve year the Senlor class won the class basketball
tournament whlch was held prevlous to the regular basketball season
The senlor boys emerged champlons by defeating the sophomores 1n the
finals by the close score of 16 14
The sophomores won the rlght to take part 1n the finals by thelr vlctory
over the All Stars a team composed of lettermen and 9 A students whlle
the senlors ellmlnated the Junlors 16 18
Inter class contests were played prmclpally to glve Coach Weber a first
chance to get an 1dea of hls materlal for the school teams The tournament
also encouraged a larger number of students to take part 1n athletlcs

The volley ball season opened at the beginning of the second semester
Class teams were chosen and games were played for championship, the
sophomores Winning every game After the class games were played an
all star team was chosen from the three teams Miss Ethel Mason coach,
and student of the Universlty of Oregon scheduled two games With Unl
versity H1gh
In the games wlth University High Eugene High Won the two games
The first game was played on the University High floor and the second was
played on the home floor
Precedlng the last game a banquet was given the coach and the v1s1t1ng
team At this time M1ss Mason was presented with a glft in appreciation
of the coaching of the High School team Miss Dorothea Goodfellow, MISS
Fanme VIC Pierce, and Miss Francls Elizabeth Baker were guests of the

over the tlcket sales for some of the athletlc contests and greatly stlmulated
attendance Th1s was partlcularly evldent 1n the Corvallls football game
