Both Mr. Walter L. Edwards, Superintendent, and Mr. W. Brice Evans, Principal, have been administrators for this institution for seven years. Mr. Edwards began his duties as superintendent in 1952. His radiant personality has won for him the friendship of all EPHS students. Aside from his administrative duties, Mr. Edwards teaches biology. Mr. Evans has been a member of the staff since 1951. During his first year he taught mathematics and general science; coached basketball and football. He began carrying on the duties of principal in 1952. Mr. Evans' honesty and fairness with students will long be remembered. He has very capably instructed mathematics and science courses along with being principal. National Honor Society PAM McCALL SUSAN PROSSER SHARON SMERSH SHARNA BUTLER DIANNE HERZOG JIM ROBY KAREN STOPHER JOHN CILCREST The Hidden Valley Chapter of the National Honor Society of Secondary Schools was a newly established organization in our school this year. The object of this chapter is to create an enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote worthy leadership, and to encourage the development of character in the students of Estes Park High School. Membership in this chapter was based upon: Cooperation. Emotions, Initiative. Judgment and Common Sense, Leadership, Personality, and Reliability. Candidates must have spent at least one semester in the Estes Park High School, and must be a member of the sophomore, junior, or senior class. They must have a scholarship average of B. The election of members to this chapter was made by a council consisting of the principal and four members of the faculty. When the candidates become members, they are entitled to wear the emblem adopted by the National Honor Society. If these people withdraw or are dropped from the chapter, they must return the emblem. Like all organizations they have dues and amendments, and officers are chosen at the end of each year for the preceding year. Mr. Evans serves as sponsor of this chapter. RALPH JOHNSON GEORGE MENARD RONNIE PLETCHER JANE WALKER MAUREEN WEST Quill and Scroll This year the Quill and Scroll International Society for High School Journalists had only two members, Carol Wurtele and Georg-anne Ulfers, who were accepted for membership last spring. These girls necessarily hold all four offices of the society. Carol is president and treasurer and Georganne is vice-president and secretary. In order to become a Quill and Scroll member there are five requirements to fulfill. The student must be of at least junior standing; must be in the upper third of his class in general scholastic standing at the time of election (for the current year); must have done superior work in some phase of journalistic or creative endeavor; must be recommended by the adviser; and must be approved by the executive secretary. There were no candidates this year who could fulfill the five requirements for membership. 35 Modern Music Masters Active members of Modem Music Masters this year were: Pam McCall, Anita Boothroyd, Donna Ewing, treasurer; Therolyn Morgan, secretary; Georganne Ulfers, vice president; and Ron Sherman, president. Fourteen members. Gail Howard, Dave Blanchar, Kay McKee. Adult initiates were Mr. Robert E. Shankland, chorus director; Mrs. Phil Martin, and Mr. John A. Williamson, band director. Qualifications for membership were based on these five points: Scholarship, character, cooperation, leadership. and service. Two other points that were considered were musical ability and participation. 36 Dance Band Trombones: Kenny Specht, Bob Gray, and Roby Cink Trumpets: Philip Citro, Mr. John Williamson, Sponsor; and Don Sherman Saxophones: Linda Duncan, Kay McKee, Dianne Herzog, and Therolyn Morgan 37 Girls’ Athletic Association Miss Dorothy Green, Sponsor BACK ROW (from Lett): Sandra Sutter, Pam McCall, Susan Prosser, Donna Michael, Pat Kremenak. During the half-time of the game with LaSalle October 31, the junior high band marched on the football field. The queen candidates, Kay Prosser. Mozelle Laughlin, and Dianne Van Horn were driven in a convertible around the field. The Homecoming dance was the biggest attraction of the day. The theme of the dance, Blue Indigo was carried out in the decorations, with snowflakes and an igloo, which served as the throne for the King and Queen. The false ceiling, of various shades of blue, gave the dance a chilly effect. The highlight of the evening was when Kay Prosser was crowned queen and Dick O'Connor crowned king. They were chosen from these candidates: Kay Prosser, Dianne Van Horn and Mozelle Laughlin, Dick O'Connor,Ray Sahm and Ron Sherman. The king and queen were crowned by master-of-ceremonies, Steve Smersh. Homecoming Attendants—Ron Sherman, Ray Sahm, Mozelle Laughlin, and Dianne Van Horn. The theme of the Prom was carried out with a rock garden in front of the stage, where the king and queen were crowned by Steve Smersh and Dianne Herzog. A large wishing well was the center of attraction in the middle of the dance floor. The room was decorated with red paper roses, gold, silver, and blue stars, and flowered paper adorned the walls.
