The Whispering Pine 1954-1955 ESTES PARK HIGH SCHOOL ESTES PARK. COLORADO DEDICATION aV s To Mrs. Doris Byrd who has served as an instructor in the Estes Park Grade School for the past 22 years, and for the lasting impression she has made on the hearts of those students she has taught, we affectionately dedicate this 1954-55 WHISPERING PINE. 2 SCHOOL BOARD Estes Park School Board members, Dr. H. W. Crowell, president; Helen McCracken, secretary; and Byron Graves, treasurer, donated much time and effort in order to insure an adequate high school education for each student. On the shoulders of these three was placedthe responsibility of selecting the faculty, overseeing financial transactions, and maintaining school policies. These matters they handled very capably and efficiently. 3 MR. BYRON GRAVES Treasurer ADMINISTRATION WALTER L. EDWARDS In his third year as superintendent, Mr. Edwards capably administered the policies of the school board. In addition to carrying out his administrative duties, he served as biology instructor. Principal Brice Evans, in his fourth year at Estes , worked diligently to produce harmony in school life. He also instructed courses in chemistry and mathematics. Mrs. Eacret served as secretary to both Mr. Evans and Mr. Edwards for the major portion of the school year. In March, she returned to her home in Ft. Collins. W. BRICE EVANS 4 Members of the EPHS faculty deserve a great deal of credit for their patient work and long hours spent in assuring the students of a thorough, well-rounded education. Each of these wonderful individuals played his own part in attempting to cram knowledge into some very invulnerable heads. They performed their jobs well, however, and turned out some very fine finished products. Our thanks to them for their hard work. NORMAN KUHLMAN Industrial arts, crafts, general science, assistant coach; eighth grade sponsor. FACULTY ETHEL BOLLING Business education; Quill and Scroll, Whispering Pine, and Mountaineer sponsor. JOHN STOWE Music; senior co-sponsor; Modern Music; Masters sponsor. 5 EUGENIA TUTTLE Social studies; senior co-sponsor. JOHN WESLEY Math, chemistry; junior co-spon-sor. Mr. Thompson was previouslyemployed as a deputy sheriff and has carried on other law enforcement duties. The Thompsons own a home in the Big Thompson canyon. Fine wholesome meals were prepared and served by our lunchroom cooks. Mrs. Howard and Mrs. McConnell. They also cooked special meals for football players on game days. 7 CONCENTRATION! PIANISSIMO, PLEASE! . - Mmm GOOD! GOING SOMEWHERE? YOU CAN’T HARDLY GET THEM NO MORE! HAVING FUN? 8 Classes SENIORS Arriving at the top of the high school educational ladder, the seniors of 1955 look back upon a happy four years, filled with activities and fun. As freshmen in 1951-52, these lads and lasses (forseeing a need for money in coming years) began to shrewdly manipulate their finances. In their freshman year, they won a high school assembly contest and traveled to LaPorte to present two one-act plays. As juniors, the class began a busy year by taking charge of Homecoming festivities. Later in the year, they presented a play Fog Island, and supervised the Junior-Senior Prom. In their senior year, the members of the classof 1955 were guided by officers Jack Glendenning, president; Tom McKinney, vice president; Gary Hossack, secretary; Irene Hyatt, treasurer; and Chuck Rund-quist, student council representative. These five, with the assistance of class sponsors Miss Tuttle and Mr. Stowe, carried on class business in their final year. This lively bunch of Freshmen had an exciting beginning to their high school days. About the first thing the girls did was to join the Pep Club. They suffered through the initiation and were very good sports. Their first dance was on December 3, called the Snowball dance. The decorations consisted of snowballs hanging from the ceiling, and a snowman on the wall. The next dance was on April 1. They also sold concessions at some of the football and basketball games and gave a competitive class assembly. BACK ROW: Joe O’Donnell. The EPHS Pep Club represents the domineering school spirit of the students. Wherever there is a Bobcat, there, too, will be the Pep Club cheering him on up his road to victory. The 1954-1955 Pep Club sets a good example. The members look trim in their purple corduroy skirts and white turtle-neck sweaters. The girls chosen as officers to represent this group were: President, Beverly Myers; vice-president, Dianne Duncan; secretary, Judy Crowell; and treasurer, Betsy Baker. 26 G. A. A The Girls' athletic association is an extracurricular organization with a capacity for promoting and sponsoring girls' sports. It is especially beneficial to girls who wish to continue participating in athletics after the.y are no longer required in school. Girls in good health in grades 9-1-2 are eligible to become members of GAA. They choose teams and compete among themselves in such sports as volley ball, basketball, soft ball, and soccer. For several years, representatives from the Estes Park GAA have annually attended a play day, sponsored by one of the state colleges. This even enables girls from all over the state to meet each other and to participate in sports together. Cathy Priegnitz, Loretta Droeser, Mildred Gorman, Robruta Bro-die, and Ann Thompson are president, vice-president, secretary, treasurer, and point recorder respectively, of the Estes Park Girls' athletic association.
