Basketball The basketball team started fast in the conference, but met a stumbling block in the form of an experienced Wellington team which subsequently won the championship with Estes finishing second. The squad showed great promise, but was never able to find the necessary spark to beat the Wellington team. Promise for future years was shown by the Juniors, Sophomores, and Freshmen on the team. 'fcctLall An inexperienced team of three Sophomores, four Juniors, and four Seniors opened the season under a new coach and with a new formation. The team had its ups and downs, but they came along to win the conference championship. In the final game of the year they were defeated by a powerful Eaton team in the state playoffs. The 1948 track season was the most successful in the history of the school. After losing the conference meet by a narrow margin, the Estes thinclads went on to win the district qualifying meet and the State meet. This was the first state championship won by this school in athletics.
