0 VUe - w m k ' A jP '• T Dedication We, the members of the annual staff dedicate this book to the people of Estes Park for their excellent support and co-operation in making this annual possible. - Lfc . ... _ w jsshSp fiealc) o| Education Few people completely understand how much work the Board of Education does. Neither do they realize how much time and effort Board members must give in discharging the duties of their offices. In brief, our Board is fully responsible for all school policies and finance. They meet often — at least once a month, sometimes almost each day when special business demands their attention—and keep close touch with school progress and problems. These three men have given their time willingly and freely in an effort to provide the best possible schools for Estes Park. They richly deserve our support for a thank less job well done. MR. TURNER Robert Turner, as principal of E. P. H. S., is constantly in contact with students and their problems. Mr. Turner has done nn excellent job as principal. He also has taken an active part in all school activities, and is sponsor of the student council. MR FRANZEN The position of superintendent of schools requires expert handling. Carl Franzen has not only proved that he is able to direct the entire school system, but that he also is a friend to all of the students and teachers. ETHEL M. Remote “Victory Comes Only to the Valiant” was the motto selected by the Senior Class. Twenty-six people are graduating, and out of this number, several have gone to school in Estes Park all twelve years. The ’49ers kept up the pace by sponsoring a Sadie Hawkins Dance and New Year’s Eve dance. They also sold Tee shirts, Bobcat scarves and pencils. The Amateur Hour and “Charlie’s Aunt” were further good signs of the Senior Class productions. The yellow rose was chosen for the class flower and green and silver for class colors. The class of ’49 has lived up to the traditional high standards set by preceeding classes and EPHS is proud of them. JUNE JARMAN GAA 4. Pep Club 4. Mountaineer 4. Whispering Pine 4. 'fcctLall An inexperienced team of three Sophomores, four Juniors, and four Seniors opened the season under a new coach and with a new formation. The team had its ups and downs, but they came along to win the conference championship. In the final game of the year they were defeated by a powerful Eaton team in the state playoffs. An intermural basketball tournament was held. Team captains were: Shirley Brunz, Carol Lawrence, Betty Brodie, Lucille Hyatt, and Polly Pepper. Ten girls attended the annual GAA Play Day at Fort Collins A M. All through the year the girls have hiked, bowled, played basketball, volleyball, baseball, and any number of other activities so they could acquire enough points to get a letter or an additional award. MRS. CAMERON Maria Cameron has been one of our busiest teachers this year. She has organized a Junior High Pep Club, and revived G A. A., which had been discontinued. In addition to her regular girls gym and health classes Mrs. Cameron sponsored the Senior High Pep Club and acted as girls counselor. She has handled all of these activities expertly. The group, consisting of five students and their sponsor, attended the meeting of the Colorado Speech Congress in Boulder. Each student has been required to memorize several long readings and orations. Jackie Rockwell has given a number of humorous readings in school assemblies and before civic organizations. JoAnne McGary has done considerable work on readings and orations. Mike Sweet has created and delivered a number of after dinner talks. Barry Myers has worked on orations and extempore speaking, and represented E. P H. S. in the American Legion Oratorical contest at the district meet at Greeley. Dick Smith has worked on standard orations and has done research on the state debate question. We feel, that in this first year of speech work in Estes Park High School, we have begun a program of which the school may be proud. Back Row (left to right): .Joyce Copeland, JoAnne McGary. They really put out a lot of effort to learn how a radio station really works. Their scripts were presented at high school assemblies and for the American Legion Auxiliary. The second half of the year was devoted to the reading of plays and dialogues. This group has grown this year and they plan for a better organization in future years. This year, the Mountaineer has been published and issued once a month. Oftentimes news has not been plentiful; however, the reporters have always found something to write up for your interest. The staff announces with pride that on February 10, of this year, this school was granted a charter in the Quill and Scroll International Honorary Society for High School Journalists. Initiation will have taken place sometime during April with approximately ten charter members. It is with much appreciation that we, the Mountaineer staff, acknowledge the splendid cooperation of students, faculty and the Estes Park merchants who have helped us in having a high school paper. Much of the credit for the success of our paper is due Mrs. Ethel M. Bolling, our sponsor. 'future flomemalzete Qmelica The Future Homemakers of America is a national organization. The Estes Park branch was organized by members of the home economics class early this year and officers were elected as follows: President, Jody Markley; Vice President, Kay Markley; Secretary-Treasurer, Beverly Par-ton. Mrs. Burton sponsored the group. Some of the girls took part in the program at the Northern District F. H. A. convention in Loveland, November 6. A Pigskin Jamboree was given for the football squad and refreshments were served at various times throughout the basketball season to the two teams after the games. Donna placed second in the Colorado cherry pie-baking contest held in Loveland. She was judged not only on her pic, but also on her charm, personality, and appearance.
