In the short lifetime of our friend and classmate, Bill Bruce, he went forward and found friendship with all, and laughed away the sorrows of the world. A smile was his, and the world was at his feet, for his was the glory that only a few find on earth. He made a world of song and dance for himself and all his friends, and it is there that he left it for his classmates to carry on and build a happier, more cheeful place for all. When an accidental shot snuffed out his life abruptly on November 19, 1947, he left behind a memory that will live on with us forever. STUDENT COUNCIL The up-and-coming schools of the nation have developed democratic school systems for meeting school problems. Estes Park has followed the trend in its student body government. This year the student body was headed by Chuck Reed, who has taken care of the job with the skill of a veteran. This year some amending and revising was done on the old constitution. The student council was started in April, 1927. The first constitution was drawn up in 1934 and has been revised several times since then. The organization is made up of a president of the student body, who is from the senior class; the secretary-treasurer, who is from the junior class; and the vice-president, who must be from the sophomore class. In addition there are two committees, athletic and social. THE WHISPERING PINE Above: Feature editor Betty Jo Blue, helped by JoAnne McGary checks feature copy, which does not in the least bother copy-editor Barry Myers. He concentrates on writing copy as fast as class editors Herb Jespersen and Chuck Reed can turn in their layouts. Looking over the last proofs of the annual pictures as a most important job are Milton Blue and photo editor Dick Sands. Money matters of great importances are talked over by business manager Charles Smith and sponsor Joyce Ramage, while associate editor Janice McConnell helps editor-in-chief Bill Anspauch plan a layout for the annual. Ignoring all such proceedings, sports editor Tiny Collins gets his copy typed. This is the managing staff that put the brains behind the annual coming out. EDITORIAL STAFF Fully intralled over their work on the Mountaineer are Dick Sands, who is reading copy as all Copy Editors must do; the feature editor, JoAnne McGary is getting some helpful assistance from Jackie Lou Rockwell, a fellow reporter; Virginia Underwood is busily typing up the sports for Sports Editor Bill Snare; Shirley Brunz, Betty Jo Blue, and Bill Anspauch look over the final copy of the latest paper and try to find their news articles. These are the busy fingers of the Editorial Staff of the Mountaineer. MANAGING STAFF Off in one comer of the Managing Editors Table we find Business Manager Beverly Parton, looking over the books with Charles Smith and Bob McDowell, the Advertising Managers. Who far off in the other comer is making so much noise? Oh! we see it is just Assistant Editor Barry Myers typing out his Editorials while Managing Editor Joyce Ramage and Editor In Chief LeRoy Machin look on. And now we see the power behind the scenes. These are the people that keep the paper coming and keep the reporters and the rest of the editors going and get the paper out to the group on time, a great job for now we see the finished product and we also see the people that put out the papers every two weeks. Look over this group and you shall see the leaders of tomorrow's press. THE MOUNTAINEER The Future Homemakers Club of America members are: Joyce Marcroft; Mona Morgan, Song Leader; Jean Bennett, Vice President; Pat Pratt, President; Doris Kenney, Treasurer; Barbara Baum, Parliamentarian; Standing are Miss Alice Tigges, Club Sponsor; Opal Marshall, and Carolyn Phelps. Secretary Collen Raper, Reporter Carol Lawerence, and Historian Zethal Naylor were absent at the time of this picture. LeRoy Machin, JoAnne McGary, Phyllis Montgomery, and Betty Brodie are presenting a pantomine tor the Dramatics Club. Standing: Dick Sands, Barry Myers, John Kessler, and Bill Grove. Seated in front of the sofa is Miss Joyce Ramage, the Club sponsor. Seated on the sofa from left to right are; Elva Kassahn, Imogene Johnson, Marlene McKinney, Jackie Lou Rockwell, and Polly Pepper. Bilyeu, Baird, W. Thorpe, Holt, Havens, King, Fonda, Grove, Becker, Gene Benedict, Howard, West, Wiemers, Sutton, Kessler, Nettleton, D. Tighe. CHORUS A greatly-appreciated increase in the enrollment of the high school chorus has proved a nerve-racking test for Mr. Robert Lloyd, maestro of the music department. Last year the enrollment was approximately sixty, this year it is about ninety. During the year the Mixed Chorus has presented a Christmas cantata, a concert for the Estes Park Music Week program, and a Sunday afternoon concert with the outstanding baritone, Dr. Carl Melander, as guest soloist. Highlights of the group were an operetta and a minstrel show presented by the Boys' Glee Club, which is part of the mixed chorus. The Boys' Glee Club gave several performances before different groups throughout the year. Both the Mixed Chorus and the Glee Club went to the music contest at Greeley. Row 1: Reed, McKinney, Bennett, Morgan, D. Tighe, H. Montgomery, Pepper. Row 2: Everly, Agee, Harbert, L. Goff, Northcut, J. Thorpe, Mall, D. Humrich, Kindred, G. Brunz, King, E. McConnell. Row 3: Nesbitt, Van Pelt, A. Thompson, Jackson, P. Smith, Goertz, Baum, Wilson, Pritchard, R. Poling, M. Kinney, Hogan, P. Swearingen, R. McConnell. Row 4: Mr. Lloyd, Cole, Myers, C. Smith, O. Thompson, Jelsma, Strosnider. BAND The Estes Park High School Band, which started the year with just a handful of people, has developed throughout the year into a forty-five piece group. The band played at all the football and basketball games at home and traveled to the final conference game at La Porte. In addition to pep activities, they took part in other programs, and went to the music contest at Greeley. If the interest taken by the members this year is an indication of continued enthusiasm, it will not be long until Estes Park has built up an A-l band. The Junior Play, Ever Since Eve, was presented February 6. Those pictured here are Mrs. Rose O'Brien, director; Janice McConnell, Mrs. Clover; Roger Collins, football player; Wilferd Wiemers, Mr. Clover; John Crow, football player; Dick Smith, Johnny Clover; Lucinda Swearingen, Betsy Erwin; Miss Grace Rose, sponsor; Barry Myers, Spud Erwin. Seated are Don Bowen as Cappy Simmons; Polly Pepper, Lucybelle Lee; Jackie Lou Rockwell, Susan Blake; Harland Goertz, Principal Henry Quinn, Eddie Kassahn, Preston Hughes. Not pictured is Donna Lee Tighe who played Miss Martha Willard, the high school journalism teacher. The play was enthusiastically received, and is generally felt to have been one of the best productions ever presented here. In the Conference Track Meet, Estes was first with 74V4 points, Timnath was second with 63 Vi points, and LaPorte was third with 27 Vi points. In the Northern District Meet, Estes again came through with a first place. They racked up 47Vi points. Johnstown was second with 37Vi, Timnath was third with 32 points. In the Northern Colorado Track Meet, at Colorado A M, Estes placed 7th in both A and B class competition which was considered very good. In the State Meet held at Colorado University, Estes placed fifth with Duane Sherman, Herb Jespersen and Bob Scott taking top honors. In this one it was in the form of a boy, DICK SANDS. The Pep Club sponsored three dances, one initiation, and one assembly during the year. They also gave several letter drills at the football games and one during the half of the Waverly basketball game. The sponsor was Miss Glenn.
