Many srudenrs hod ro eirher stay ofrer school or arrive ro rhe class or seven o ' clock in rhe morning, bur mosr feir rhor rhe sacrifice was worrh ir. This program helped me under- stand myself and keep my sonriry , explained Andy Felix, a dedicored Peer Counselor. Overcoming Difficulties And Succeeding In Achieving Their Goals Did you know rhor Alberr Einsrein and Winsron Churchill hod difficulties passing basic dosses in school In rheir days, no speciol programs exist- ed for students with learning difficul- ties. However today, schools ore re- quired by law to offer dosses for students with identified learning dis- abilities- Special educotion here consisted of two Pvesource Specialist Progrom (r SP) classes and two Special Day Glosses (SDC) taught by Gerry Lu- mion, Toni Acone, Gale Kirk and Roy Hurt P SP and SDC emphasized basic skills, survivol skills, ond ' vocotionol training. We are proud of the way our students were able to achieve rheir expected gools, said Mrs. Lu- mion Closses were smoll to encourage individualized instruction and give students extra help with their regulor classes Yolando Cervantes liked her speciol dosses ' They helped me a lot in my studies. Without the help I probably would have flunked most classes, They olso helped students pre- pare for proficiency tests. Patricio Perolfo researches her science in Mi- gronr Ed 1 ■ Studying in a New Language ESL is Q shelrered English doss for language minoriry srudenrs, said Mr. Jonu Juarez . Here in this ar- mosphere rhey can learn rhe basic literacy skills. This year ' s ESL doss hod o variety of different notionolities. For example, students from Polond, Lebanon, Mexico, El Salvador and olso Vietnom were in the doss. Ja- vier Gomez soid, When I first got involved in ESL, I didn ' t think much of it, but now I con really see the good it did for me , Angelica Lopez soid, ESL was helpful to me mainly in developing my reading skills and communicoting with others ' Estoncio also had o program to help those students whose fomilies were agriculturally employed. This program was Migrant Ed. headed by Ms. Isobelle Venson The sru dents were involved in after school study sessions to help meet their educational needs. Students could get individuol help not only with their school work but also academic ad- visement or they could just work on social skills if needed. Carol Aguiar soid, I love it. It helped me with my schoolwork and also helped me prepare for col- lege. In rhe library, Mario Dioz practices hard ro excel in her school work During Migrant Ed , Leticlo Santo-Cruz vi- gorously studies for her classes ESL students Roberto Contreros, Morio Al- vorez, and Coesor Asoro listen ro Mr. Noe Guevara ' s foscinoting speech on geogro- phy Peer Counseling, Migronr Ed.
