Encouraged to do their best and not to be put off by tough Empire League competition, members of the Girl's Varsity Soft- ball team prepared for a challeng- ing season. The Aztecs had to face several championship teams in a league reputed to be one of the toughest in AA softball. Aztec softball coach Cec Ponce felt that perennial C.l.F. finalists or semi-finalists Kennedy or Cypress would be the most difficult chal- lenges of the season, along with El Dorado. At press time, the season was just underway. Not to be intimidat- ed by the difficulties of their league, however, the team set a goal: to finish league with a .500 win f loss record. To help reach this goal, Coach Ponce was counting on the entire team, including top performances by Beth Kinney, Jes- sica Lemon, Kelly Oakly, and Leasa Bosley. This year's J.V. softball team was also hoping for a rewarding season. Coach Jean Agee had a goal for the team: to be among the top three teams in the Empire League. Early in the season the team went to the Brea Olinda Tournament. Defeating four teams, they easily took first place. Key players Kim Cox, Sheila Cook, Teri Magana, Kelli Dillon, and Ja- mye English helped lead the Az- tecs to victory. girI's softball - 'l2'l
