Student Life School year begins with honors 'Jvufx A7 fp fi . If . , ANNE The empty halls of Escambiawere once again filled with both the laughter and the moans of students. August was the month for honoring past and present Escambia athletes. Emmitt Smith, senior, appeared on the front of the News Journal sports page. He was ranked second best running back in the nation. HI don't concentrate on what l'm ranked,', commented Emmitt. MAll I'm thinking about is playing and winning the fourteenth game of the season fState Championshipjf' Alumni, Greg NeSmith, 1986 gradu- ate, was also on the sports page for winning the Babe Ruth Tournament. A Campaign was started this month called Yes to football, No to drugs. All football players now wear a shirt with that popular slo- gan. Mr. Larry Huntly, curriculum co- ordinator, felt the opening of school went well considering the number of schedule changes needed this year. The lunch schedule was rearranged so that students no longer have split classes. We came back aweek early to get back in the routine, commented Gene Autry, economics teacher. Teachers, along with the band and football players returned early to school to prepare for the year ahead. Dian Fossey, also known as the Woman Who Lives Alone in the Forest, was found dead Dec. 27, 1985, in her small cabin in Rwanda. Fossey had lived in Rwanda for 18 years while she studied the gorilla. The Rwanda government issued awar- rent and arrested Wayne McGuire, Fos- sey's last research assistant, for her murder . . . Time magazine dedicated eight pages in their September lst is- sue to Ralph Loren and his successful line of sports clothes . . . Father Martin J enco was released after being held hostage in Lebanon for 564 days. Fa- ther Martin was greeted with tears of joy from his relatives and is now back home in Joliet . . . this page: 1.
