We learn that lust before 1900 the name Williams Station had been changed to Atmore in honor of C. P. Atmore, general passenger agent for the L. and N. Railroad. The population of the town was three hundred, there were three stores and two churches here. Atmore, in l950, is a thriving city with a population of seven thousand. lt is proud of its good schools and churches, attractive homes, civic organ- izations, and its variety of business interests. The citizens of our city are always eager to promote any activity that adds to our happiness or in- creases our opportunities for advancement, they arevever mindful of their youth. Because we know we are very fortunate to live in or near Atmore, we say, To you, City of Atmore, in deep appreciation for your decency, your friendliness, and your never failing interest in us, we dedicate to you, this volume of the AtmoraIa. Music lll 'l'lll1Y llll 'llllll CLASS llll 19511 The history of our wonderful class began in 1938 when we entered the first grade. We were placed under the guidance of Mrs. Peavy and Mrs. Ellis. Many of us cried to go home, but soon we discovered that we could have fun at school, so we became sweet, industrious little children. The year we enioyed most in grammar school was 1944 when we were in the sixth grade. Dur- ing this year, we had many class parties and won almost all the half-holidays, we also enioyed the one-hour lunch periods. At the end of the year, Mr. Moore presented us with our first diplomas. September, 1944, was a great time for us because it was then that we entered high school. We soon established a good reputation for ourselves, and the upperclassmen finally quit teasing us and calling us small fries. 'We won recognition this year by contributing an average of five dollars to the Red Cross. Outstanding in the eighth grade was our first-aid class with Mr. Ellis. After a very hard struggle with Junior Ill math, we were promoted from the ninth to the tenth grade. The tenth grade brought algebra and its many mysterious problems. 1948 found us as the jolly Juniors of E. C. H. S. McCullough and Huxford students ioined us this year and almost doubled the size of our class. Four new classrooms, a cafeteria, and a library were added to our school' building. A band was organized this year under the direction of Mr. Fletcher and several of our class were members of it. The Junior-Senior banquet was the highlight of the year. Our sponsors were Mrs. Whitten and Mr. Hunter. We finally forced the Class of '49 to graduate so that we could become Seniors and be the first to leave assembly. A Glee Club and a Beta Club were organized this year, and we were proud that our class was well represented in these organizations. Being a Senior has brought us many new duties, responsibilities, and fun. We have enioyed selling magazines and candy to raise money for our annual, and the many other things that we have done this year. We owe the success of this year to our two wonderful sponsors - Miss Hodnette and Mr. Penny. Through twelve years of school, we have lost two of our class members by death. Steve Kilpatrick, one of our new students from Robinsonville, was accidentally killed when we were in the seventh grade. The following year, we lost one of our original classmates, Bill Chapman. We shall always cherish their memory, for we know that our lives have been made happier and richer because of our associa- tion with them. Of sixty-three Seniors only twelve of the original class remain: Catherine Pipkin, Robbin White, Max White, Jane Keller, Bobby McDonald, Earnestine Jaye, Ralph Gibbs, Wynelle Gentry, O'Neil Baker, Billy Arnold, Curtis Tennant, and Lloyd Furney. To be eligible for membership, a student must have an average of 85, or above, he must have the qualifications of good character, honesty, and dependability.
