Cubs Show Unexpected Victories 1980's Freshman Basketball Team turned out to have had a great many more victories than expected. According to Coach Rusty Fachner, the team was a surprise to everyone. The coach stated, I didn't really expect this year's team to be a winning team. Every player was a winner; they all really hustled on the courts. John Edwards was the team's leading scorer and David Foster the leading rebounder. The steadiest players were Ray Stice and Dan Hawkins, while Tim Beck and Richard Sage showed the greatest improvement. i 1. SCORE 24 Patterson 34 39 Riverbank 54 42 Hughson 48 30 Livingston 44 36 Central 53 42 Patterson 69 39 Riverbank 48 39 Hughson 46 JV Shows Determination The Junior Varsity showed great determination in its constant efforts to improve. The outstanding player and highest scorer was center Randy Rose, who scored an average of 9.8 points per game. Coach Mike Backovich was also impressed with forward Rob Rigg and guard Frank Torres, who played consistently throughout the season. The team's lack of experience led to difficulties when faced with tough opposition from the Central Catholic and Patterson teams. Coach Backovich, however, was pleased with the team's attempts and believed they could do well next year as a Varsity. This team hustled more, tried harder, and had more determination to improve than any other team I have ever coached. 4. Frank Torres keeps his eye on the ball. 5. Mark George shoots for two.
