Maj. Sam Sox The 1987 AQUILA STAFF conveys the honor of faculty dedication to one that exemplifies all that it is to be an Eagle. After graduating from the University of Alabama, he answered his countries call to arms. In defense of the rights most of us now get to take for granted, he displayed heroism and valor above and beyond the call of duty. In recognition of the sacrifices he made. America awarded him The National Defense Service Medal. The Vietnam Service Medal twice and the Air Medal six times. In addition to these, for his actions on July 23.1968. he was awarded The Distinguished Flying Cross twice and the Purple Heart. Most of us. however, see him in a far different setting. As a teacher of mathematics he has the rare ability to convey difficult concepts and at the same time make them enjoyable. Outside the classroom he has given much to the students of Erwin such as his sponsorship in years past of the Key Club. While you'll never see him on the silverscreen and he is certainly no Tom Cruise, he will always be Top Gun to us! This book is proudly dedicated to a real Eagle. Major Sam Sox. 5
