Valedictorian comes from the latin word Valedicere which means to bid farewell. The Valedictorian is usually the highest ranking student in the class, who is in charge of making the farewell address at graduation ceremonies. Salutatorian comes from the latin word Salutatorius which means greeting or good wish. The Salutatorian is usually the second highest ranking student in the class, who is in charge of delivering the welcome at graduation exercises.
