Mrs. Armstrong's Home and Family classes will never be forgotten by her students. She is responsible for much of the happiness of many young couples. Coach Armstrong's greatest reward as a football coach comes in helping to mold boys into strong responsible men. Contributions that the Armstrongs have made to Erwin are immeasurable and we hope this dedication will be received as a small gift of our appreciation from the students ol Emin High School. ■ 13 I AM A STUDENT 9 mm Jp Mrs. Armstrong directed the very successful senior play, Cat O'Nine Tails. Quarterback, Rod McSweeny, was voted outstanding offensive player by the team. Senior, Lynn Hayes, was voted outstanding defensive player for three interceptions and one fumble returned for a touchdown. This game ended the 1973 spring training and kicked off the 1973 football season. Student Lite 17 Four sessions are too lew for some who lind it necessary to Ret information second hand. Seniors Enthusiastic For College Day Twenty-one Alabama colleges sent representatives to the annual College Day. Senior attendance was excellent and contributed to a very successful day. Guidance office assistants acted as teacher and student hosts. This experience helped many students to make their final choice of a college. As a show of appreciation to Seniors for their outstanding participation during College Day, Mr. Hughes gave them the rest of the day off. _ S CB EHiorS l CollEGJ Refreshments are ready for representatives. Student life 19 Fifties Pep Rally Brings Walls Down To promote spirit for the last football game of the season the Seniors organized a Fifties Day. Girls were seen in long skirts, bobby socks, and sweaters. Boys wore rolled-up bluejeans and white socks. The favored hair styles seemed to be pony tails for girls and the wet look for boys. The climax of the day was the Fifties Pep Rally . As the students filled the gym the band played such old favorites as Rock Around the Clock. The cheerleaders led the crowd in cheers honoring the football team while the students prepared skits. In the first skit Shana Burns, Judy Fortenberry, Pam Chandler, and Sherry Smith pantomined the Leader of the Pack. Sherry Smith's dying scene at the end of their skit brought both laughs and applause. A band consisting of limmy Williams, Earl Waller, and Johnny Williams played rock and roll music while a group of Seniors did the Bunny Hop. Then they broke out into a fast song and these Seniors demonstrated some of the favorite dances of the fifties. The walls of the gym shook as people danced and cheered. Cracks actually formed along the Freshmen and Juniors' side of the gym. Some of the students termed this pep rally as the best we've ever had. It certainly achieved its purpose. the leader ot the Pack skit. 20 Student life Zoiind.1 Zbinden, Vince Shannon, Kathy Trcadaway, Johnny Coker, and tori Guest demonstrate dances. At the beginning of summer while others swam and played around, a group of Erwin footballers settled down to practice sessions. One drill a day in the morning usually stifled most other activities but Erwin was determined to be a winner. Twice-a-day sessions began before camp at Nau-voo. Here a feeling of togetherness united the team. Some of the comments from players concerning practice were; “Practice hard to have a good team and create mental toughness. “Practice builds a person's pride and sta-mina-prepares him for the coming game physically and mentally. “It is rough! Work hard every day and on Friday it all pays off. Most of us did not like Nauvoo though we knew it was necessary. Stretching their muscle , Erwin players are shown readying for practice. Football 61 Leadership—Key To Winning College? and professional football players are of a better breed than ever. Most people agree this is due to better all around high school coaching. Erwin's coaching staff is no exception with John Armstrong serving as head coach handling the offensive backfield. Others on the staff are )im Jeffrey, offensive line; Tommy Combs, defensive backfield; Richard Wood, defensive line. They meet all through the day reviewing film, preparing for opponents and just plain talking football. Erwin's team did a great job this year. Much of the credit can be given to the coaching staff. 62 Football Football 63 Hopes fly high at the beginning of the season for a new Erwin team under its second year of coaching by john Armstrong. Most of the players know his system and perform well to it. Losing two powerful backs from the offense. Coach found Steve Barber, who previously played defense, Steve Mclaurin, a returning back, and Mike Clements. Sammy Russo earned a job in the backfield. Rod McSweeney and Carl Huffstutler shared quarterbacking assignments throughout the season. lynn Henderson and the big eagle, Mike Guthrie, bring on the spirit in an effort to uproot the Vikings. Over on the sidelines hopes are flying high as the eagles plan the big upset of 73. Eagle secondary wakes up in an attempt to stall a lone Viking downfield. ( 4 Football iagles' Offense Soars High Football 65 Eagle Defense Drops Curtain On Opponents The Erwin defense was lough against the runs and very stingy when opponents tried to pass. Picking up a total of eleven interceptions, six by Lynn Hayes, opponents found it almost impossible to pass on Erwin. The defense held opponents' rushes to eighty-five yards or less in seven games. They caused three or more fumbles in four games. On each occasion the offense was able to score. Coach Armstrong said the reason that this team was so great was their togetherness. Erwin was noted by other coaches as being aggressive, tough, and last. The fact that this was Erwin's best season ever is illustrated in the fact that Erwin placed four players on the All-County Team. Lynn Hayes, Freddy Biddy, Stanley Sims and Steve Barber made first string All-County for the Birmingham News. Frank Brown moved out the starters and took over first position at 119. Stan McClain has been wrestling at Erwin from as far back as most can remember, and is one of the best to ever wrestle at Erwin. Eddie Kennemur was in his fourth year as a wrestler and took over the Chattanooga Championship at 132. Sam Pearson was scaring away all competition at 138. David Mew-bourne, wrestling at 145, had his best year. Steve Barber, Chattanooga Champ, continued living up to his honor as possibly Erwin's best w restler. Stanley Sims kept his reputation as a winner and was rarely beaten during his reign at Erwin. Mark Snider was wrestling at 175 and was a threat to all his opponents. Randy Helms was possibly the most improved wrestler, winning at 185. Greg Key will be around for two more years at 192. Mike lanthorn was as small as heavyweights go, but was quicker than most. Off Hours Of Practice Pay Developing skill, improving accuracy, and strengthening endurance resulted from basketball practice sessions. The basketball hoopers practiced after school in preparation for coming games. The first and second teams scrimmaged against each other simulating an actual game. The experience gained from these scrimmages proved invaluable in real games. Each week's practice varied from others, depending upon the teams to be played. Many different defenses were installed to deal with the opposition. Before any of the players could leave practice, fifty free throw shots had to be hit. His predictions came true. Jimmy Overstreet and Dave Wilson were responsible for most of the rebounds pulled down. They also scored the points from inside. Jimmy Armstrong, Tommy Holmes, and Donnie West were the bombers from the outside. Dink Tucker, Overstreet, Armstrong, Holmes, Wilson, and West will all be missed from the line-up next year.
