THE PIONEER 1974 Ervinton High School Nora, Virginia Volume 23 i We, the Pioneer Staff, cordially invite you, the Class of 1974, to journey with us into days gone by. Days of hopes, dreams, tears, ambitions, headaches, and even failures. We request the honor of your presence on this sightseeing journey through the next 128 pages, for it is, One Final Time.’’ Table Of Contents Administration Faculty Seniors Juniors Sophomores Freshmen Junior High Organizations Athletics Activities Advertisers ADMINISTRATION Tenderly now let all men turn to the earth Nancy Newhall Administration Mr. Kenneth Smith Mr. Farrell Sutherland The five years of study, work and anxiety are drawing to a close . At last the long dream of fulfillment is about to become a reality. We are approaching the end of those years of guided work and must soon face the unknown. This, we have to do alone. Those beautiful dreams are now within our grasp , but we must follow the right path with care, with diligence, and with faith. Some day, somewhere, we will realize our goal. May those happy years here at Ervinton High School never be forgotten. May they be the years from which we may look back upon and draw strength when we are faint , and the guiding light for us when the road ahead is dim . To our Administration, we are deeply indebted for their patience , friendship and kindly understanding in giving us a chance to display our weaknesses and outward strength , and to get us headed in the right direction to achieve our goals . We salute you Mr. Kenneth Smith and Mr. Farrell Sutherland for the fine job you have done here at Ervinton ! 5 Guidance Mr. Jess Lockhart Mrs. Billie Crum As the year comes to a close , we as seniors must all look back and bid most of our high school acquaintances farewell. Our years as high school students are quickly coming to a halt , and our years as young adults must soon begin . During our time at Ervinton High School , each of us have prepared ourselves to go forth into our chosen field of work or on for additional training and education in some higher institution of learning . These preparations would not have been possible without the help of our guidance department. We feel very fortunate to have such a patient and understanding guidance department here at Ervinton . As seniors we must look to our guidance department especially now for help and patience . Now is a time of planning, hoping, praying, and most of all seeking . We are all seeking a goal in life and that goal must be planned now. With the help of Mr. Jess Lockhart and Mrs. Billie Crum we are all able to seek advice and counseling from someone with great understanding and knowledge . Mr. Lockhart and Mrs. Crum we give you our thanks . 6 FACULTY . . . that gray color . . . Ervinton faced tough competition in the Lonesome Pine District, one of Southwest Virginia ' s roughest dis- tricts. It enrolls about 86 regular students from Ervinton High School: 63 of these students participate in regular vocation classes; 6 in special education: and 17 in pre-vocational classes. Top - Joey Smith and Jerry Sweeney learn to work in a body shop. Left - Archie Kiser, Jeff Yates, Glen Hearl, VenRasnick, James White, and Dennie Johnson pre- pare for a future in masonry . 81 The pre-vocational school offers an opportunity to get practical experiences by doing. Oxy-acetylene welding, arc welding, and practical projects in car- pentry are only some of the courses offered at the school. The classroom includes practical experience with learning as more and more pre-vocational stu- dents advance to regular vocational classes. This kind of classes allows pre-vocational people to ready for a job after graduation. We are very proud to have such a school in our county to educate people who wish to go into a trade soon after graduation. We wish to take this space to pay special tribute to the staff of the Dickenson County Vocational School. 82 To those who desire a more academic education, the high school offers two courses of a less practical vocational nature, these are; Home Economics taught by Miss Kellam; and Agriculture taught by Mr. Rose. 83 Mr. Euel Gibbons” Mullins looks over his My world and welcome to it. breakfast.
