Secretarial Studies 'I Miss Winifred McMahon Chairman Daily, the clatter of hundreds of typewriters heralded the approach of Erasmus-bred secretaries toward the business world. Those of us under the jurisdiction of the Secretarial Studies Department found that efficiency and reliability in business routine were stressed. In the stenography classes, we learned to decipher the baffling series of squiggles and lines known as short- hand. Rapid-fire dictation was no longer impossible to record on paper. Comprehensive courses in secretarial practice combined shorthand with our newly developed skill in typing. Those of us who were especially fast and accurate found a challenge in the special clerical practice class. In addition, accelerated courses in typing and stenograpliy were available for students who were pursuing an academic course of study. Future operators of switchboards, adding machines. and the like were also provided for. They received thorough training in the manipulation of the various business machines and found, as had the secretaries, that Erasmus had prepared them well for the business world. Strange small lines and stranger smaller circles are the bases of this lesson as Mrs. Muriel Hendricks teaches her class the fundamentals of stenography. A secretarial practice class takes speed dictation as a matter of course. ,9 ,.2,0 were 9 .2 er

Industrial Arts A primitive Caveman fashioned an ax of rock 1 il tl 3 l i 11 c ius megan the pursuit of industrial arts. Klan llllS come a long way since that rock, with complex tools and machines Hlling the earth. lt was the hope of our Industrial Arts Department that we would develop a knowledge of some of these tools and make better use of them. Under the guidance of its staff, a new citv-wide drafting course was cstah- lished. The new area of studs' was added to an alreadv well-rounded c11r- riculum consisting of shops in wood, metal, and electricitx' as well as niech 1 ani- cal drawing. Those of IIS who majored in industrial arts gained a familiarity with numerous industrial processes and with the equipment of modern industry. To our dismay, no course was offered i11 the operation of pencil sharpeners and can openers. Despite this shameful omission. the department flourished and achieved, with flying colors. its goal of demonstrating the occupational and avocational possibilities of tools and machines.
