Mathematics Throughout our four year stay, one phase in the pattern of Erasmian routine remained constant-students always took notice of figures and shapes. Under the direction of its teachers, the Mathematics Department offered students excellent opportunities to study hoth. Elementary algebra introduced novices to the fundamental principles in- volved in the lives and labors of A, B, and C, and provided students with practical skill in hasic algebraic operations. The design of two dimensional figures and use of logic in solving proofs were stressed in geometry classes, where the congruence and similarity of triangles and the properties of circles were some of the major fields. Intermediate algebra delved into such topics as literal equations and verhal prohlems. XVe grew more intimate with those diligent souls, A, B, and C, and those who found their antics particularly hafiiing may have found solace in reading Stephen Leacock's imaginative essay, The Human Element in Xlathematicsf'
