Program for Afloat College Education Mr. John Swenson The Program for Afloat College Education is a cooperative effort between participating colleges and universities and the Chief of Naval Training, offering undergraduate courses to qualified Navy nnen at sea. Originally conceived as an off-duty voluntary education program for the crews of the Polaris Fleet, PACE has now been expanded to include surface ships and remote operating bases which heretofore have been unable to participate in conventional college courses. This program offers unprecedented opportunities for earning college degrees - either Associate of Arts or Bachelor of Arts - to seagoing personnel, whether their ships are in homeports, at sea, or in overseas ports. The PACE courses are conducted by qualified instructors provided by Chapman College, all of whom hold a masters or doctorate degree in their area of specialization. Applicants receive pre-registration counseling, classroom instruction, and any necessary out-of-class assistance required for the -successful completion of the course. During the cruise over three-hupdred crew members took advantage of the program which covered over twenty various courses. The only thing that stands between a man and further education is himself .
