On the bridge, ENTERPRISE's underway watch teams run the entire show. For the Of- ficer of the Deck, the responsibility is awesome, for the ship is in his hands, along with the safety of the entire crew. There is little room for error, and everyone on the team, from the OOD to the lookouts, performs'his specific task conscientiously and with a high degree of professionalism. ' The bridge is a scene of precision underway. Through immediate communication with all major operational areas of the ship, the OOD and his watch team are constantly kept aware of any factors which may affect the ship's opera- tions. The bridge is also the home of ENTER- PRISE's Navigation Department. Using methods ranging from dead reckoning to electronic navigation, the Quartermasters of Navigation can plot the ship's position with an accuracy to within a few feet. The quarter- master's art is a contrast between the ancient and the new. The time-tested method of celestial navigation remains as important to the job of keeping the ship on a given course as the not long ago unheard of use of electronic data received from orbiting satellites and the ship's inertial navigation system.
