Music Department Anyone who has an ear for music and enjoys singing can join our choral department. Of course, it is not all fun and games. Both choirs and the vocal classes work hard all year round, but especially at Christmas time. This year the variety of music for the Christmas concert ranged from "Sleigh Bells" to Handel's "Hallelujah Chorus. " In February, the choir goes to dis- BOBBY MCCUU-'AR trict competition at Shades Valley High School. If good enough, they will then go to the University of Alabama for state competition. The choir has two new additions to it this year. First, our new director, Mr. Bobby McCu1lar, who has been a fine director as well as a great friend to all his studentsg and second, the new white blazers with navy blue skirts and scarves for the girls. The four divisions of the choral classes are the Girl's Glee Club and the Boy's Vocal Class, which are open to first semester studentsg the Choir, composed of upper semester vocal studentsg and the ensemble, which is open to the better voices of upper semester vocal persons. Take It With The fall play for 1966 was "YOU CAN'T TAKE IT WITH YOU" a comed in three act b 1 Y S Y Moss Hart and George Kaufman. It was presented by Thespian Troope 258 of Ensley High School. The production was presented by Miss Florence Pass sponsor, with Ch rl t T k , a ot e uc er as student director and Jimmy Gordy as president of the staff and stage manager. Major acting roles in "YOU CAN'T TAKE IT WITH YOU" included Tommy Ellis as the unforgettable Grandpa and Judy Stuart and Hershchel Hamner as the two confused young lovers. Other leading characters were portrayed by Nancy Englebert, Cynthia Watson and Iolm Haley ll -- a members of the gay household of the Sycamore family And then who can forget Pats - Y Aloia as the drunk Gay Wellington or Michael Spanos in his toga posing as the discus thrower or Pam Meagher's terrible dancing. . . The characters involved were wide and varied and yet all were unique and all were individuals. Late in the first period, Cross got things started for Ensley again with a 22 yard carry to the W. E. 30 and as the first quarter ended, Donaldson carried in from the 9 and Dickerson's kick made it 13-0. Wihth 21 seconds remaining in the half, the score was 19-6. Ensley scored two more in the third on a 22 yard run by Cross and an 8 yard carry by Bobby Shill. Stroup kicked both extra points, Satterwhite, George, Crapet, and Proffitt were the sharpest defenders for the Jackets. 202 Ens ley ..... 33 West End... Dicker- son's first completion put the Jackets at the Colonel 15 to set up their first TD. Early in the second quarter the Jackets lit the scoreboard again. Kim- brell skirted right in 18 yards to the Ensley 42. On third down, Dickerson floated a 39 yard bomb which Kimbrell simply ran under for the touchdown. Ensley led 12-0. The Jackets defense, led by Robert Satterwhite and Vic Bragan, bottled up the Colonels in the first half and the offensive line led by Don Stroup and Corky George aided the Jackets to their victory. Colone1's Henderson on a keeper went the final three yards for a TD. Wright's conversion was low and the Jackets led 12-6. The Colonels tried two running plays and a pass incompletion then punted and Ensley ran out the clock. YARDSTICK E. W. Woodlawn Ensley. .. Bessemer. . . In the opening quarter, the fine punting of Bessemer's Smithson kept the Jackets pinned in their own ter- ritory. But the tide changed on the last play of the opening quarter when Erwin boomed a 61-yard punt to the tiger 17 and Bessemer found itself deep in its own territory. After the Purples were unable to move, Smithson punted out to his 47 and Ensley had its best position of the night. Cross and Kimbrell hammered out two first downs to the Bessemer 31, Dickerson then arched a 33-yard aerial to Kim- brell all alone in the end zone. He dropped the ball, Bessemer took over at its own 36 to halt the drive. The half ended O-0. Ensley took the third quarter kick off and Proffitt opened up his bag of handoffs. Straight up-the- middle power running by Cross and Kimbrell moved the Jackets to a first down at the Bessemer 15. On fourth down, Proffitt fired to Don- aldson in the end zone with 6 points However, an illegal procedure pen- alty against Ensley nullified the play. But Proffitt shook off the rever- sal, and again spotted Kimbrell in the end zone and fired. Kimbrell caught it and led the Jackets to victory over Bessemer. YARDSTICK E. B.
