In Memory
WHEN FRIENDS DECEASE
A
Gabriel Santos
Ronnie Jones
I’ve watched great sailing ships . With sails full blown and white ; Reach some horizon’s edge And then drop out of sight.
But when those white-winged ships" Vth Dropped down behind the hill,
I knew without a doubt That they were sailing still.
So I’ve watched friends depart And like great ships at sea HU They’ve disappeared from sight And sailed away from me.
]:=: Someday I’ll get them back!
Meantime along life’s shore ■p My heart assured tells me IE They sail on evermore.
oS? We, the staff, proudly p=- dedicate this 1980 Cicer-=f' one to Dick Stringfellow - for the many years he has spent coaching and teaching the students of Ennis High School. Also, - we would like to dedicate S . it to the 1979-80 Ennis Independent School Dis-trict Board of Education for their work which has |rin made Ennis High a better jj " school. The many hours p8 -' they have sacrificed will 'nz not be forgotten.
Dedication

Vera Wenswitch Robert ErismonEditor’s Note
On behalf of the 1979-80 Cicerone Staff, we hope we have captured the memories of the past school year. As our years at Ennis High come to a close, some are happy to leave and some are not, but we all agree, it is something we will remember. “It’s Time for Movin’ On” for the Seniors of 1980, but we hope through this book, the memories will linger.

The Lions’ Sophomore running back Steve Barnes scored from 27 yards out in the first quarter. The defense held the Hornets offense on a fourth one on the Lions 14 yard line to insure their first victory in their first game under new Head Coach Dick Stringfellow, and Defensive Coordinator Jon Milstead. Barnes had 130 yards on 25 carries to lead the offense behind very good blocking. Kenneth Lipsey, Todd Parks, Scott Rider and Tommy Brown lead the outstanding defense, holding the Hornets scoreless throughout the entire game. Charles Edwards and Richard Taylor each had an interception to aide in the cause.

JACKSONVILLE-6
The Ennis Lions failed to cash in on three scoring opportunities and lost to the Indians 6-0. The Indians scored after recovering a fumble at the Lions’ 33 yard line, and from there, three plays later, scored on a pass which was to be the only touchdown of the game. The Lions moved the ball well, between the 10 yard lines, but failed to score. The defense was very strong again in every area. Kenneth Lipsey lead the defense along with Tommy Brown and Todd Parks. The Indians completed only one pass, that being the touchdown the Indians scored early in the game.

The “Young Lions’’ were for real as the offense finally jelled and scored 22 points. The defense yielded only 7 points. The remaining points came by an interception returned for a T.D. The Lion’s Johny Ray Smith blocked a punt and Jeff Varner scooted In for the touchdown. Kevin Fincher booted a field goal to make the score 10-0 before the Rams finally scored. Steve Barnes skirted in from 8 yards out and Junior back Howard Hughes put the icing on the cake when he scored from 19 yards out.

ENNIS-12 WACO-7
The Lions stormed from behind to edge the Tigers 12-7 for their third win in four games. No real excitement happened in the first half. The offense looked sluggish, and the Lion defense had to hold their ground. The Tigers scored first after a Lion fumble at their 17 yard line. This didn’t bother the Lions, they hooked it up and promptly drove 76 yards which was capped by an 8 yard T.D. pass from Richard Taylor to Johyn Smith. The Lion defense then went to work and gave the offense room to work. From there, the offense rose to the occasion when Keith Potter ran in from the 12 yard line for a 12-7 triumph.
ENNIS-13 WACO MIDWAY-34
The Lions must have been thinking of Waxahachie as the Panthers ambushed the Lions 34-13. The Lions made it look easy at first as Kenneth Haynes trotted in untouched. With less than 3 minutes gone, the Lions were leading 7-0. But after that, it was all Midway as they ripped through the defense for big yardage and stopped the offense cold in their tracks. Ronnie Knott connected with Jeff Varner on a 70 yard T.D. pass, but Midway drove again and put the final blow to an erratic Lion team downing them 34-13.
ENNIS-14 WAXAHACHIE-12
The Ennis Lions wanted this one badly. They crunched the Indians for the first three quarters and held on In the fourth to win the game 14-12. The first play saw Richard Taylor hit Jeff Varner on a 52 yard pass. Kenneth Haynes then booted a 20 yard field goal to give the Lions a 3-0 lead. The defense took their share of Lyndon Wilson and sacked him for a safety and a 5-0 lead. Sophomore Kicker Kevin Fincher then kicked a 31 yard field goal making a 8-0 lead at halftime. After an Indian score, Jeff Varner caught a 6 yard pass for a T.D., and the Lion defense held on to a 14-12 win.

The Lions rallied from behind and held on to defeat the Dragons 20-14 in Seagoville. The offense and defense looked sluggish in the first half. The Dragons held a 7-0 lead, but the Lions came out burning. Running back Kenneth Haynes bursted in from 14 yards for a 7-7 deadlock. The Lion Charles Edwards caught a 60 yard T.D. strike from Richard Taylor and 14-7 lead. The dragons were not through. Ricky Richards ran 70 yards for a tie game once again. All District back Kenneth Haynes then outran speedster Wallace Collier and scored from 17 yards out for the final score. The Dragons again threatened, but the defense held their ground on a fourth and 3 from the 3 yard line and stopped them short.

ENNIS-21 LANCASTER -20
Homecoming night saw the greatest comeback in history as the Lions rallied to beat the Tigers 21-20. The Tigers were awesome in the first quarter, dishing out everything they had to open up a 13-0 lead in less than 5 minutes. Richard Taylor found Charles Edwards for a 54 yard T.D. strike and a 13-6 deficit. The Tigers scored again to lead 20-6, but that was all for Andy Berry and the Tigers, as Kenneth Haynes then outran speedster Wallace Collier and scored from 17 yards out for the final score. The Dragons again threatened, but the defense held their gound on a fourth and 3 from the 3 yard line and stopped them short.

The Lions wrapped up a Zone Championship by demolishing the Tigers 23-0. The defense did not allow a first down until the second half—only 34 yards on 34 carries, most of that in the fourth quarter. The defense was led by Kenneth Lipsey, Todd Parks, Jeff Holley, and Tommy Brown. Tommy Brown returned a blocked punt for T.D. Kevin Fincher booted a 25 yard field goal, and Keith Potter danced in from 28 yards out for a 16-0 lead at halftime. Richard Taylor then hit Kevin Fincher for a 33 yard T.D. pass and a 23-0 win.

The Ennis Lions continued to tear their opponents apart by crushing the Eagles 32-7 for the last regular game of the season. The Eagles scored first after they intercepted a pass and drove in from the 11 yard line. After that, it was Ennis all the way as they promptly drove the field and Sophomore Steve Barnes ran in from 32 yards out. Howard Hughes then rumbled in from 17 yards out, and Jeff Varner caught an 18 yard pass from Richard Taylor, and the Lions lead 18-7 in the first half. Sophomore Steve Barnes then jolted some 68 yards for a Lion’s score. Keith Potter then ran in from 6 yards out and the Lions had a 32-7 victory.

McKinney—17
The Lions rally fell short of time and effort as McKinney put in a defense attack which netted Ennis only 120 yards on the ground. The Ennis Lions rallied from a 14-3 deficit to a 14-11 barnburner, but McKinney was not to be denied. They went the length of the field and booted a field goal to a 17-11 lead. Down 14-0, Kevin Fincher kicked a 16 yard field goal for a 14-3 score. Kenneth Haynes them rumbled in for a 14-9 score and went for two, which was successful and a 14-11 squeaker. For the Ennis Lions it was a good year. Ennis supported the best district record at 8-2-0 and a Zone Championship Crown.

GraduationNow It’s Time For Moving On
We’ve traveled a long, long time together,
And there have been a lot of good things on the way. But now,
It’s almost time for leaving,
And the things we feel inside, are very hard to say.
But it’s time for moving on friends,
Hold back all the tears and sorrow,
It finally is time
to go our separate ways.
