Handicapped by lack of weight, experience, and after the second game, limeburns, the Lions were never able to put or full-strength team on the field. . Denison downed the Lions nineteen to nothing in the first game of the season: then Waxa- hachie followed up with a twenty-six to nothing defeat on a rain-soaked gridiron. Minus four starters, Ennis was taken easily by Temple to the tune of thirty-five to nothing. Ennis scored for the first time in the Bryan game, which the Broncos took twenty-six to seven. McKinney turned back the Lions thirteen to nothing. Cleburne ran up the top-heavy score of forty-four to nothing, and Hillsboro followed through with a fifty to nothing blasting. Coming from behind in the last quarter, the Lions took their first game by a twelve to six count. Ft. Worth Tech was the victim. Ennis climbed from the district cellar with a seven to six win over the Cor- sicana Tigers, and finished off the season by scoring more points against State Co-Champion, Waco, than were scored by any other team. The Tigers won 49-19, but it was a proud Lion team that left Waco that night. lt was a poor season, as far as victories g o, but the Lions proved to the satisfaction of all concerned that they had earned the right to be called, in an old and glorious tradition, "Ennis's Fightin' Lions." v Z ...di M ....:."2'- I ' ' J- ' ,.., K - --,L jr I 2 - i " 5 Q I 7 . The most important honor of the year was winning third place in District 10-AA, acknowledged to be the toughest district in the state. While topped by Waco and Bryan, Ennis beat out Wazgahachie, Temple, Cleburne, Hillsboro, and Corsicana. The Lions scored 394 points on district opponents while allowing 380 to be scored on them. ln the Palmer tournament, the Lions downed Wortham, Forreston, ltaly, and Ferris to win first place. Morgan, Ennis forward, was selected on the all-tournament team. ln the Dr. Pepper tournament, the Lions were stopped by Greenville who took third place in the state race this year. ln the consolation bracket, the Lions defeated Frisco and then lost to Adamson tof Dallasl to drop out of the tournament. In the Eorreston tournament Ennis beat Penelope, Morgan, and Ferris-then lost to Forreston to take sec- ond place. lames Lovell was selected on their- all-tournament team. ln the Ferris tournament the Lions lost to Pleasant Grove in the first game. "Buddy" Wilson was the all-tournament man there. The Lions Won 25 games and lost 11-giving them a season's average of 7072. lndividual scoring for the first team was as follows: Wilson-237: Morgan-2005 Lovell-1797 Gorman-1335 Glaspy-83. At the close of the season Gorman and Wilson were elected co-captains of the team. While not winning every game, the Lions showed a fighting spirit that managed to win some close ones, and made every game a real contest. fcowmfrla fwzw ENNlS OPPONENT ENNIS OPPONENT 35 Forreston 29 42 Corsicana 15 44 Corsicana 43 21 Penelope 17 63 Wortham 5 25 Cleburne 22 30 Italy 28 .40 Morgan 27 24 Forreston 23 33 Ferris 27 36 Ferris 18 28 Forreston 30 43 Corsicana 28 28 Bryan 58 18 Waxahachie 17 40 Bardwell 38 18 Waxahachie 26 39 Bardwell 32 20 Greenville 45 26 Waco 42 29 Frisco 19 34 Waxahachie 24 27 Adamson 47 30 Temple 21 51 Cleburne 24 39 Hillsboro 38 24 Bryan 40 48 Corsicana 22 22 Waco 53 49 Bardwell 31 22 Waxahachie 38 38 Forreston 25 39 Temple 32 41 Bardwell 33 31 Hillsboro 41 34 Pl. "1" .sa-i THE KIWANIS CLUB The Kiwanis Club is one of the most recently organized civic groups in Ennis, furthermore, it is one of the most active. - There has been no civic organization during the current year which has done so many out- standing things for our high school as have been accomplished by the Kiwanis Club. In the first place, the program inaugurated for the nine outstanding young men who were chosen as Student Kiwanians set a goal to which every boy in high school aspires. These seniors, chosen by a secret committee, followed the routine of the active members-they wore the pin, sang the songs, listened to business, and gave a speech. Through these associations the business men and the students became better acquainted. Another remarkable accomplishment was achieved when this club sponsored the tuberculosis tests which were administered to every student in the high school. It is also to be noted that interested Kiwanis Club members are sponsoring both a Boy Scout Troop and a Brownie Girl Scout Troop in our city. With the progressive spirit manifested constantly by these business and professional people, it is easy to see that this group is carrying out its excellent motto, "We build"-not only for our high school but also for the entire town. Leading in these numerous activities are the following officers and directors: President, Rev. S. T. Francis, First Vice-President, Owen Gilpin, Second Vice-President, J. C. McCraryg Sec- retary-Treasurer, A. R. Merritt g Directors, Dr. A. L. Thomas, F. A. Moseley, Wesley Knize, Dr. R. E. Erisman, W. R. Schween, G. G. Dunkerley, Jr., and D. W. Ramsay.
