This program provides an atmosphere where students feel relaxed and comfortable. The academic structures of the program are strong and excellent and students are challenged to do well. Along with hard effort the students put forth are the activities which are fun and educational. Indeed this program is a great learning center for any student that is willing to succeed in a high school education. April 1, 1987 The Traditional Letter It is appropriate that as members of America ' s oldest public high school, we are also members of not only a Traditional program, but also a Tradition of education, cooperation, and hope. We are not unlike a family. Over the past four years we have had our share of disagreements, conflicts, and setbacks, but here, within these covers, we are all together again. This joint appearance or family reunion is possible because, like a family, we supported, forgave, and learned from one another. As we, the class of 1987, are about to be graduated from the English High School ' s Traditional Program we take many fond memories with us. Whether it has been in the classroom, corridor, or atheletic field these shared growth or personal experiences have created bonds among us to last a life time. As we emerge on the brink of young adulthood we have retained experiences from Traditional that have made us stronger, wiser, and more mature. The Traditional program has built a solid foundation for us to take as we go to pursue college, a trade, a job, or whatever it may be to create successful men and women of the future. We offer gratitude and thanks to the headmaster, Mr. Smith, who has been like a father to us, and the assistant headmaster, Mr. Leonard, who has been like a big brother. To the people of the Guidance department of traditional who have been our confidantes, advisors, mentors, and inspiration we say thanks. We would like a special thanks to go to the teachers and the countless others who have been our strength when we ' ve needed them. Someday we hope to give back to the traditional program all that it has given to us. Lisa Hollins HEADMASTER ' S MESSAGE It is with great pride, and no small sense of loss, that I bid farewell to the Class of ' 87. When I first came into the school, in September of 1984, you had just finished your first year at English High School, and you were being asked to undergo a tremendous change, as you entered your sophomore year. That year was an exciting, though difficult, year for the school, for each of you, and for me. Now three years later, I ' m being asked to let go of you, and I feel much as I ' ve felt when I ' ve been forced to allow my own children to pass through their stages to adulthood. On the one hand, I ' m very excited that each and every one of you has survived and achieved to the point that you are now graduates of English High School. On the other hand, I feel a great loss, in that I won ' t be able to share in your lives in the years to come. You ' ve all meant a great deal to me. I only hope you know how much you ' ve contributed to my life, as I ' ve tried to contribute to yours, in some small way. You really have so much to be proud of. You have outlasted many of your peers, in your struggle to get a diploma. You ' ve overcome innumerable obstacles in making it to this point, and you ' ve risen to the occasion, time and time again. Most importantly, you ' ve grown to the point that you ' re ready to make your mark, as an individual, and as a member of your community. However, now is not the time to bathe in your success, or to lose sight of the future, and the opportunities that are available to you, if you ' ll allow them to be. You will be as great and as powerful as your sights will allow, so set those sights high, and accept nothing but the best for yourselves. You are beautiful, courageous men and women, and you owe it to those of us you leave behind, those you have yet to meet, and most importantly, you owe it to yourselves to be your very best, in whatever you choose to do. Accept your greatness; accept your responsibilities to yourself, and to others. Take a bold step out of adolescense, contribute, and seek to make a difference in the lives of everyone you come in contact with. For now, I have to say a somewhat reluctant goodbye. I do hope that you ' ll take the time to return, even for a moment, to let all of us know how well you ' re doing " out there " . On behalf of the whole staff, we ' ll miss you, and we ' ll be forever proud of you. Go with pride; go with respect; and go with determination! Best of luck, and best wishes always! Sophomores Kathy Brown, Erika Sanders, Nicole Hypo- lite contributed strongly and Fresh- men starters Antonia " Shorty " Macklin, Gloria Mays, Precious Drayton were a great surprise pack- age for coaches Green and Parker. Our girls also qualified for the State Basketball tournament and had an exciting first round victory over New Bedford H.S. before bowing out to eventual South Sectional Champion Brockton H.S. With dedication and hard work, Coach Avila and the Bulldogs have been able to maintain their spot amongst the top three. With the energy and enthusiasm from this team, 1987 is sure to be a championship year for English High School. This goal is clearly not out of reac h for the Bulldogs, since eight of the starting players will return next season. Among them, is Freshmen Renald Joseph. He led the team with eight goals and four assists, for a total of twelve points. Milfleur Rodeal- bert followed with four goals and three assists. Coach Avila will have to build another winning team next season, after the loss of his ssenior players - Guerns Bernadeau, Gtflos Hijaire, Noon Votha and Saint SuVin Renaild. The Bulldogs are among the lead- ers after the 1987 City League Tro- phy. The Bulldogs bark will be heard around Boston this year. On Thursday, January 15th, students from Mr. Marston ' s Senior English Honors class participated in a presentation in honor of Martin Luther King ' s birthday. Written and directed by Ms. Nathan, it centered on Civil Rights activities in Birmingham, Alabama in 1963. The presentation included poems, historical background, and excerpts from speeches by Martin Luther King and President John F. Kenne- dy. The cast did an excellent job, with notable per- formances by Faith Henry, Tara Hightower, Diane Clagon and Frederick Mullins.
