Some will be in college, some will be working, and some " bulldogs " will simply be " barking up the wrong tree. " To all of you I dedicate this. The English High School Class of ' 84 History According to Pedro I ' m gonna break the rules. I ' m not gonna include the ORC freshman recruit, nor the broken escalator sophomore years in this historical account of our years at English. No. I ' m not going to write about that dark and gloomy time that was filled with puzzling days as we first tasted the bitter fruits of a foreign language. Nor am I to write of those mysterious class absences that were recorded in teacher annals as being " cuts " .... of all the undone homework, and of the time when playing " hooky " was " in " . Not even of the victorious battle over Latin ' s Wolfpack football team that Thanksgiving morn of ' 81. No, I am going to write about the prosperous years. The years when hunger for knowledge abounded; the time of great cultural advancements .... As we entered the portals of our great English High School on that brisk September morn in the beginning of our junior year in 1982, we pretty much knew what was in store for us. Or at least that ' s what we thought. As time passed, we realized, with great difficulty, that 6.02 x 10 " ' was Avogadro ' s way of counting a group of molecules, which we did not confuse with angstroms because we all knew what they were, right? All of us thought we had the English language down pat until we had a dose of Ms. Fahey. Gerunds, participles, subjunctives and all those good things were from that time on incorporated in our hearts and minds forever, weren ' t they? Sure w ' e all knew our math. I mean who didn ' t know the quadratic formula was used for solving equations that were impossible by the trial and error method? Who didn ' t know that linear graphs could be calculated by the use of the point- slope formula, or, if you preferred, the y-intercept one which was just as good? Who could forget the class elections? That time of year when Lorraine Grubbs was chosen to guide us through parties, dances, and even the collection of class dues as president of the junior class. How she and the other class officers were constant- ly negotiating with headmaster Corscadden for class privileges and opportunities? For many of us it became a time of personal growth. A time when boys and girls became more t han mere objects. A time when love roamed the hallways affecting everyone in its path. Finals. It was that time again. All of us were nervous and knew it. This was it. The one obstacle that barred us from officially being dubbed seniors. Yes, we did tackle them with great ferocity . and won. We were seniors and damed proud of it too! Apart from such great memories, let us not forget the sad times. We lost Mr. DiGiralomo, a truly good teacher and friend. As Kathy Evelyn put it, " He somehow managed to keep himself open to us. If we ever needed him he was always there ready to give us that fatherly advice which we longed for. Mr. D always told us how much he loved us, and he only wanted us to learn because he cared about us. " To all who knew and loved him, it was a time of great personal loss and mourning. After taking a breather for the summer, we returned once more in the Fall of ' 83. Things had changed. We all had new and very different perspectives. Why? What was it that made us so? It dawned on us that we were seniors. That we were the top " bulldogs " of the school, and that we could flaunt our seniority everywhere. It felt good. It felt extremely good. We were able to change the pattern. We accomplished what former seniors had tried to do but had failed. We made English better. We were no longer seen as aggressors in the eyes of the public. English was changing and everyone knew it. The Bulldog Bark made its debut. Many of us saw the importance ol liijiher education raising the college entrance percentages. All of a sudden competitive sports became important again and student supported. It was the year of the raffle ticket invasion from the ambitious theatre class to Mr. Foley ' s Washington ( " lose-Up team. Something special was happening to the school. What was it? I like to think of it as school spirit. Yes, the graduating class of ' 84 had revived the once dead school spirit! The seniors we elected as officers, Ivon Perez - president, John Baez - vice- president, Crystal -Jones - treasurer, Paula Rosa - secretary, and Anne Mistivar - bilingual representative, all did a great job leading us through our last year at Knglish. Many of us will not easily forget all those research papers. Nor those days (and nights) in the library searching to find just the right information for such a great cause. How can we so readily forget the blissful hours spent typing them for our lovable F nglish teachers? Ah, those were the days. Where have they gone? Whatever happened to Mr. O ' Neill ' s wonderful forty minute physics class where we learned that K = 4KT ' T ( 1 + I fr ] i [ f! hieroglyphics at all, but a method for calculating the net rate |)er square centimeter at which heat is transferred from a dominating warmer object to one less thermal? Or to Mr. Green ' s fascinating trig class where we found out that sines and cosines were actually useful? SAT ' s came and went, as did college applications. We began to receive answers. Some of us would attend Northeastern, some B.U., U.Mass - Amherst, Wellesley, Emmanuel, Tufts, Mass. College of Art, Burdett, and Johnson and Wales, just to name a few. Yes, we were ready for June. All we had to do now was wait. For many of us school was, for all practical purposes, over. By May 22 all seniors had signed out. Many of us would be looking for work; some would just rest for a while. June came. It is said that as a man drowns, his entire life passes before his field of vision. I don ' t know if this is true, but I do know that as I walked across the stage on that warm June night that also celebrated my eighteenth birthday, faint thoughts of the past flashed before me. I remembered the day I wasn ' t allowed in the building because I was late and had no note .... I had two exams that day! I remembered the Close-Up trip when Hector Johnson was left in Washington; he tTew back to Boston on another flight by himself. The Riverside trip came to mind ... The ferris wheel broke down and left Anne Misti - var and me stranded for 20 minutes. I recalled the class picnic at Hopkington Park when Mr. Moyer and I splashed everyone with water after the " water cup " races. I remember how John Baez had eyed May Azar when she first came to English in December from Lebanon; how German Garcia and Quyen Tang, the prom king and queen, always secretly met in Mr. Gal- lagher ' s math room during lunchtime; how Yinnaing Phung almost always had the correct answer in physics; how Mr. Fee- ley got mad when students went to him . . . when he wasn ' t even their counselor; how Autilio Burgo had to say his " to be or not to be " in private because of his extreme stage fright; how Sammy Rios made his comeback .... and succeeded; how Brian Pritchard always gave us the rap on sports each morning in history class; how Hassen Abdulkerim never received his finan- cial aid package from U Mass-Amherst .... after calling them 14 times; how Eddie Mieses was the only student to apply to Harvard . . . and was rejected; how I never finished my senior essay; how Ivon Perez used to tell me about all the " stupid and dumb " people she had to put up with while working in Filene ' s Basement; how it dawned on me that Michael Lowe was the only senior graduating who belonged to the dying breed of " dead heads " ; how I once cut art class . . . and was caught; how John Hudson tried to recite his poem in English class but couldn ' t and it was only 3 ' 2 lines long; and how Elias Liriano and Eddie Mieses once acted out a sword fight between a king from Norway and one from Denmark .... dressed in Roman togas and armed with wooden swords. I also remem- bered the crowded morning trolleys, all the unfinished home- Pedro L. Urbina 1984 Class Historian work, and, for some reason. I even remembered my prom date . . maybe because it was my sister! As I received my diploma from Mr. Cors- cadden I couldn ' t help but to laugh as it hit me that he had messed up on his graduation speech introducing Ivon Perez as valedictorian, and Paula Rosa as class president. On a more serious note thought, I remembered what Dr. Martin Luther King once said, " Free at last! Free at last! " For we were trulv free at last. 77 SENIOR PROM I HASSEN ABDl ' LKP]RIM Birthdate: May B Ambition: Me- chanical Rnaineer fa ' MARTHE ALEXANDER Nickname; Martie Birthdate: Au- gust " 27 Ambition: Nursing SHIRLEY ADGER Nickname: Nay Birthdate: March 24 Favorite Expression: " VV ' haaaaat?
