The English High School presents THE RECORD 77 Avenue Louis Pasteur Boston, Massachusetts 021 IS We the class of 1979, dedicate our yearbook to the past, present, and future members of the English High School community. We dedicate it to the peo- ple of the past, who made our school what it is today, and who through the years brought prestige and pride to the name of English High School. We remember also the present mem- bers of the community, who are continu- ing this tradition, and the future mem- bers, who will carry on this history and value it as much as we do. I I In 1821 The English High School be- came the first public school in America. It began as an all boys school and later devel- oped into a 10 story co-ed school. The Class of 79 arrived at The English High in the early stages of busing. Stu- dents from various parts of the city en- tered this " new and different " art magnet high school as freshmen. Because of the tension, it took time for the classmates to become well adjusted to this new environ- ment. But changes were taking place, as they had taken place in English ' s past. People attending the school became a group belonging together-learning-at The English High School. Site of New English High School ;f | |IJ City Of Boston Kevin H. To those who knew them well they are fortunate, for they have good memories. To those who did not, they can recall their cheerful smiles and friendly atti- tudes. The times we shared and the memories we cherish will re- main in our hearts forever. 39 jiKjtr and V 7 Remember When Remember When Remember When 42 Remember When Remember When Mr. Peterkin was here. We could communicate with the Headmaster. The Headmaster gave us our morning an- nouncements, in the morning. Mr. Lane was acting Headmaster (sigh). Ms. Bellamy was a nice Spanish teacher. Mr. Berman was a teacher, not a sweeper. Mr. Speaks was here, and it was a pleasure to go to gym. Mr. Spratling was here. Mr. Saunders used his whip. Mr. Corcoran gave us vocabulary words. Mr. Johnson could talk about English, and women at the same time. Mr. Donovan told jokes. Ms. Isreal was Ms. Isreal. We could put one over on the nurses. The school was clean and looked good. The escalators worked. There were locks on the inside of the bath- room doors, and you could use the bathrooms in peace. The second floor looked decent. The air-conditioners were on in the winter. Lockers worked. We could sit on the plaza. There was a flood on the 4th floor. We had lunch at the pizza truck. We had bake sales. We had our Thanksgiving day football games. We had pep rallies and cheerleaders. Alex Haley came to visit. We had the Blizzard of ' 78. We had a Christmas without snow. We had half days on Wednesdays. We saw alot of plays. We had the Gong Show. We had the car wash. We were freshmen. We came for our first day at English High. We had tests on Fridays. Everyone had to get immunized. We were waiting to hear from colleges. A special Remembrance to; Ray Justice and Steven Schully English High had Spirit. We were here the class of 79. C r FACULTY Headmaster ' s Message To The Class Of 1979 While a year in the life of The English High School is important, given its history, a year is but a brief moment. However, this year is still memorable in many ways. It was the first year for a new headmaster and a new superintendent took office. The year that graduation requirements were stiffened. 1978-79 was the 4th year of the Magnet Art Show which was a bigger success than ever. Hopefully, it is the year that English high graduates will go out to produce and contribute to a better world. As the graduates leave, I have just a simple request. Remember where you go from and seek always to help those who follow after you. Your brothers, sisters, and friends can receive an even better eduction than you have if you assist them in avoiding the pitfalls and traps along the way.
