FRESHMAN The summer came and went, and we, the class of 1967 entered the English High School Freshman Annex early in September of 1963 to begin an interesting experience. We soon became familiar with our master-in-charge Mr. Gillis, and with the rest of the fine faculty. At the end of October we received our first report cards despite our wishing that the IBM Machine would break down. Better luck next time! The schoolboy football season opened as our mighty team beat B.C. High, South Boston, and Boston Trade. Then on November 16 at Russell Field in Cambridge, Rindge Tech upset English by a score of 8-0 and ended our 19 game winning streak, the longest in the state. An event occurred on Friday, November 22, 1963 that no boy shall ever forget. By the time school ended that day rumors had already been circulating that President Kennedy had been shot, but no one knew for sure until they got home to find it true. Vice-President Johnson was im- mediately sworn in as our new President. The traditional Thanksgiving Day football game was played as scheduled the following Thursday, despite the assassination of the Presi- dent. However, at the beginning of the game, 20,000 fans rose from their seats in Harvard Stad- ium to honor the memory of the late John F. Kennedy. Half-time music by both bands was eliminated. At the end, English had scored another win over arch-rival Latin. Our Swimming Team had a great year as it finished first in the state, but all other teams were in the process of rebuilding. In the later half of the year, we took the NEDT Tests to determine how smart we were. As our first year came to a close, all of us look- ed forward to moving into the main building on Avenue Louis Pasteur in the Fenway.

SOPHOMORE Summer vacation ended as we moved into the main building in the Fenway to begin our Sopho- more year at English High School. We were soon told by Headmaster Joseph L. Malone what was expected from an English High School student. The main building lacked the appearance of the White House, but we decided to make the most out of it, for we had no choice. Our football team also left much to be desired as it finished the season with a 4-3-1 record and lost to the school across the street on Turkey Day as Captain Mario Caporale missed a field goal by less than a yard. Our Hockey Team had a successful season as it won the City League Crown. Mr. Gillis’ track team won the co-championship of New England as our swimming team won the Eastern Mass. Championship. Hundreds of weak sophomores were now sign- ing up in Mr. Duffey’s self-defense course. Once we were in the main building, it didn’t take long before we realized that the square thing on the wall, usually referred to as a Public address sys- tem speaker, could bother us while we were tak- ing tests. It also worked the opposite way; it could waste time too. The next event that occurred that year was the highly successful Home and School Fashion Show. This annual show has always raised much money for scholarships for boys going to college. June rolled around the corner as we finished our second year at America’s oldest public high school. Half the battle was over! At ease, gentlemen!” Bombardieri and his big ears”
