Mead Master ' s Message As Head Master, may I extend to the members of the Class of 1965 my best wishes for successful achievement in the years that lie ahead. Your graduation this year marks the one hundred and forty-fourth anniver- sary of the founding of the English High School. Through the years, many of our graduates have given generously of their talent and ability to serve their city, state, or nation with honor and distinction. They ha ve left for us a high level of achievement which should challenge your best efforts. I know that you the members of the Class of 1965 will find in their example, the devotion to God and country, the loyalty, and the high purpose which should characterize your own efforts and assist you in meeting effectively your respon- sibilities in the future in a manner that is worthy of the fine tradition of your school. The publication of your Year Book gives me an opportunity as Head Master to express our thanks for your splendid service to the school during the past few years. Many of you have given generously of your time and effort to the school. Others have demonstrated their specialized abilities or have given excellent lead- ership and direction to undergraduate activities. All have worked cooperatively in curricular and extra-curricular activities. To the knowledge and skills which you acquired here, additional knowledge and new abilities must be added through further schooling or educational de- velopment to the end that you may achieve your full potential and make your maximum contribution to society. The world welcomes your youth, your strength, your knowledge and skills, and your eagerness to learn and to achieve. You are leaving the school at a time when the cold war of nerves among nations threatens our very existence and the future of mankind. Never before has the ingenuity and intelligence of man been so challenged as it is today. To meet this challenge, the world calls for a special kind of effort and sacri- fice from each and every one of us. It calls for intelligence, devotion to duty, purposiveness, and service to mankind. Therefore, you must study to develop your intellect and use it to good purpose for God, country, and fellow man. More important still, it calls for the essential goodness which lies within each of us and which in the long run becomes more important to us and to mankind than the greatness we are so quick to seek and acclaim. I urge you to make the most of your opportunities, especially those for doing good, to the end that you may be of service to mankind and your life may be one of honor and achievement. May God bless your every effort. Joseph L. Malone Head Master

Msistant Mead M(fster ' s Message At this momentous point in your lives, I cannot help recall- ing the legacy of wise counsel given to my graduating class. This advice has been easy to remember over the years. It is summed up in one word . . . WATCH. WATCH does not imply a passive acceptance of the externals of human ex- perience. Rather, it emphasizes the active self-direction of the individual. Expressed anacrostically, WATCH urges each of us to concern himself with his Words, Actions, Thoughts, Con- science, and Heart. I commend to you this constant self-evaluation, confident that it will find expression in ever-rising levels of aspiration and achievement. William Devore Assistant Head Master
