Mead Meester ’s Message As Head Master, may I extend to the members oF the Class of 1961 my best wishes for suceessful achievement in the years that lie ahead. Your graduation this year marks the one hundred and fortieth anniversary of the founding of The English High School. Through the years, many of our graduates have given generouslv of their talent and ability to serve their city, state, or nation with honor and distinction. They have left for us a high level of achievement which should challenge your best efforts. I know that you the members of the Class of 1961 will hnd in their example, the devotion to God and country, the loyalty, and the high purpose which should characterize vour own efforts and assist you in meeting effectively your responsibilities in the future in a manner that is worthy of the fine traditions of your school. The publication of your Year Book gives me an opjwrtunity as Head Master to express our thanks for your spendid service to die school during the past few vears. Manv of vou have given generouslv of your time and effort to the school. Others have demonstrated their specialized abilities or have given excellent leadership and direction to undergraduate activities. All have worked cooperatively in curricular and extra-curricular activities. To the knowledge and skills which vou acquired here, additional knowledge and new ' abilities must be added through further schooling or educational develop- ment to the end that vou may achieve your full potential and make your maximum contribution to society. The world w ' elcomes your vouth, vour strength, your knowledge and skills, and vour eagerness to learn and to achieve. You are leaving the school at a time when the cold war of nerves among nations threatens our verv existence and the future of mankind. Never before has the ingenuity and intelligence of man been so challenged as it is todav. To meet this challenge, the world calls for a special kind of effort and sacrifice from each and everv one of us. It calls for intelligence, devotion to dutv. purposiveness, and service to mankind. Therefore, you must studv to develop vour intellect and use it to good purpose for God, countrv, and fellow man. More important still, it calls for tlie essential goodness which lies within each of us and which in the long run becomes more important to us and to mankind than the greatness we are so quiek to seek and acclaim. I urge you to make the most of vour opportunities, especially those for doing good, to the end that vou may be of service to mankind and your life mav be one of honor and achievement. May God bless your every effort.
