TIME flies and draws us with it. The nionient in which I am speakin-? is already far from me. Time ' s waters will not ebb nor stay. That illimitable, silent, never-resting thing called Time, rolls rushingly on, swiftly and silently. Know the true value of time; snatch, seize, and enjoy every moment of it. Never put off till tomorrow ichat you can do today. Four years — four little years that have raced by with the speed of a cyclone — four drops of time, we, an army of 700 seniors, have spent together. Have we rriade good use of the time that has been ours? Have we been capitalizing every priceless minute? It not, where do we stand? Is it too late? No, it is not. To those who have wasted their time, it only means harder work and study, more pep and vim, and wiser acting. There are many of us, are there not, who, in our leisure time, sat in seclusion, thinking first of the past, then of the future. For years we have always awaited the summer vacations. In those summer days we went swimming, played baseball, or went to camp. But this year it seems dififerent. As usual, the sum- mer draws near, but we do not await it like past years. This summer we graduate ; we bid farewell to our Alma Mater, good old English High School. Of course, there are many of us who have already de- cided to continue our studies at college. But what of those audacious and ever-trying graduates who can- not af?ord as yet to go to college? Like the early fathers of our country they must face and plug the same impenetrable barriers. This summer, many of them will have to find work in order that they may heap enough savings to enter a higher institution of learning next fall. But to those who have made no attempt in their studies, who have made no use of the golden, priceless hours of school — to these unpre- meditated, unwise scholars, there befalls a colossal, mountainous barrier, larger than ever, to smear and break down. Study they must, harder and harder. To our athletes, sprinters, ball hawks, and stadium celebrities, we wish barrel-loads of success ; but they, too, must be wide awake at all times. Remember Harry Jones, who was heralded as one of the greatest ball carriers in professional football, and whose press clippings were more conveniently weighed than measured? To make a long story short, he never amounted to anything; for, as we all know, press clippings, at the present time, are worth less than a dime a ton. Years ago, a wild-running halfback whose name had been screaming in headlines, could sell his grid glory at a tremendous price. But that occured in the days when stock quotations looked like telephone numbers — the days when star athletes had jobs awaiting them. But nowadays grid glory or stadium cel- ebrity is worth less than a two-cent stamp. As one noted sportsman remarked recently: " As for the present, a college degree, a football reputation and a nickel will get you a cup of cof?ee any place, but— make sure you have the nickel! " So, fellow seniors, we are leaving the land of dreams and are entering the land of reality. The ro- mantic high school days must give way to the realities of the outside world. Emotion grips us, mystery thrills us at the thought of what awaits us in this outside world. You are being granted a great responsi- bility when you graduate from English High School. As yet, we do not fully realize the importance of being English High School graduates. True, our blood tingles when we hear of the success and accom- plishments of our preceding alumni. But only time, rolling on unceasingly, will actually prove how really fortunate we are in graduating from the English High School. We are leaving the school that has been our " home " for the past four years. We are leaving its cosy fireside to go out into a cold world. Perhaps no other class has ever plunged into a world colder and more cruel than is the Class of ' 35. But we are not upset in the least over this. The spirit of English High will kindle within us and. in spite of what fate has in store for us, we will be warm and hopeful. Whether you enter college or go into business, it is your duty to maintain the School ' s reputation. You developed a school spirit while here. Now you are leaving, and something more than school spirit is desired of you. Dear old Alma Mater wants " school love, " and school love we shall give her. As we leave, let us not forget that grand English High School motto: Be Clean! Be Courteous! Be Square! Fareivell! a zcord that must be, and hath been — A sound which makes 2is linger; — yet — jareivell! AmADEO J. FULCINITI, ' 35. Herbert Lipsitz, ' 35. Nautical School 68 ENGLISH HIGH SCHOOL RECORD By CORXKLIUS Under the l)laziiig heat of the Egyptian sky, trudg- ing along through the loose, shifting sand of the Sahara Desert, a small party of Egyptian workmen, led by three white men, were making their way towards a small oasis which was to be their base camp for a few weeks. Dr. John Powers, one of the world ' s most eminent archaeologists, was in charge of the party. ' al Stevens, a young college graduate, together with Jerry Wheeler, a noted authority on Egyptian sorcery and Oriental mysticisms, made up the number of white men in the party. Fifty Egyptian workmen were under their charge. These men were terrified lest the curses of the ancient rulers, supposedly laid upon those who defiled the tombs of the pharohs, fall upon them. " Should we find this tomb, doctor, " said Jerry, " it will clear up the mystery of the break in the Ptolemy dynasty. " " Yes, Jerry. " said the doctor, " but remember these tombs were hidden by the craftiest race of all time. Well, here we are; Boda, have the boys pitch camp; wc will remain here for a few weeks. " For two weeks, under the pitiless sun of the Sahara Desert, they searched and dug in vain. Finally, Dr. Powers gave the men a rest to prevent the grumbling which had arisen in the ranks of the workmen. One night, as they slept, the cool wind stopped. The heat and silence became oppressive, something was in the air, was it ... . death? No, for in a half hour with a shriek and a wail a great sandstorm swept up from the south. For four hours it raged, filling the air with whirling sand, causing the party to take refuge under hastily constructed shelters. When they returned to the scene of their operations, they found to their dismay that the excavations had been filled in. They decided to try a new spot. As the leaders, followed by the workmen, toiled over a hill, little did they know of the surprise in store for them. Val Stevens reached the summit first. The rest stopped as they heard a crj ' from him. They looked up. Val was pointing down the opposite side, his mouth hang- ing open with amazement. Suddenly he regained his composure and ran, plunging through the sand, out of their sight. Hurriedly they reached the top, bunched together. Silence struck them. The workmen began to murmur and move restlessly back and forth, for there, down in the valley below, glistening in the sun, lay the tomb of the greatest Pharoh of Egypt, King Farqui. YaV Stevens was standing in front of it waving his arms excitedly to them. They all went down and examined it closely. Cut deeply into the door were a few lines of hieroglyphics. of ti)t ©eab ' ' C. SliERIDAX, 06 Boda stepped forward and in a low, sepulchral voice he translated, " Death unto those who defile the tombs of the Pharohs. " Silence gripped everyone for a moment. " Bosh, " cried Dr. Powers, " don ' t let a few words frighten you in such a manner. Prepare at once to open the tomb. " Slowly and with a great deal of grumbling, the men unpacked the necessary implements. Late that afternoon Dr. Powers, accompanied by his colleagues and Boda, entered the dark, mysterious aperture of the chamber wherein lay the remains of a once magnificent ruler. When the lid of the ancient coffin was opened, silence filled the chamber. In full view lay the shrivelled form of Farqui, the once pompous ruler of half a continent. In his corrugated hands lay a yel- lowed parchment. Boda translated a few lines. ' ' al Stevens broke in suddenly, " We ' ve found it, doctor! We ' ll be famous. We know now that it was the Persians who overcame the Ptolemy dynasty and plunged their records into such a sad state. " Suddenly he stopped, " Listen, " he said. A low, moaning whistle filled the room. Then a harsh, mournful, savage tone filled the death chamber. " You were warned once not to enter, now let Osiris fulfill his promise of ... . death. " A low, terrifying, maniacal laugh echoed throughout the room. Those who heard it were rooted to the spot, horrified. A few weeks later, after having passed the Egyptian customs and ha ing deeded a percentage of their dis- covery to the government, they took passage on a large ship bound for America, shipping the mummy with all its belongings on the same boat. One stormy night three days out to sea, the Captain was startled by a weird blue light that sprang out of the fog directly in front of the vessel. The passengers thronged to the bow of the ship to see this phenome- non. Growing slowly but distinctly appeared a vague form, shadowed by the blue light. A hand slowly rose from one side of it, pointing directly at the party standing with Dr. Powers. Mournfully, in a deep, lifeless tone, a voice repeated the phrase which had been haunting their memories for the past few weeks. " Death unto those who defile the tombs of the Pharohs. " The women screamed in horror and the men stood rooted to the spot, frightened by this weird spectacle. The next day the ship ' s steward reported to the captain that a mysterious malady was afflicting the passengers. Death soon followed, and despite the frantic efforts of the ship ' s doctor it ran its grim course the length and breadth of the ship. Later in the day a tramp steamer contacted the ship in response to the frantic S. O. S. calls which had ENGLISH HIGH SCHOOL RECORD 69 been sent out. It was sailing ' steadily along with a dead crew and passengers. The giant liner was towed to a nearby port, where the ship was fumigated and unloaded of its grisly cargo. The officials soon became aware of the value of the ancient treasures and shipped them to America on the next liner touch- ing at their harbor. This was the last seen of the ship bearing these priceless treasures of a bygone age, for the ship had been none other than that well known vessel whose tragic ending startled the world, the Titanic. Whetiier or not the ancient Gods of Egypt caused the foundering, I cannot tell, but it stands to reason that horror and death accompanied the remains of Farqui throughout the short journey from his death chamber to his final resting place in the depths of the sea. Strangely enough another sandstorm completely covered the giant tomb in the heart of the desert, and since then it has never been uncovered, though many noted explorers and archaeologists have tried again and again. i;. DEBATING SOCIETY The recently organized Debating Society has made a most auspicious debut. The members have overcome the formidable task in front of them. Friday evening. March 29, was a big event, both for the debating team and the social life of the school. This was the night of the meeting of English High and Latin School on our own platform in public formal debate. The question was, Resolved : " That the Federal Government Should Equalize Educational Opportunity by Means of Annual Grants for Public Elementary and Secondary Education in the Several States. " English High took the negative and was ably represented by Robert L. Langlois, J. Leonard Hennessy, and Donald R. Duby — all of the class of ' 35. The affirmative side was upheld by John T. Henderson, Eugene V. McAuliffe, Norman A. Ober of Latin School. Langlois gave a very effective rebuttal speech for the negative. There was no decisio i. James E. Downey, Ph.D., Headmaster of the High School of Commerce, was chairman of the evening. The English High School Orchestra, directed by Le Roy M. Rand, and the Public Latin School Glee Club, directed by T. Francis Burke, furnished the entertainment. The society wishes to express its deep gratitude to Mr. Moloney, coach and director, for his earnest interest and hard work devoted to the interest and success of the society. We thank Mr. Downey for his interest and co-operation. We owe many thanks to Mr. Sheehan, our business manager, for his zealous work. We thank Mr. McCool, Mr. Powers, Mr. Malone, Mr. Hayes, and Mr. O ' Leary for their valuable help and advice. 70 ENGLISH HIGH SCHOOL RECORD School Notes | Bv J ' HN T. READY. BLUE AND BLUE RIFLE TEAM The Blue and Blue Rifle Team, under the direction of Major Lannon, has concluded a satisfactory season. ■arious members have obtained their medals of ranking from the national association. The team lacked the proper amount of active competition, but those they did meet they handled very well. STUDENT COUNCIL The Student Council which represents the student body consists of 16 members, four from each class. Its purpose is to encourage, through mutual co-operation on the part of the boys and teachers, the welfare of the school. They have effected several changes of benefit to the school. The Council has carried on a successful year under the guidance of Mr. Frazier. THE LIBRARY CORPS The Library Corps, supervised by Miss Aline B. Colton, has efficiently completed another year. The members of the corps have had charge of the issuing of books, the care of the shelves and magazine rack, the filing of circulation and attendance slips, and various other tasks pertaining to the maintenance of the library system. The group has gladly rendered great service to the students of the school ; they deserve every bit of praise and credit. BAND The Band has lived up to its fine name. We may well be proud of the stirring music they have presented under the direction of Mr. Connell. May they continue to be the fine organization that they have always been in the past. The officers of the band are : Captain — Vincent J. Mauricci 1st Lieut. — John E. Gorman 2nd Lieut. — Robert D. McElaney ORCHESTRA The Orchestra has faithfully carried on under the direction of Mr. Rand. How fortunate are we to have such a fine musical unit in our scliool. They have been the means of entertainment at many outside functions during the past year. ' incent J. Mauricci is a capable concert leader. ASSEMBLIES The school bas heen honored in the past year by a number of distinguished guests, who have addressed the various assemblies. Robert L. ( " Believe It or Not " ) Ripley was a guest speaker. He related some of his inexhaustible adventures and " believe it or nots. " George Moriarty, umpire-in-chief of the American League, paid another visit to the school to give his talk on baseball. We were unfortunate not to have been able to sec his picture, " Play Ball. " Included among the graduates were Lieut.-Col. Paul Kirk, Commissioner of Public Safety; Lindsley B. Schell, ' 06, and Howard Norton, ' 01, of the English High School Association. Mr. Snow has also addressed the assemblies on two occasions. Major Driscoll also has ascended the platform. Mr. Ford has shown moving pictures. Of course, the politicians of the classes of ' 35 and ' 36 have told their respective assemblies why they should be elected. ENGLISH HIGH SCHOOL RECORD 73 ATHLETIC NOTES 1934-1935 By THOMAS A. SlANLAN, ' 35 As we glance back tliroiigh the pages of the records of the past year, we find once more that English High is consistently ranked with the leaders in athletic prowess. And we members of the student body take this opportunity to express our heartfelt thanks for our athletic supremacy of the past year and to offer our wishes for further continuance nf this prowess to Coach Ohrenberger, " the brains behind our athletic throne. " FOOTBALL Our " gridiron gladiators, " under the protecting wing of Capt. Al Alunichello, were " right in there " for the State title, until the traditional Turkey Day tilt with our ancient Purple Foe. The Blue and Blue entered the fray as heavy favorites, but a scrappy Latin School eleven that wouldn ' t give up, nosed them out, 13 — 12. in a scrap that will go down in the annals as one of the best schoolboy battles seen at the Fenway for many a day. TRACK True to traditions, the Blue and Blue plodders annexed another " Reggie " title under the inspiring leader- ship of Capt. Roger Battles, who had a very successful season in the 50-yard sprint. The shining star this year was Frank Zeimetz, who glittered against all dash competition in the B. A. A., Northeastern, State, Andover, and Regimental meets. He set new marks of 5 3 5 sees, in the Northeastern and Reggies. He equaled the State record in 5 3 5 sees. In a few words, the English High Track Sc|uad reigned supreme in the city. BASEBALL As these notes go to press, the Baseball Team is still in the process of organization, but in my humble opinion I think our " gems of the diamond " will come through in " true Blue and Blue " style. With a roster that has such veterans as Capt. Bill Murray, Al Munichello, " Bull " Falvey, Joe Ahearn, George Haynes, and " Fritza " Leahy nailing down the key positions, it is little wonder that Mentor Ohrenberger looks forward to city competition with a broad grin. We live to trounce Latin on the diamond, and here ' s hoping. E. H. S. EXHIBITION SQUAD Rear Row — William E. Purdy, Francis J. White, Joseph G. Beatrice, Paul G. Genaris. Front Row — Paul E.
