Dear 5tuden+s
The sp1r1t of Englewood has begun to emerge
very surely In thls our sophomore year, we have
TeCOgHlZe that we are a group wlth common wlshes,
and hopes We have surged forth w1th enthuslasm,
clumslly, llke true sophomores, we have made mlstakes, trlpped
over our own feet, and have blundered and blushed occaslonally
slowly but
begun to
lnterests
and perhaps
Even though we may not possess the SOPhlSt1C8tlOH and
polse of older, more establlshed schools, we feel aarm, and
at ourselves' Such potentlal we have such hopes' Just thlnk,
1n one short year, DSCOMIHS the second largest school 1n the
County, havlne our flFSt real varslty competltlon, undergolng
an accredltatlon study, new courses, lHSU1TGd teachers, and
lnterested parents, all dedlcated workers w1th vouth
These are happy, eventful, and busy days we must contlnually
StT1Ve to look beyond to our future Was lt dobert Brownlnv
who sald 'Ah, but a man's reach should exc ed h1s grasp, or what'
a Heaven forfn Let's reach alt, and show to the world that we
can llVe together morally, courageously, cooperatlvely, and most
of all happlly
human and happy with our progress. We have learned to laugh

These first year Latin students
have come a long way since last
September when they tackled
"America est patria mea." In order
to enioy Latin more, they have
spent the past year studying Roman
people and customs. Although
they could not find a market for
Roman bread with olive oil, they
were able to earn expenses for
attending the Latin Forum by sell-
ing baked goods and candy.

Every Tuesday morning, Englewood students gather in the west end of the cafe-
teria to attend the meeting of the Prayer Council. Sponsored by the Student Council
and led by Esther Owens, Student Council chaplain, this group has heard ministers
from all parts of Jacksonville. Everyone is pleased with the success ot the Prayer
Council and many take advantage of this good use of their spare time before school.

The C.B.E. group is one of Englewood's
newer organizations. Like the students
in D.C.T., they attend classes in the
morning and apply their skills on the
job in the afternoon. Althougth this
means a longer, harder day, they are
repaid by the knowledge that they will
be well prepared to take their places in
the business world.

imagine nine girls being able to keep the secret about
having a color picture in the annual! They said it couldn't
be done, and the staff doesn't mind saying how hard it was.
As if this weren't super-human enough, those same nine
girls Cwith the help of a very patient sponsorj put together
the rest of the annual without the loss of a single life.

The editorial staff: Maxine Szekelyi, Mari Wonicker, Martha Wonicker, Marian Wolking, and Anne Whitlow
These people were most often seen digging through stacks of paper looking for that certain note that they
weren't supposed to lose, glaring at a horizontal picture that was supposed to fit into a vertical space or lying
on the ground in a dead faint to find out that the deadline that they were sure to meet had already passed two
weeks before.

On January i9 and 20 at Hogan Spring Glen
School the Senior Class presented "The Curious Sav-
age" directed by Mr. Terry Rogers. Pearl Barnett
was the student director.
This being Englewood's first Senior Class Play,
the cast worked hard to make it a success. Much of
the credit goes to the back stage crew, because
without them the play could not have been presented.
Technical director for the play was Jon Hayes.
Pat Mercer was in charge of props and Pat Case
headed the make-up crew. Richard Heston handled
the lighting and sound effects, while Kathy Phillips
was head of the usherettes.
TOP: "We iust happened to be listening."

The Rams made themselves well known around
the city in their first varsity year. Having ended the
season with a 5-4-1 record, they brought praise and
respect from other coaches and sports writers alike.
After tying their first game, they lost the Homecom-
ing game by one point and then hit a four game
winning streak, the first of which was the upset vic-
tory over undefeated Terry Parker. The last game
was a disappointing loss to DuPont.
The excellent work of the coaches won them the
title, "Coaches of the Year."

The Basketball Team of Englewood
showed much improvement from last
year. At the first of the season they
were undefeated in three games and
it appeared they would go all the
way. Even though the team suffered
many of their setbacks by one and
two points, they kept up their spirit.
Due to their determination they gained
respect and even victories. They fin-
ished the season with a ll-l5-O re-
cord.
