As part of the modernization program at Bath Iron Works Corporation, Bath, Maine, a Navy Tactical Data System (NTDS) was installed to enable the ship to make decisions in countering high speed air threats. Left: The flag is raised and the first watch set. Below, Right: Commissioned once again on 26 June 1971, ENGLAND re-joins the U.S. Pacific Fleet as a modern ship of the line.

A PROUD NAME CARRIED FORWARD A proud name was carried forward, when, on 4 October 1960, the keel was laid for a 630-foot guided missile frigate in the Todd Shipyard Corporation, San Pedro, California, and designated USS DLG-22. This future addition to the U.S. Pacific Fleet was launched following ceremonies on 6 March 1962 at which Mrs. Clair Engle, wife of the Honorable Clair Engle, U.S. Senator of California, christened he the USS ENGLAND. COMMANDING OFFICER CAPTAIN JOSEPH J. PAULIS,JR. MARCH 1971-OCTOBER 1972 Joseph J. Paulis, Jr., graduated from Cornell University as an NROTC student and was commissioned an Ensign in February 1948. Captain Paulis has served in the following afloat commands since his commissioning: USS CONSOLATION (AH-15), USS CONWAY (DDE-507), Commanding Officer of LSM- 462, Commanding Offlcer of USS PENDER COUNTY (LST-1080), USS KEARSARGE (CVA-33), USS TOPEKA (CLG-8), Weapons Officer of USS COLUMBUS (CG-12), Commanding Officer of USS SHELTON (DD-790), Surface Warfare Officer on the Staff, Commander SIXTH Fleet, and Commander Destroyer Division THREE TWO TWO. Captain Paulis is married to the former Miss Laura Gay- dosh of Ithaca, New York, presently living in Coronado, California, and they have four children. Captain Paulis wears The Navy Commendation Medal, American Campaign Medal, WWII Victory Medal, China Service Medal, Navy Occupation Medal, National Defense Medal, Korean Service Medal with three stars. Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal for Vietnam, South Korean Presiden- tial Citation, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Ribbon, and the United Nations Service Medal.
