Outfitted with the most modem electronic and weapons equipment she can effectively deal with any threat on the high seas. Her extended range sonar facilitates early detection and engagement of hostile sub- marines should the need arise. Long range detection equipment coupled with an effective anti-aircraft missile system present a formidable threat to attacking aircraft. Her TERRIER missiles are capable of intercepting and destroying enemy planes many miles from their in- tended targets . USS ENGLAND (DE-635) The USS ENGLAND (DLG-22) is the second ship of the Fleet to bear the name. Both were named in honor of Ensign John Charles England, USNR, who was killed during the attack on Pearl Harbor while serving aboard the USS OKLAHOMA. The original USS ENGLAND (DE-635) amassed a brilliant war record unequalled in the annals of naval warfare. While on patrol in the South Pacific, this scrappy destroyer escort sank six enemy submarines in the last two weeks of May 1944, a record that no other naval vessel could ever hope to approach. For her gallantry in action, she was awarded the Presi- dential Unit Citation. The new ENGLAND was built by Todd Shipyard Corporation, San Pedro, California. She was commissioned on 7 December 1963 at Long Beach Naval Shipyard. Designated a guided missile frigate, she approaches the size of a light cruiser with a length of 533 feet, a beam of 54 feet, and a full load displacement of 7, 600 tons. Her crew consists of 21 officers and 350 enlisted men. She is powered with modem steam turbines and has a maximum speed of over 30 knots. Her air-conditioned messing and berthing spaces were designed with habit- ability in mind, making her one of the most comfortable ships in the navy .
