COMMANDING OFFICER CAPTAIN ROBERT HENRY EWING Captain Robert Henry E wing was born in Lockney, Texas on 17 February 1922. He grad- uated from the United States Naval Academy in June of 1944. His first tour of duty was aboard the USS SALT LAKE CITY (CA-25) as Gunnery Officer during the occupation of the Philippines, Iwo Jinia and Okinawa. He then served aboard the USS BREMERTON (CA-130) as Fire Control and Engineering Division Officer and the LST-1144 as First Lieutenant and Operations Officer. While on duty ashore Captain Ewing served as an instructor in Marine Engineering at the Naval Academy and as Combat Information Center Officer at the Fleet Training Center in Charleston, South Carolina. He then served as Executive Officer of the USS H. P. JONES (DD-427) and Commanding Officer of the USS ORIOLE (MHC-33) and USS WALDO COUNTY (LST-1163). Captain Ewing then served as Flag Lieutenant to Commander Naval Forces Japan followed by a tour of duty as Executive Officer of the USS R. E . KRAUS (DD-849). He then attended the Armed Forces Staff College in Norfolk, Virginia, served in the recruiting section of the Bureau of Naval Personnel and had command of the USS FOREST SHERMAN (DD-931). Captain Ewing comes to the USS ENGLAND (DLG-22) after attending the Industrial Col- lege of the Armed Forces in Washington, D.C. He is married to the former Elisabeth Hof- fert of Barney, North Dakota and has two children, Robert 12, and Linda 10, Captain Swing ' s family is currently residing in San Pedro, California.

EXECUTIVE OFFICER COMMANDER RANDALL WAYNE YOUNG Commander Randall Wayne Young was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana on 26 October 1924. After graduating from the Naval Academy in 1949, CDR Young served aboard the USS SOUTH- ERLAND (DDR- 743) in t he billets of First Lieutenant, ASW Officer, Communicator, and Navigator. The SOUTHERLAND operated in Korean waters. Transferring in 1951 to USS McCORD (DD-534), again operating in Korean waters, he served as Gunnery Officer, ASW Officer, and Navigator . After his two year tour of duty, CDR Young went to Brooklyn, New York, to take com- mand of the USS PC-1182. In July 1954, PC-1182 was transferred to the Chinese Nationalist Navy. After two years in Japan as ASW Training Officer, CDR Young attended the U.S . Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California. Graduating in May 1959 with a Master of Sci- ence degree in Electrical Engineering, he next took command of the USS PRIME (MSO-466). Reporting aboard USS ENGLAND (DLG-22) on 29 January 1966, CDR Young has served as Executive Officer and will be leaving shortly to take command of the USS SOMERS (DDG-34). He is married to the former Miss Shizuko Makino of Mamakura, Japan and has three children, Kumi Marianne, Tomi Randall, and Riki Gerard.
