AS MEMBERS OF B DIVISION, THEY ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE OPERATION AND MAINTEN- ANCE OF THE SHIP'S FOUR 1200 PSI BOILERS. THESE BOILERS BURN FUEL OIL TO HEAT WATER, PRODUCING STEAM. THE STEAM, WHEN CONVERT- ED INTO MECHANICAL ENERGY BY THE MAIN ENGINES, PROPELS THE SHIP. IN ADDITION, IT IS USED TO POWER THE GENERATORS AND CREATE ELECTRICITY, AS WELL AS THE DISTILLING PLANT, WHICH PROVIDED FRESH WATER. DURING REPLEN- ISHMENTS IT IS NOT UNUSUAL FOR THE SHIP TO TAKE ON SEVERAL HUNDRED THOUSAND GAL- LONS OF FUEL OIL TO FEED THE BOILERS.
