Murray Table Of Contents Seniors Faculty Underclassmen Activities Sports Advertising Preface It hardly seems possible that three years have passed since we entered Enfield High School. Through these years we have all grown, not only physically, but emotionally. Our school years have consisted of studying, as well as, new friendships and unforgettable memories. Now, as we start a new phase of our lives, let us look back fondly through these pages, at our years spent together. Then, look ahead with great anticipation for a bright future. Dedication The 1983 Yearbook Staff takes great pride in dedicating this year’s Echo to Mr. Newell Murri and Mrs. Barbara Kemnitzer, the two members of our art department. There was never a time when they were not there for us, encouraging us, and caring about us. Mr. Murri and Mrs. Kemnitzer have donated countless hours as well as great amounts of supplies to colorfully decorate our school for each holiday and major school function. They also have been instrumental in developing the artistic talents of students here at Enfield High School. Each year the art department enters the artwork of students in the Enfield Arts Festive!. These two teachers have organized field trips to major art museums in Boston and New York to encourage appreciation of art and to support the individual artistic talents of their students. iVe are all very grateful, Mr. Murri and Mrs. Kemnitzer for your generous giving of time and effort, and we hope that in some small way this dedication demonstrates to you our great appreciation for all your contributions to our class. We thank you for giving of yourselves so often and so freely. VJe owe it to ourselves to discover our own special talents. We each have a hero within us. We each have our own history worth preserving. While we’re young, We have to check out the cards we’ve been dealt And sort them out as best as we can. Making the most of the short lives we have. A part that can never be relived. A part that should never be forgotten. Part challenging, part rewarding Part friendly, and part crazy. Class President’s Message When we first entered our kindergarten classroom, graduation seemed an eternity away. Yet, as seniors It seems like yesterday that we packed our lunchboxes emd entered a room full of strangers. But graduation Is no longer just a dream; it is a reality within our reach. We must realize that graduation Is not an ending. It Is a beginning with new hopes, dreams, responsibilities and decisions. We will now open a new door, and 35 when we were in kindergarten there will be the same fears and doubts about what the future holds for us. What ever road each one of us decides to take in the future, there will be a contact with people and a need for friends. I feel Enfield High School has given us the ability to understand and make friends with many different people. In this way It has prepared us for the world outside of high school. Through our involvement and spirit in various activities, proms, class night, variety show, and homecomings, we have grown closer in our friendships. These friendships are now a living part of us as they Influence our lives everyday. As present of the class of nineteen hundred and eighty-three, 1 hope that the memories we all have shared gives us the strength to obtain all goals. As we open all doors to the future. The basic science curriculum of full year courses consists of: BIOLOGY, PHYSICAL SCIENCE, CHEMISTRY, ANATOMY and PHYSIOLOGY, and PHYSICS. More comprehensive studies in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics are also offered as full year courses: ADVANCED CHEMISTRY, ADVANCED BIOLOGY, and ADVANCED PHYSICS. In addition, the Science Department offers semester courses in the follow- ing areas: ECOLOGY, BOTANY, ASTRONOMY I, ASTRONOMY II, and HEALTH. Independent study is made available upon request for those students who have specific needs not met by the established curriculum. VJe, the staff of the Science Department of Enfield High School, wish to offer our congratulations and best wishes to this year’s graduating class. 78 Social Science The 1982-1983 school year was one of continual attempts to provide avenues for self-realization and self- fulfillment for students in Social Science classes. The Social Science curriculum has been designed to provide choices, to increase the possibility for students to make some meaningful contact with society, to identify and understand complexities in today’s world, and to formu- late responsible value systems for life in a diverse world. It is our hope that students will select courses careful- ly and participate fully in the activities of each class. Department Chairperson Mr. Richard Gray A ' I 80 Foreign Language Department Chairperson Mrs. Sandra Brassard The Foreign Language Department at EHS has con- tinually encouraged students to study a foreign language not only to extend their knowledge of other cultures, but also to improve their potential in the world of work. In addition, the Foreign Language Department feels that learning other languages helps one understand and use his own language more accurately and effectively. French, German, and Spanish are taught in an ap- proach that is audio-visual with emphasis on the sounds of grammar patterns of the spoken language. Latin is also presented in a dynamic manner with audio-visual materials that help the student to develop a better cul- tural understanding of classical antiquity and its implica- tions in the present. Mathematics Mrs. Rachele Lorenson Mr. Stanley Tupek Mr. Robert Bromage Mr. Michael Austin QwAltt Mr. Mark Dennis i J. ' Mrs. Marilyn Scheck 85 : In recognition of the vital roles that mathematics a nd computers play in our lives, the Enfield High School Mathematics Department offers a varied and extensive program of studies. The offerings range from practical courses for those students who desire proficiency in basic skill areas to theoretical courses for those who will pursue the study of mathematics and computers beyond high school. It is hoped that the students of the 1983 graduating class have gained an understanding of the relevance of mathematics and computers to everyday experiences, and will pursue their studies to the highest level of their abilities. 1 82 Business The Business Department offers a variety of courses for skill development and socio-economic subjects that provide training in office and business related occupa- tions. On-the-job training opportunities are available in the fields of office and distributive occupations. Many courses also serve as a background for advanced study. In addition, a large collection of paper- backs for leisure reading is available. 84 Guidance I Ms. Rae Tober Mr. William Wenzel Department Chairperson R. Pratt Prunty Mr. Raymond Cloutier The Guidance Department, in concert with the other disciplines (departments) at Enfield High School, stress- es the acquisition of skills and the development of habits concerning self analysis, decision making, inquiry learn- ing and academic and perspective analysis planning. Our main goal is to guide the students in examining their abilities, capabilities, interests, attitudes, habits, and volitions. VJe must specifically focus on the student’s approach to life and a life of learning through job career and college identification, understanding and pursuit. VJe have expansive resources available to the students in these areas. I 85 Industrial The program in Industrial Education offers students an opportunity to explore and become acclimated to modern techniques. Program offerings are: Home Me- chanics, Automotives, Electricity, Technical Drawing, Machine Drafting, Architectural Drawing, Material Pro- cessing, Wood Technology, Metal Technology, Graphic Arts, and House Design. Education 86 Family Living Regardless of ethnic and economic backgrounds, we all share certain commonalities; we are all part of a family, and we are all consumers. However, many indivi- duals do not have an opportunity to understand or develop the skills necessary to deal with problems relat- ed to ourselves, our families, and society in general. The department of Family Living and Consumer Education focuses upon the individual and seeks to develop self- awareness through a variety of courses dealing with many aspects of our personal and social lives. Offerings include Independent Living, Family and So- ciety, Exploring Parenthood, and Interior Design, as well as courses in the areas of food and clothing. Under the direction of Mr. John Gionfriddo, the in- strumental music department offers a wide variety of performing opportunities. Courses include Marching Band, Concert Band, Jazz Ensemble, and several small chamber ensembles. These groups perform throughout the school year and have represented our town and school both in and out of the state. The classroom curriculum is aimed to accommodate three different kinds of students; the general student, who may include the History of American Music or Electronic Music in his studies; the college bound liberal arts and elementary education majors; and the advance music majors, who would study music theory and com- position under the capable guidance of Mr. Leonard DeMaio. Mr. Rocco Autorino, an accomplished vocalist in his own right, is in the director’s chair when our mixed and select choruses take to the risers for a performance. The vocal class which he conducts helps the student gain confidence in his solo work, improve his vocal tech- nique, and realize the potential of his own voice. Music 88 This was a dynamic year in the Art Department. The students were provided with the opportunities to ac- quire basic skills as well as difficult concepts. This en- abled all individuals to exercise their creative abilities. Student art work was continuously on exhibit through- out the building for the pleasure of the entire student body and staff. This has been a good year for field trips and guest speakers as well. We know that this year filled with change and chal- lenge has helped the students of Enfield High School to grow and develop their self-expression. We will miss those of you who are leaving us and hope you will carry fond memories of our Art Department. 89 Physical In an attempt to meet the changing needs and inter- ests of students, the Physical Education Department offers a wide variety of activities. These activities include many individual and team sports. Tenth grade students participate in a structured pro- gram which includes both team and individual sports with emphasis on fundamentals and knowledge to pre- pare them for selection of activities as juniors and sen- iors. Juniors and seniors are required to take physical edu- cation and also have the opportunity to select from a wide range of activities that are offered. The emphasis at this level will be to further acquaint students with numer- ous activities and to help define their skills for a lifetime of physical activity.
