This Laugh’s On Us Preface As our high school years draw to a close, we, the class of 1982, will move on to face new challenges in an ever-changing world. In these past years, we have each grown into indivi- duals with different ideas and goals. We have learned to do things our own way, to be our own person, thus gaining the confidence we need to meet such challenges. Now we can look ahead — seeking tomor- row, and anticipating all that we might become. Let us realize as we do, that the future will be what we will make of it. Contents Preface 2 Dedication 3 Seniors 11 Faculty 63 Underclassmen 83 Activities 109 Sports 149 Advertising 179 Dedication A dedication is a testimony of respect, admira- tion and affection. At Enfield High, the yearbook staff carefully chooses the person on whom they bestow this honor. The 1982 staff takes great pride in dedicating our book to Mr. Paul Pavlakis. Mr. Pavlakis was always there when we needed him — always caring, always listening, always guiding. He encouraged each one of us to reach our highest potential. We are very grateful for all the time and energy that he spent with us as our junior prom advisor. Many times it may have seemed as though his hard work was unacknowledged, but it was never unap- preciated. And so, this dedication is meant to say, “thank you”, for doing a job that will never re- ceive enough gratitude. 3 We re gonna make our dreams come true!! b We re gonna do it!! On your mark, get set, and go now And well do it our way, yes, our way Make all our dreams come true — 1 y 1 SENIORS t Class Officers Class President Valerie Farrell As graduation approaches, we look back with fondness on the good times and memories that our class has shared. We remember the administrators and faculty who gave of themselves in order to make our events possible. Also, we remember the close ties and the friendships we have established as we repeatedly wrapped wire and tissue to create the carnations for our float, as we reflected on ourselves with some sarcasm, a great deal of affection and mostly humor on class night and as we displayed our talents at the variety show. However, time dims the memory. As years go by we may forget names, dates and events, but the friendships that we have shared and the experiences we have enjoyed as a class have helped us gain a better perspective on life and a better understanding of others. This is what we will take with us. For me personally, it has been an honor representing the class of ’82. I wish for you, my fellow classmates, that you may always reach, always climb, always strive toward your goal, and most of all, may you find the path to success. Latin is also presented in a dynamic manner with audio-visual materials that help the student develop a better cultural understanding of classical antiquity and its implications in the present. 73 Social Science The 1981-82 school year was one of continual attempts to provide avenues for self-realization and self-fulfillment for students in Social Sci- ence class. The social science curriculum has been designed to provide choices, to increase the possibility for students to make some meaningful contact with society, to identify and understand complexities in today’s world, and to formulate responsible value systems for life in a diverse world. Mr. Edward Mastzal Mr. Kenneth St, Wood Mr. Michael DeRose Mr. Richard Mazur Mrs. Deborah Solomon Mr. Robert Kramer Science As a result of increasing number of students electing to take science offerings and because of the continual importance of scientific knowledge in today’s society, the Science Department of Enfield High School realizes the value of the established curriculum and continues to offer the following wide range of subjects. ' " ' t Mr. Newell Murrl r’ 78 Music Mr. Rocco Autorino Under the direction of Mr. John Gionfriddo, the instrumented music department offers a wide variety of performing opportunities. Courses include Marching Band, Concert Band, Jazz Ensemble, and several small chamber ensembles. These groups perform throughout the school year and have represented our town and school both in and out of the state. The classroom curriculum is aimed to accommodate three different kinds of students; the general student, who may include the History of American Music or Electronic Music in his studies; the college bound liberal arts and elementary education majors; and the advance music majors, who would study music theory and composition under the capable guidance of Mr. Leonard DeMaio. Mr. Rocco Autorino, an accomplished vocalist in his own right, is in the director’s chair when our mixed and select choruses take to the risers for a performance. The vocal class which he conducts helps the students gain confidence in his solo work, improve his vocal technique, and realize the potential of his own voice. This year’s team was very inexperienced as they Jad only two starters returning from last year’s squad. Also, it was Coach ■enny Shortz’ first year at the helm after coaching Junior Varsity for veral seasons. Co-Captain Steve Ouellette returned to goal again this •t’ar for his third straight season. Jim Malley, Kevin Foxe, Frank Horvath, eve Chaput. and Steve Casey applied the offensive attack for the S aiders. Co-Captain Mike Francolini, Jeff Angellica, Mike Baer, and Kyle dway controlled the midfield, as defensive men Chris Strom, Paul Smith, Jam Porcello, Chris Dickman. Phil Pion, Pete Wakelin, and Mark Boucher i unded out the team. The team’s overall record was 1-13-1. This record Jaes not reflect the team’s effort or spirit as they defeated Fermi in a Bugh game by the score of 2-1. Three juniors, and nine sopho- mores were also an integral part of the team. It is the best cross country season Enfield has had in about a decade. The team’s success was due primarily to the strong efforts of front runners Steve and Russ Chesworth, Mark Ranta and Eric Bou- dreau. The remainder of the team also worked hard and made the important contributions necessary for a good season. The man who is really responsible for the team’s accomplishments is Coach Gary Blanchette. Although this was only his second year coaching at Enfield, his knowledge and wisdom extend far beyond the expected. He established the team’s high morale and good spirits, and made it a com- petitive group. Backing the coach in leadership were Captains Dave Arruda, Eric Boudreau. Tom Burnham, and Mark Ranta. The only low point in the season was the defeat to the Falcons. The loss was avenged, however, at the CCIL Meet, when the Raiders beat Fermi by a wide margin. The top runner for Enfield. Russ Chesworth, made States by placing in the top twenty-five. Overall it was a glorious season for the Cross Country Team. 158 159 Captain Dave Arruda Captain Tom Burnham Captain Eric Boudreau Captain Mark Ranta Mark Owens Ray Lempitsky Front row, left to right: Captain Margaret Dougan and Captain Mary Keller. Enfield had a very young team this season captained by Seniors Marga- ret Dougan and Mary Keller. The disappointing 2 and 9 record was somewhat redeemed in the last dual meet. Enfield soundly thumped cross-town rival, Fermi, for the third consecutive year. The team record was the only disappointing part of the season. Individ- ual performances provided some real bright spots. Co-captain Margaret Dougan will graduate with a bundle of individual marks, Margaret swam the 50 freestyle, 200 freestyle, 500 freestyle and 100 butterfly in record setting time. She also finished eighth in the L Division Championships. Second year swimmer Patrice McKiernan also set a new record in the 200 IM and is still holder of the 100 backstroke record. This year’s Varsity Basketball team suffered a very disappointing sea- son. The team was extremely inexperienced, as only one starter returned from last year’s team. Co-Captain Steve Ouellette returned for his second season at starting forward for the Raiders, while Co-Captain Mike Mgrdi- chian started at forward and guard in his first year on Varsity. Seniors Len Guerriero and Chris Scarfo shared point guard duties and Senior Rick Maier added additional strength at foward. Juniors Kevin Curry and Mike Baer rounded out the team as Sophomore Pete Moore contributed greatly to the team in his first year. Although the team suffered many defeats, everyone worked hard and gave it their best.
