JiV» Enfield High School Enfield, Connecticut Nineteen Hundred And Eighty-One Echo ui% i As our years in high school come to a close, we should not be looking back at what we are losing, but looking forward to the new lives we are about to commence. The world holds so much for us to seek out, learn, and experience. We relinquish too much when we leave challenges untried. We lose if we give up before we even begin. The future is only what we make it to be. And now is the time for us to begin building that future. Brenda J. Richards There are certain qualities one seeks in the selection of someone for a dedication. This per- son must possess special attributes which elicits a sense of high regard from others, and reflect ideals for which we all strive. Miss Anna Parakilas is one who possesses such qualities. She has served the education community in many ways throughout the years: as the Secretary of the Superintendent of Schools, as teacher at the Northampton Commu- nity College, as a teacher in Turkey, and in our own school for 20 years. She is well known for her kindness, generosity, and the deep concern she shows for others. Very often she gives up her spare time for the sake of helping others. And so, because of our high regard for you and because of the high ideals you reflect, we the class of 81, dedicate our yearbook to you. Dedication 1. 5ENIDR5 -4 During the three years that we have spent in Enfield High, one thing has become clear, that we all need friends. Though many of us will leave our friends behind to go on to pursue our different goals in life, we must look back at our high school memories and cherish them. For never again will we be able to experience the many humorus and worthwhile things that we, the class of nineteen eighty-one, have done together: homecomings, pep rallies, junior proms and senior proms, and the class pride that we displayed at the Senior Variety Show and on Class Night. 1 hope that the class of 81 leaves E.H.S. as better friends, with a better understanding of how important friendship is. These offerings range from practical mathematics for those who desire proficiency in basic skill areas to theoretical courses for those who will pursue mathematics beyond high school. It is hoped that the students of the 1981 graduating class have gained an understanding of the basic interrelationship of mathematics and an awareness of its relevance to everyday experience, and will pursue the study of mathematics to the highest level of their ability. Left to right: Mr. Stephen Smith, Mr. Stanley Tupek, Department Chairperson Ms. Barbara Flebotte, Mr. Eugene Scheck, Mrs. Mari- lyn Scheck, Mrs. Rachele Lorenson, Mr. Raymond LaFlamme, Mr. Michael Austin and Mr. Robert Bromage. 74 As a result of increasing number of students electing to take science offerings and because of the continual importance of scienti- fic knowledge in today ' s society, the Science Department of Enfield High School realizes the value of the established curriculum and continues to offer the following wide range of subjects. Captains Bill Teed, Lou Bachetti, Craig Newsam, and Bart Guistina led the team to a record of 13 • 2. A tremendous display of goal tending was exhibited by Junior Steve Ouellette, who was respon- sible for 1 1 shutouts. The backfield, consisting of Jim Lacey, Brian Smith, and Chris Massey, worked well together to execute a strong defense. The “bread and butter” of the team, Craig Newsam and Bart Guistina, controlled the midfield, as Mike Francolini, Jay Rhodes, and “Hatchet Man” Mark Wilcox provided for the left side. Val Kropiwinicki, despite his injuries, fulfilled his responsibilities on defense. The dynamic duo of Bill Teed and Lou Bachetti, along with speed- sters Rick Canino, Mark Pion, and George McDon- ough, provided a strong offensive attack for the Raid- ers. This significant victory turned the tables from a would-be disappointing season to a rewarding one. The players were encouraged by the rowdiest pep rally in Enfield High School history. Coach Bacewicz helped to psych up the Raider fans when he asked them to pull togeth- er and support their team. Each member of the team is to be congratulated for his hard work and dedication. It should be mentioned that the support of the entire school made the players realize that everyone was behind them, and they came through. In compiling a 5-6 record and sneaking six individual marks along with two relay records, the team ended the season on a triumphant note by soundly defeating arch rival Fermi. A shot in the arm was given to the program when the Board of Education allowed freshmen to swim with the team for the first time. But the real strength and leadership of the team came from the six graduating seniors: Cocaptains Lisa Oneto and Paula Kweder, Sue Krajewski, Joanne McGowan, Beth Micewicz, and Lynn Kask. Among them, they own half of the records set this season. Along with the best regular season ever, the team also placed the most swimmers in post season competition, thus far. Ten swimmers journeyed to the Divisional Championships. No account of an athletic season would be complete without mentioning the friendships that were made during the season, for they are very close and permanent ones. They make each season all the more special. Current relay record holders are Patrice McKiernan, Lisa Oneto, Margaret Dougan, and Beth Nicewicz in the 200 Medley Relay, and in the 400 Freestyle Relay, Paula Kweder, Margaret Dougan, Beth Nicewicz, Sue Krajewski, and Mary Keller. Individual marks were set by Paula Kweder in the 200 and 500 Freestyle, Lisa Oneto in the 100 Breastroke, Margaret Dougan in the 100 Butterfly and 200 Individual Medley, and Patrice McKiernan in the 100 Backstroke. Cheerleading The winter season’s Cheerleading Squad consisted of Captain Debbie Bousquet, Co-Captain Dierdre Moo- ney, Co-Captain Megan Flynn, Trayce Curry, Donna Gill, and Janice Hitchcock. After the yearbook pic- tures were taken, the team picked up seven new mem- bers. These girls deserve credit for a adding much to the squad’s spirit. The late arrivals are Beth Thomp- son, Mary Keller, Jody Pelligrino, Karen Bosworth, Danette Hogan, Sue DeMur, and Julie Martocchio. The cheerleaders stayed behind the teams 100%. They helped to involved the crowd, and to give the support that Enfield High Sports are well worthy of. Boys ' Basketball This year’s Varsity Basketball Team was led by senior captains Jeff Wheeler, Jeff Maier, and Lou Ba- chetti. All of the captains have been starting with the team for three years. Senior Dave Morton and junior Steve Ouellette were also valuable starters for the Raiders. The depth of the team was supplied by sen- iors Mike Gokey, Sam Bridges, and Scott Sweeney. As leading scorer for three years, Jeff Wheeler has a chance to make Enfield High School history and along with Jeff Maier, become candidates for the C.C.l.L. All League Team. An added highlight for this year was participating in the York, Maine High School Pre-season Tournament. Enfield finished second in the finals to York High School. This year’s squad was a talented one. Though the seven graduating seniors will be missed. Coach Bro- mage has a positive outlook for the seasons to come. Captains Jeff Maier. Ice Hockey The Hockey Team had a very successful season this year. With a strong offensive and defensive team, the Raiders placed many members in the area’s top scoring standings. Nine of eleven seniors have been a part of the team since their sophomore year. Seniors Duane Cirillo, Captain Chris Chaput, Ron Scavotto, Gordie Massey, Chris Massey, Captain George McDon- ough, Captain Mark Peucker, Tom Grigely, Rich Ho- gan, Steve Meunier, and Jim Tinnerella were responsi- ble for most of the success that made this year En- field’s second best over all. Girls ' Basketball Though four months of hard work and dedication didn ' t promise the team a top spot in the CCIL, it did prove to be a winning season in all of girls ' hearts. Throughout many hours of practice and game work, every girl improved on both an individual and a team level. The three upperclassmen. Captain Maura Coughlin, Paula Kweder, and Tammy Daniels, managed to prove their seniority by helping sophomores Anne Keyes, Stephanie Wheeler, and Maureen Haley, and junior Judy Kaffeian give that 1 10%, which is a special quality of every Enfield Raider. The girls extra efforts made them winners when they came back to beat Fermi 38-37, after being down by ten points at the halfway mark of the game. Not only did the extra efforts make them stars on the court, but also in the hearts of each other, as good friends and fellow players. This is something that will always be cherished by all the girls Captain Maura Coughlin and Coach " Cookie” Bromage. ■■ 1 « M 9vr-- m Stephanie Wheeler Captain Maura Coughlin Judy Kaffeian Tammy Daniels Maureen Haley 171 Front row: left to right: Mike Irish, Matt Czarnecki, Gary Quint, Captain John Lipinski, and Cliff Thorstenson. Boys Swimming A group of seniors and some talented underclass- men, including freshmen, put together the strongest boys’ swim team Enfield High has had. Most of the season turned out to be close, but not quite close enough. As of this date, February 2, 1981, the season is less than a winning one (2-5), with three meets remaining. Captain John Lipinski, Senior Matt Czar- necki, and Senior Cliff Thorstenson were strong assets to the season. The team suffered some bad breaks in losing their senior sprinter, Mike Irish, to an injured finger, along with four or five other swimmers. It should be mentioned that the entire team improved their skills a great deal, this provides Coach Fenton with a very optimistic outlook on the seasons to come. Wrestling At this writing, the wrestling team has a record of five wins and two losses. In the Somers Invitational Christmas Tournament, Enfield captured the team championship, ahead of Fermi, Rockville, and host Somers. Todd Sidway, Marty Green, John Ciem- niewski, and Captain Paul Russell placed first in their weight classes, while Ed Sousa, Tim Kissell, Dave Beaupre, Doug Wilby, and Art Dickman placed sec- ond. Finishing third for the Raiders were Eric Martin, and Mike DuBois. With six meets remaining the team is led by the following wrestlers, who have attained impressive records: Seniors; Paul Russell 6-1, John Ciemniewski 4-0, and Doug Wilby. Juniors; Todd Sid- way 6-1, and Dave Beaupre 5-2. Sophomores; Marty Green 6-1, and Tim Kissell 6-1. The Enfield High Wres- tling Team looks toward the remainder of the season with cautious optimism.
