Text from Pages 1 - 208 of the 1980 volume:

The parting glance, given fleetingly over the shoulder, is known to create the most enduring impression. We, the class of 1980, now find ourselves taking one final look at this institution and the significance of the years spent here. Once outside looking in, perhaps then we will be able to reflect objectively and with less distortion. What will we see ? If the future is truly a mirror of the past, it will reflect the efforts and aspirations of our present: in retrospect, it will reveal a multi- faceted experience which, when taken as a whole, is shown in its true light. It can only be in such a light that we, the class of 1980, will be able to reflect with appreciation upon this part of our lives. DEDICATION We the graduating class of 1980 dedicate our yearbook to Mr. Robert Fenton, because of the infinite time and effort he has devoted to Enfield High School students. A 1967 graduate of Enfield High School, Mr. Fenton continued his interest in our school when he returned to the boys ' and girls ' swim teams and to teach in the Enfield School System. His interest and concern for students has reached beyond the duties of merely coaching them as a team and teaching them as a class. He has taken a personal interest in their lives which has been appreciated by many. Even in our senior year, he helped us prepare our senior class trip to Florida and chaperoned that trip. We dedicate our yearbook as an expression of our appreciation to him. Thank-you, Mr. Fenton. The Class of 1980 6 I ' m tired of hearing how I ' ll miss my high school days though it seems the thing to say , now that they ' re ending . . . I don ' t know. It seems to me the ending merely signifies the beginning therefore, why the sense of loss ? to admit it. Perhaps it is the security which we ' re meant to miss; we are disrupting a pattern, which (although trying at times) has become a facile one to follow comfortable, whether or not we choose i- " : It is this pattern which we take for granted we have become too accustomed to familiar faces familiar situations. Real Life isn ' t like this . . . and as our lives grow increasingly complicated with each new option and responsibility; as each new found freedom must be paid for accordingly , it is then that we will look again and realize just how effortless the pattern was to follow , and how extremely difficult to break. My three years, here at Enfield High School, have been not only enjoy- able ones but also memorable ones. In 1977, when we entered Enfield High, many of us were acquaintances but as the years went on, we became friends. I recall the many happy times we shared and because of those times I have been able not only to understand other people better, but myself as well. After graduation day, many of us will be following different roads to happiness. I only hope that someday those roads will unite us again for I am sure our friendships will be lasting. It has been an honor representing the Class of 1980. I leave you, my fellow graduates, with the hope that you will reach your highest goals. I wish you luck and success in the future. The Foreign Language Department at EHS has continually encouraged students to study a foreign lan- guage not only to expand their knowledge of other cultures, but also to improve their potential in the world of work. French, German and Spanish are taught in an approach that is audio-visual with emphasis on the sounds and grammer patterns of the spoken language. Latin is also presented in a dynamic manner with audio-visual materials that help the student develop a better culture understanding of classical antiquity and its implica- tions in the present. SOCIAL The 1979-1980 school year was one of continual attempts to provide avenues for self-realization and self-fulfillment for students in Social Science class. The social science curriculum has been designed to provide choices for students. It is hopeful that such choices increase the possibility for students to make some meaningful contact with society, to identify and understand complexities in today ' s world, and to formulate responsible value systems for life in a diverse world. With most of the team returning next year, they are hoping for a successful sea- son, both on and off the field, as teammates and friends. r r r r r r r=Jr=ir=Jr=Jr=Jr=Jr= r=Jp=ir=Jr=Jf==Jf=Jr=Jr=Jr=Jr==Jr=Jr=Jr=Jr=Jr=Jr=Jf=Jr=Jr=Jr=Jr=Jr=Jr=Jr=ir=Jr==JF=ur=Jr==Jr==Jf=Ji 150 Enfield ' s Swim Team enjoyed a very good season this year, ending with a 4-9 record. Led by Seniors Doreen McKiernan, Lori Reardon, Sue Jennie, Kim Hitchcock, and Robin Mergan- dahl, Juniors Lisa Oneto, and Paula Kweder, and Sophomore Margaret Dougan, the Raider swimmers finned their way to many school records and show much promise for next year. The Volleyball Team ' s record of 2-16 does not give the play- ers much to show for the hard work and determination that went into this season. Led by Seniors Sue Downs, Tracey Daniels, Kathy Arrowsmith, and Karen Guimond the Raider ath- letes never gave up throughout the season. Evidence of this showed when Enfield nearly upset league champ Windham. Good Luck to all those Seniors who are leaving, and thanks for a fine effort. Second row: Coach Ed Provencher, Maurice Keane, Co-Captain Joe Wojtas, and Matt Patsky. The season for Cross-Coun- try events was an improvement over last year. The team ran close in many meets, but failed to come up a winner in any. A new coach and a majority of novice runners picked up needed experience for future success. Joe Wojtas and Neil Begley co-captained the Raider Team. Joe, an accomplished runner, was number one for the team in every meet. He also ran mar- athons and recently participat- ed in the Rhode Island 26 mile event. Neil Begley and Chris McNamara, senior runners were the number two and three men respectively. Showing improvement dur- ing the 79 season were Juniors John Lipinski, Mike Irish, Matt Patsky and Maurice Keane. Sophomore Dan Devine shows promise as a first year runner. These athletes will lead next year ' s team. 156 iUiUUir- ' .wul 1: i. . This year the Enfield Raider Football Team finished with a 1-9 record. This record does not do justice to all the hard work that went into the season. The team had high hopes after they beat Windsor. Their hopes were short lived when injuries, sickness, and penalties marred the team. Led by Seniors Dale Scoville, Stephen Peucker, and Brian Wilcox, and Juniors Dave Morton, Mike Fusco, and Pat Olschafskie, the Raider grid- ders never gave up although at times, they were being severely beaten. It ' s too bad the seniors have to leave with a losing re- cord, but the returning players will be looking forward to a good season next year. r= J r= J f= J r - | r= J f J r=Jr=Jr=J(=Jr=J[=Jf=Jr=Jf=Jr=Jf=Jr=Jf=Jr=Jr=Jr=Jr r=Uf=Jr=Jr=Jp=Jf=Jf=Jr Jf=Jf=Jr=ir=Jr=Jf=UF=Ji 158 Stephen Peucker Dale Scoville Andy Morris Dave Morton Dave Loughrey Art Latulippe Kevin Caminiti Brian Wilcox Ray Desroches Front row, left to right: Barb Levesque, Debbie Bousquet, Co-Captain Lisa Taksar, Co-Captain Cathy Leroux, Ronda Mergendahl and Christine Gonsorowski. The Swim Team had a disap- pointing season this year. This fact can be attributed to the size of the team, only 13 mem- bers, almost all being inexperi- enced, with only 4 returning members. These include, Sen- ior Captains, Fran Costanzo and Gary Sredzienski, and Juniors, John Lipinski and Gary Quint. Next year those returning can look forward to a more suc- cessful season, with the loss of only the two captains. Con- gratulations should be given to the members of the team who stuck with it from the start of the season to the finish. V The Raider ' s Varsity Hockey Team has shown great effort and teamwork by capturing the CCIL league title. The team led by Senior Tri-Captains Bob Hughes, Stephen Peucker and Wayne Warburton were in the first place slot throughout the season. Other Seniors Wayne Gegenheimer, Kevin Theriault, Matt Janney, Mark Patsky, Steve Kuraska, and Rick Miller contributed to the team ' s great success. Bob Hughes and Ste- phen Peucker, the area ' s top scorers, teamed up with Kevin Theriault to lead the area with the highest scoring line. Coach Phil Clarkin was pleased with this year ' s fine performance and hopes that the returning lettermen will lead the team to another successful season next year. ■ 1 f= J r= J r=Jr=Jr=Jr=Jr= | r=Jr= J r=Jr=Jr=Jr=T J r J r : .. ; ». •« • ' ♦» • SOCCER Kneeling, left to right: Co-Captains Kevin Zukowski, and Ed Tersavich. Enfield ' s 1979 Varsity Soccer Team experienced an eventful season finishing with a record of 7-7-3. The team was inexpe- rienced with only one starting senior returning. The remain- ing team was comprised of tal- ented seniors and juniors. Plac- ing sixth in a highly competitive CCIL league, a .500 record earned the Raiders a tourna- ment berth. They advanced in the tournament by beating West Haven 3-0, but their ef- forts were in vain as they fell to Hall in second round action, 7- 2. The team showed outstand- ing effort throughout the sea- son. Next year ' s Raider team will be looking forward to an exciting season and will be re- turning for action. The 1979-80 Varsity Basket- ball team experienced a very promising season. The Raiders worked very well together. A big victory over Fermi, who was in first place at the time, was an uplifting point of the season. Tough losses were also a part of the season. Losing two games by only one basket would seem to put most teams into a slump, but not the Raiders. They bounced right back. Beating Fermi was proof of the fact Raider Pride never dies. The team was led by Co-Captains Senior, Mike Maier, and Junior, Jeff Wheeler. Senior, Steve Cerrato and Juniors, Jeff Maier, Sam Bridges, Lou Bachetti, and Dave Morton contributed all their efforts. Only losing two players to graduation, next year ' s team will be looking for- ward to an exciting season. The Enfield High School Girls ' Basketball team devoted many hours practicing their of- fensive and defensive strate- gies, working the fast breaks, and perfecting their foul shoot- ing. Ball handling skills and en- durance building enabled the team to be ready to face the challenge of their eighteen game season. Many other fac- tors go into the art of playing basketball. Confidence, deter- mination, incentive, pride, cooperation, persistence and team effort are the building blocks of a well organized and stable team. Encouragement and willingness projected by Coach Kathleen Bromage gave the team superior guidance. The girls were fine representa- tives of Enfield High School and never showed a lack of spirit or drive in any of their games. Third row: Kyle Martin, Carl Albert, Mike Dubois, Eric Martin and Paul Led by Coach Kirk Parker, the Enfield Wrestling Team grappled with some of the toughest teams in the area. Al- though they failed to match last year ' s state champion perfor- mance, there were some indi- vidual standouts. Senior Co- captains Norm Boulanger and Mark Chamberlain held the team together with outstand- ing efforts. Possibly the greatest hindrance to the team was the lack of wrestlers to fill the twelve weight classes. More than once, the team had to for- feit a weight class or classes causing a loss of valuable points. Departing Seniors are Kyle Martin, Rich Jute, Rick Frechette, Neil Begley, Mark Chamberlain, Norm Boulanger, and John Giordano. On the whole we can be proud of this Raider team and give them our support as they did for our school in represent- ing us in their interscholastic encounters. 177 Dorothy Rose Wayne Brad — 4 ' - if-iTi -- - £ JB ' rv I N i! ;i PATRONS Mr. Mrs. Quay Grove Mr. Mrs. Thomas J.
