Jk Mary Elled H SJC- i .• Dedication Anyone who knows Mr. Mark Winzler sees a de- voted and unselfish educator and friend. One can always find him working on some type of school oriented project or organization. Whether he is involved in Student Council, Ger- man Exchange, Senior Variety Show, or Home- coming, Mr. Winzler’s energy seems untiring. De- spite his numerous activites he willingly becomes involved in new student endeavors. In appreciation for all that he has done for us, we, the Class of 1978, dedicate our yearbook to him as a way of saying: “Danke Schon, Herr Winz!” Because we are friends there is no value that can be placed on our friendship ... it cannot be measured. A friendship like ours could never be bought with money ... or even 6 promises. To me, it’s a treasure in itself. I’m so thankful for our feelings of closeness ... of personal regard and respect. I’m glad for the experiences we’ve shared, for the times we’ve spent together . . . learning and growing . . . and then sharing what we’ve learned with the world. Our friendship will always be one of the truly special parts of my life. And while I don’t say this everyday, maybe that’s good .... 13 Because if I said it everyday, it wouldn’t mean as much as it does in moments like this .... The 1977-1978 school year was one of continual attempts to provide avenues for self-realization and self-fulfillment for stu- dents in Social Science classes. The Social Science curriculum has been designed to provide choices for students. It is hopeful that such choices increase the possibility for students to make some meaningful contact with society, to identify and under- The Business Department’s curriculum offers comprehensive training in basic skills needed for office and business related occupations. By continual evaluation of curriculum and constant search for variety of material, the English Department seeks to respond to the needs of Enfield High School students. It is our hope that through thoughtful selection of courses and by active involvement in them, each student can enjoy increased competence in handling language and a growing knowledge of self. The Foreign Language Department at Enfield High School has continually encouraged students to study a foreign lan- guage not only to expand their knowledge of other cultures, but also to improve their potential in the world of work. French, German and Spanish are taught in an approach that is audio-visual with emphasis on the sounds and gram- mar patterns of the spoken language. Latin is also presented in a dynamic manner with audio-visual materials that help the student develop a better cultural understanding of classi- cal antiquity and its implications in the present. Regardless of ethnic and economic backgrounds, we all share certain commonalities; we all are a part of a family, and we are all consumers. However, many individuals do not have an opportunity to understand or to develop the skills necessary to deal with problems related to ourselves, our fam- ilies and society in general. Family Living and Consumer Education focus upon the individual and seeks to develop self-awareness through a variety of courses dealing with many aspects of our personal and social lives. These activities include many individual and team sports. Tenth grade students participate in a structured program which includes both team and individual sports with empha- sis on fundamentals and knowledge to prepare them for a se- lection of activities as juniors and seniors. Seniors and juniors are required to take physical education and also have the opportunity to select from a wide range of activities that are offered. The emphasis at this level will be to further acquaint students with numerous activities and help to refine their skills for a life time of physical activity. The instrumental area, under the direction of Mr. Dana Hawes, includes the marching and concert bands, as well as a string ensemble and individual instrumental study. The classroom curriculum is aimed to accommodate three different kinds of students: the general student, who may in- clude the History of American Music or Electronic music in his studies; the college bound liberal arts and elementary education majors and the advance music majors, who would study music theory and composition under the capable guid- ance of Mr. Leonard DeMaio. Mr. Rocco Autorino, an accomplished vocalist in his own right, is the director’s chair when our mixed and select chor- uses take to the risers for a performance. The vocal class whch he conducts helps the students gain confidence in his sole work, improve his vocal technique, and realize the poten- tial of his own voice. Our expectations for new courses came through in spite of the eccentric meanderings of our en- thusiastic staff. Field trips, coupled with numerous exhibits have added spice to the already enjoyable art courses. We will miss those of you who are leaving us and hope you carry fond memories as you go into the “real " world. The Enfield High School Driver’s Education and Traffic Safety Department contributes its resoures to introducing young people to the highway trans- portation system. Preparing its students to be in- formed and active supporters of sound traffic safe- ty programs are the major goals of the depart- ment. Although driver and traffic safety education is only one force that influences operator behavior, it is probably one of the most powerful influences. The course, although it can’t change students style of life, it can change his style of driving. The Driver Education teacher is Mr. Jack Lyons. SENIORS SENIOF ) SENIORS Ph o £ SENIORS a President’s Message In reflecting on my three years at Enfield High School, I tried to pick out the aspects of high school that I would remember most vividly in the future. The most prominent memories in my mind were of the people I had shared my good and bad times with during high school. I consider the many people within Enfield High its most important asset. Through my experiences I encountered people of every type. The numerous times I have had to deal with different personalities has helped me to understand not only other people, but helped me gain a better understanding of myself. Learning to accept and respect individuals was a major part of my education. After we graduate we may never have to recall how to find the the square root of two or conjugate a verb, but we will always be dealing with people. I feel we, the Class of 1978, are very well prepared to obtain our goals and deal with all types of people. I wish my fellow graduates luck and success in the future. It means a lot to merely know a friend is by your side to comfort you when things go wrong and helps you stem the tide. It means a lot to have someone with loving heart and true a pal to share the smiles and tears as onward you pursue. George W. Bainbridge A I i hr J The Fire It was a cold brisk morning, February 9, at precisely 9:20 when the sound of the fire alarm echoed through the halls of our peaceful school. Everyone began to file out of their classrooms a little annoyed at the thought of having to stand outside in 30° temperatures. Then suddenly the odor of smoke began to per- meate the air along with a sense of uneasiness. Standing in the parking lot one could see dense clouds of black smoke billowing out from the roof of our school and we thought for sure the building was doomed. Our main concern was what was going to happen to our coats and books. By some miraculous miracle and the all night work of the janitors we attended school the very next day. Lamplighters, under the direction of Frank Gawle and Dick Celio, has been a tradition of Enfield High School for many years. There are also many traditions within this drama guild that have aided in the success of their performances. One is the tradition of caring which must be rebuilt each year by each new company. This consists of a genuine feeling for each other and for the show. Another tradition is that there are no small parts. From the actors to the set crew, every part is essential in the making of a whole production. This year, the Lamplighters presented the play David and Lisa. With a lot of hard work by both the cast and the crew the show was presented the first two weekends in March. The leads were portrayed by Greg Goguts, Anita Gagnon, and John Lyman. Also contribut- ing to the production’s success was the student director Kathy McGovern, the student pro- ducer Lisa Morgan and the many advisors and alumni. “THINK BIG, WORK HARD, AND HAVE A DREAM.” Bill Crosby Ricky Rossi, Lisa Morgan, Greg Goguts, Dave Carney, Kathy Me Govern and Tim Wood Millie Caruso and Lisa McElroy Advisor Mr. Frank Gawle John Lyman Moreen Staveski Hard at Work Noreen Staveski and Greg Goguts ilfKISfil After rehearsal Roberta Massev and Anna Troiano Carolyn Balinskas Joe Edwards and Anita Gagnon Ricky Rossi and Pam Muraszka Paul Fitzsimons and Pam Muraszka Ricky Rossi and Anna Troiano Anita Gagnon and Greg Goguts Dave Larson and Lory Wylot Mark Wakelin Kathy McGovern and Billy Whitley Jackie Kennedy Jeanne Marshall and Brian LaRoche Kathy Sullivan STUDENT SOCIAL COUNCIL Sitting left to right: Diane Luman, Judy Tracey, and Jane Jordan. The 1977 Girl’s Field Hockey Team, coached by Mrs. Kathleen Bromage, had a very success- ful season. They compiled a record of 9-5, good enough to secure the Raiders a berth in the state tournament and third place in the CCIL. The tremendous teamwork of the girls pre- vailed throughout the season. Eight of the nine Enfield victories were shutouts, indicative of an almost impenetrable Raider defense. Although this year’s team did not have a winning season, the dedication and perseverance of the squad was a credit to En- field High School. The highlight of the season was the team’s s participation in the Knights of Columbus Invitational Meet held on Columbus Day, in which three Enfield runners placed among the top fifty finishers. They were Mike Beck, a sophomore, Bob Albro and Jim Desro- siers, both juniors. The team is looking forward to an exciting season next year, with all of its members re- turning with the exception of Senior Bob Fel- tault. Sitting: Captain Mike Linehan. The 1977 Soccer Team, coached by Mr. Wil- liam Teed and led by Captain Mike Linehan, was a hard-fighting determined team that never lost spirit nor hope throughout their entire sea- son. Their overall record was 5-10-1. Although they did suffer some losses, four of them were hard fought games only to be determined in overtime play. The team proved their skill when they defeated crosstown rival Enrico Fer- mi High School, 5-0. Leading the charge was Junior John Rush who scored three goals. Sen- ior Tony Conte and Junior John O’Brien did their part, each scoring one goal in the convinc- ing defeat. Although the Soccer Team will greatly miss the contributions of Seniors Mike Linehan, Mark Donnelly, Tony Conte, Chuck Africano, Chuck Demurs, and Dan Keegan, the remaining juniors and sophomores show promise in bring- ing us a championship season next year. i Soccer Captain- Mike Linehan Mark Donnelly Tony Conte Dan Keegan Chuck Africano Chuck Demurs Bottom row, left to right: Manager Kelly Kates, Frank Neves, Rick Demontigny, Scott Silvia, Jim Cwikla, Jim Broderick, Paul Fitzsim-, mons, Dave Levesque, Bill Morin, Dave Skukowski, Paul Hughs, Gary Lemek, Bob Wood, Ben Stewart, Brian LaRoche, Tom Rhodes, | .and Manager Linda Coffey. The Enfield High School Football Team, despite a very discouraging season of one win and nine losses, never lost hope. A series of setbacks, mostly injuries, plagued the team throughout the season. Although this affected the playing ability of the team, it never dampened their spirits, namely their desire to win. The highlight of the season occurred on Homecoming Weekend when the Raiders defeated the Manchester Indi- ans by a score of 14 to 6. Many alumni were present to wit- ness the victory. At the Thanksgiving Day clash between Enfield and Fer- mi, played at Fermi, the Raiders were defeated by a score of 26 to 7. However, Enfield never gave up. Evidence of this was the touchdown scored by Gary Lemek on a pass from Jay Wheeler in the final seconds of the game. The team was coached by Head Coach Joe Bacewicz and his assistants Mr. Bill Wenzel, Mr. Ray LaFlamme, and Mr. Kevin Mayo. Leading the team as co-captains were Seniors Dave Skukowski and Bill Morin. Sue Latulippe The fall sports program was expanded upon this year with the addition of a Girl’s Volleyball Team. Because the spo was new to Enfield, it was necessary for the team members to learn the game starting with the very basics. This was a task undertaken by Miss Marion Dippel, coach of the team. Prior to the start of the sea- son, the team spent many long practices and hours of preparation to get themselves condi- tioned for their upcoming games. Senior Sue Latulippe acted as team captain, while Junior Kathy Stack served as co-captain. They led the remaining fourteen members of the team. The Volleyball Team consisted of a Varsity and Junior Varsity unit. While neither exper- ienced a winning season, they should not be discouraged. The team did not lack talent, only experience. With one year of playing behind them, the girls look forward to a much im- proved season next year. All the girls will be eligible to return with the exception of lone Senior Sue Latulippe. Volleyball Foreground, left to right: Co-captain Audrey Collard and Co-captain Cathy Bousquet. Standing: Joanne Zar zicki, Sue Sutter, Kim Lowe, Judy Finn, and Diane Merrill. Quality, not quantity, is the key factor in any group effort. No one proved this better than the Varsity Cheerleaders. Although they numbered only seven, they made up for their lack of num- bers by their spirit and enthusiasm. The squad was co-captained by Seniors Au- drey Collard and Cathy Bousquet. Other mem- bers were Senior Sue Sutter, and Juniors Kim Lowe, Diane Merrill, Joanne Zarzicki, and Judy Finn. In mid-November the squad was enlarged with the addition of Junior Michelle Ouellette and Sophomores Lynn Clarkin and Kim Hitch- cock. Miss Denise Fiedorowicz served as advisor to the girls. The Cheerleaders made various contributions to the school besides cheering for athletic events. Among the activities they participated in were the poster contest and Homecoming. In addition, the girls attended cheerleading camp at the University of Hartford during the sum- mer. 174 Cheerleading . The Enfield Boy’s Swimming Team is enter- ing a new era: an era of winning. This year, led by one senior, a talented group of juniors and some vastly improving sophomores the team broke the string of winless seasons, along with nearly every school re cord. With an overall record of 12-9, the team proved to be a powerful and de- termined group. Seniors Bob Feltault, Paul De- veau, Randy Chamberlain, along with the three captains set fine records throughout the season and also set an excellent example for next year’s new and returning underclassmen. The Enfield High School Hockey Team con- cluded their regular season with a 9-10-1 record. This record earned the Raiders a spot in Divi- sion II of the state tournament. One of the highlights of the season was their victory over Farmington by a score of 6-1 in the first round of the tournament. The team, coached by Mr. Phil Clarkin, was co-captained by Paul Hughes, a senior, and Tom Crompton, a junior. They worked together, without relying heavily on any one player to score. As a result, the Raiders occupied four po- sitions out of a possible nineteen spots on the list of top area scorers. They were: Tom Cromp- ton, Rick Fleming, Bob Hughes, and Greg Mas- sey. In addition to being ranked fourth locally, Crompton was Enfield’s top scorer, contributing seventeen goals and eighteen assists, for a total of thirty-five points. The Hockey Team looks forward to another exciting season next year, with the majority of the team returning. However, they will be los- ing four seniors to graduation. This year’s Girl’s Basketball Team, coached by Mrs. Bromage, had an excellent season. They handed defeats to such CCIL foes as Hall, Wethersfield, Manchester, Penny, and East Hartford. Most important of all their victories, however, was the clash against Fermi, played at Enfield High, in which the Raiders defeated the Falcons by a score of 49 to 28. Leading scorers for Enfield in this game were Senior Co-cap- tains Cindy Turcotte and Elaine LaVigne who contributed seven and eight points respectively. Chris Kindrew, a sophomore, added ten points to the cause. Every game played by the Raiders was a team effort. The starting five were veterans La- Vigne, Turcotte, and Juniors Chris Coughlin, a guard, and Alison Larochelle, a forward. Rookie Chris Kindrew, also a guard, compiled the start- ing five. A backup crew consisting of Tina Gea- chello, Sue Reynolds, Michelle Vezina, Lauren Kula, and Patty Keyes were always ready and willing should they be needed in a game. The 1977-78 Boys Basketball Team, un- der the leadership of Senior Co-Captains John Shirley and Tony Conte, displayed their perseverance and dedication to the game throughout the season. Although the boys did not boast a win- ning record, each game was a team effort on the part of Shirley, Conte, and fellow Seniors Jim Flower, Bob Whittle, Tim Ackerman, Dan Keegan, and Mike Line- han. Junior Courtney McLaughlin proved to be a very valuable player. Other con- tributing juniors were Ron Devine, Jay Wheeler, and Steve Kurmaskie. Coached by Mr. Robert Bromage, the boys suffered through a disappointing year, although there were some strong perfor- mances in the second half of the season.
