While we reach to attain our highest goals, we shall never forget the friends and memories that have highlighted our high school years. We hope, too, that we may touch in some way the lives of others we meet and in doing so, spread a little love and share a little happiness wherever we may journey. Seek those experiences that wall teach and fulfill the most; never be afraid to try. For the future is yours, and the key word is reach. Kathy Hare, Kathy Miville, Linda Ruel Echo Yearbook Staff 1977 Enfield High School Enfield, Connecticut Residing in me hills of Stafford, Frank Tay- lor lives in communion with nature. A raccoon at his doorstep is an expected happening with his home nestled in the woods. The hikes to Mt. Tom and to Quabbin Reservoir have taught his students to appreciate nature ' s beauty and solitude. Af- ter hikes, you can al- ways be sure to see a picture of yourself, for he is an avid picture taker. Yet, he peeks out from behind the lens long enough to lend his hand working on the prom, and of course, graduation. It’s di fficult to tell someone just how grate- ful we are for their un- solicited help. We know, too, that if we ever feel the need to talk, he ' ll always be there. Because of this, we, the Class of 1977, are dedicating our yearbook to Mr. Frank Taylor, with all of our hopes and visions of what ' s to come in our lives. Thank-you, Frank Taylor. • if. Learning to drive the family car without first destroying it, is one of the biggest tasks of our high school years. The man to whom we have dedicated our yearbook has attacked the job with vigor, although it has involved an abundance of time and patience. To him we owe our licenses and a small amount of independence. A simple thank-you is not enough, for with- out his help our only mode of transportation would be an outstretched thumb and a good deal of luck. Yet, the dweller of A -13 doesn ' t spend all of his time behind the wheel. He escapes just long enough to help with the homecoming floats, the senior proms, and of course graduation. Because of this, we, the Class of 1977, dedi- cate our yearbook to Mr. Jack Lyons for the guid- ance and counseling he has given us so freely. Thank-you, Jack Lyons . is born the same, it ' s the way we came Copyright 1971 Words of " Where the Roads Come Together ' UP WITH PEOPLE, INC. 3103 North Campbell Avenue Tucson, Arizona 85719 For life And there are many roads And there are Who don ' t see r There are many roads to go And they go by many names. Mr. Rocco Autorino, an accomplished vocalist in his own right, is the man in the director ' s chair when our mixed and select choruses take to the ris- ers for a performance. The vocal class which he conducts helps the student gain confidence in his solo work, improve his vocal technique, and realize the pjotential of his own voice . Rocco Autorino , Mr. Leonard DeMaio and Mr. Dana Hawes. The Music Department of Enfield High School encompasses three areas of specialization; instru- mental , classroom and vocal music . The instrumental area, under the direction of Mr. Dana Hawes, includes the marching and concert bands, as well as a string ensemble and individual instrumental study. The classroom curriculum is aimed to accom- modate three different kinds of student: the gener- al student, who may include the History of Ameri- can Music or Electronic Music in his studies; the college bound liberal arts and elementary education majors and the music minors, who would take His- tory of European Music; and the advance music majors, who would study music theory and compo- In an attempt to meet the changing needs and inter- ests of students, the Physical Education Department of Enfield High offers a wide variety of activities. These activities include many individual sports such as arch- ery, tennis, golf, badminton, handball, paddle ball, table tennis and trampoline. It also offers such team sports as speedball, team handball, volleyball, flag football, soccer, softball and field hockey. The Social Science ' s curriculum has been designed to provide choices for students taking the Social Sciences. It is hopeful that their choices in- crease the possibility for all students to make some meaningful contact with society and its problems. 1 BACK ROW, LEFT TO RIGHT: Mr. Dennis Corso, Mr. Joseph Bacewicz, Mr. Richard Celio and Mr. Frank Gawle. The Enfield High School driver and traffic safety department contributes its resources to introducing young people to the highway transportation system. Preparing its students to be informed and active supporters of soimd traffic safety programs are the major goals of the department. Although driver and traffic safety education is only one force that influ- ences operator behavior, it is probably one of the most powerful influences. The course, although it cannot change student ' s style of life, can change his style of driving . 1 Driver ' s Education Instructor Mr. John Lyons 1 I think you ' re allergic to morning ! 2 Mrs, Elizabeth Nichols, food service and man- agement 3 Miss Anna Parakilas , Enfield High School accountant 4 Mrs , Dorothy Gilmore , school nurse 5 Mrs, Carol Bruce, reading consultant 6 Mrs, Delores Green, health occupations and nurses ' aide program 7 Mr, Leo Porcello, resource teacher 8 Mr. Shawn Kelly, Special Education 9 Mr. Harry Zeroogian, Vocational Education A By continual evaluation of curriculum and con- stant search for variety of material, the English De- partment seeks to respond to the needs of Enfield High School students. They speak of our teachers, often unappreciated, who, in conjimction with our parents, endeavor to pass on their knowledge to these " know- it-all fledglings " . And so it should be, for it is only fitting that fond memories of youth should prevail, often perhaps, to carry us over the rough spots ahead. Graduation, we will find out all too soon, does not complete our education, be- cause the process of learning should, and will, continue throughout our adult life. For those going on to higher education, this is aU too obvious. For the others who will leave Enfield High for their vocations, it will become evident that new skills or Cui rent skills wiU require continued education. Challenges for the future are easily expounded. But make no mistake, the chal- lenges ahead for our graduating class rival those of past generations. How we prepare ourselves and meet those challenges can literally affect the graduating classes of our children and grandchildren. 1 trust that in the throes of graduation, we do not lose sight of future goals. I have been privileged to participate in the activities of the class, and wish my fellow grad- uates success in their endeavors and fulfillment of their ambitions. Marge Hendrie Class President . It involves learning that there are no stars - everyone is an important element of any show, right down to the person who opens or closes the curtain. This year, the Lamplighters has joined with the Music Department to present the Rodgers and Hammerstein pro- duction of " Carousel " . Due to the help of Rocco Autorino and Dana Hawes, the play was destined to become a success from the first rehearsal. With a lot of hard work done by both cast and crew the show was presented the first two week-ends of March. The leads were portrayed by Holly DeKam, Louise Dubois, Martha King, Chris Paulin, Dave Rucci and Joe Dignoti. Yet, the show would never have come to be had it not been for the stage crew, the student director Pat McMahon, the student producer Janice Carney and for the many advisors and alumni. The Lamplighters has been a tradition of Enfield High School for many years and will continue to be with the support of the students, the school, and the community. The 1976 Team ' s record of 4-9 displays their con- tinued efforts . Two sen- iors, Brendan Begley and Joe Cummings, qualified for post-sea- son competition. Joe placed 35th in the State Open and then went on to place 44th in a field of 150 runners in inter- state competition. This is an accomplishment unequaled by any pre- vious Enfield Cross Country runner . Other seniors contributing to the team ' s record were John Leader, Greg Pike, Matt Hazen, Bryan Berthold and John Cooney. The team will lose a large percentage of its members to graduation. De- spite what seemed like endless hours of prac- tice, they ended their season with a 3-10-1 record. However, re- cords can be deceiving. Six of the games were decided in sudden death overtime. Only the fel- low teammates know the time and effort that was put into each game. They learned that the accomplishment of their own goals was more im- portant than winning . The team was led by senior captain Marion Pazik with a backup crew consisting of J. Blomstrann, A. Bellida, L. Lagasse, C. Walsh and C. Fiore. Returning varsity players’ will be E. Desrosiers, T. The only returning starters were Captain Dan Sulli- van, Bill Taksar and Ken LaPointe. Combined with help from many seniors new to varsity play, along with some talented juniors and sophomores. The Raid- ers posted a season re- cord of 7-5-2. Seniors Ken Kula and Ed Malley were assigned rotating positions as the Enfield netkeeper . Placing fifth in a very competitive CCIL league, the Raiders showed much promise as they headed for the Class LL State Tourna- ment. They were met with a disappointing loss as Fitch High School de- feated them by a score of 2-0 in first round ac- tion. The team showed out- standing effort through- out the season and brought much pride to Enfield High. 175 KNEELING, LEFT TO RIGHT: Lori Belanger, Bernadette Healy, Debbie Cloughley and Lisa Bernier. However, this record in no way may depict the improve- ment shown by the team. Being non-existent last year, the girls came right back this year and gave their opponents suf- ficient competition. Against Fermi, they were defeated by a score of 96-62. Yet this is the smallest defeat that En- field has experienced against Fermi in the team ' s history. One junior member, Donna McKiernan, quali- fied for state competition in a freestyle event. The girls were not disap- pointed with their sea- son, they know what they need behind them is just a little more experience. As each year comes about, a little more ex- perience is gained. Los- ing only three seniors, next year ' s team will have many experienced swimmers and will look forward to an exciting season. Yet here at En- field High the squad has learned that cheerleading is giving, not only of skill and physical endur- ance - but of oneself. It is a full time sport with its own triumphs and frustrations, many of them unknown to a crowd of fans . Good sportsman- ship knows wins and losses, and through them all the girls never seemed to abandon faith. The thrill of bringing joy to a crowd is the ultimate reward that a cheerlead- er experiences . The 1976 Varsity Squad, led by co- captains Ann Kweder and Paula Dumais , gained many en- riching experiences dur- ing the seasons that they cheered together. Not only did friendships be- come closer, but they learned to respect each other ' s ideas and opin- ions, something to be re- membered by each girl throughout her future . r FRONT ROW, LEFT TO RIGHT: Tri-Captains Tim Kelley, Pete Moschetti and Bill Ackerman. Coach Ray LaFlamme and Head Coach Joe Bacewicz. The Raider Varsity- Football team, under first year head coach Joe Bacewicz, wrapped up their season with an overall record of 3-6-1. This year ' s team had their problems. They started off at a slow pace, losing their first three games . Then as the Raider defense held the powerful East Hartford Hornets to their smallest point gain in CCIL play, the team began to acquire an optimistic outlook. There followed a few narrow defeats and then 2 of the last 3 games ended on a victorious note. The final game on Thanksgiv- ing Day ended in a score- less tie. This showed de- termination on the part of the entire team, as the Raiders were considered underdogs in this game. Next year ' s team will have a fine example to follow, the determination shown by the entire 1976 squad. .At the beginning of the season with only five girls returning, Captain Marion Pazik, Kim Schneider , Linda Keyes, Cindy Turcotte and Elaine LaVigne, the Girls ' Basketball team had a great deal of practice, hard work and reconstructing to do in a very short time . The team was coached by Kathleen Bromage and Kathleen Gendall, with ample guidance from Mr. Carl Angelica and Miss Mary Para- chino who have attended each practice to assist the coaches . The girls have a powerful team with dedication, skill and patience, all of which are needed to face the pressures of compe- tition in each and every game. The girls were a fine representation of En- field High School and never showed a lack of spirit or drive in any of their games . li KNEELING, LEFT TO RIGHT: Cathy Fiore, Michelle Vezina, Chris Coughlin, Cathy Stack, Sue Reynolds and Michelle Beau- i! lieu. They experienced saddening defeats, but there were always fulfill- ing victories just when they were needed . The team, coached by Phil Clarkin, showed much skill and hard practice during their rink opposi- tion. Against many strong competitors , the Raiders made a fine showing . The team was led by senior Captain Joe Cum- mings , with outstanding play contributed by sen- iors Bill Ackerman, Frank Wadsworth, Mark Perreault, Alan Rotator! and Scott Leonard. Back- ing these players, also looking forward to next season, were many capa- ble juniors and sopho- mores . The team should be commended for their ex- cellent representation of Enfield High School and should prove to be a very well -followed team in the seasons to come. STANDING: Head Coach Phil Clarkin, Rick Fleming, Greg Masse, Paul Hughes, Murray Staples, Jim Mulligan, Tom Crompton, Ron Cudnick, Steve Morisette and Asst. Coach Bill Ferguson. Enfield ' s Varsity Swim Team experienced a very tough season. Competing in the strong CCIL, proved to be too much for the young team. With much guidance from Coach Robert Fenton, the team showed much im- provement over last year. Many times were improved upon and per- sonal goals were at- tained. This can some- times be as rewarding as a successful record. The team showed a fine effort throughout the sea- son and much diligence during practice and espe- cially at the meets. The Raiders are gaining more and more strength as each year goes by and should prove to be a very competitive team in the near future. DIVING BOARD: Alex Rosarier, Scott Franklin, Rick Whitty, Mike Kadis, Jim Folger and Carl Custer, f .A, very tough and dis- appointing season -- that was the story of the 1977 Raider Varsity Basketball team. First year coach Fran Aniello contributed much time and improved the discipline and skill of the team greatly. Being a young team, with little varsity experience, their record did not display the quality of play and effort shown by the team during their games. No one team member was out- standing; each player made an equal contribu- tion. Only losing two players to graduation should be a positive factor in the shaping of next year ' s team. With the exper- ience gained through this season, the 1978 Varsity team should prove to be much stronger competi- tion.
