ALL ASHORE, GOI G ASHCRE
On 1 September after hectic months of
preparation and training, families and friends
of ENDURANCE, PERSISTENT, CONFLICT,
and IMPLICIT gathered on the pier to bid
farewell. As orders were given to "single up
all lines" the brown was taken in and last
good-bys were said: Minediv 91 was getting
underway for Westpac.
Underway 1 September 1967 for WESTPAC

ATTENTION ON DECK
The 1967-68 WESTPAC deployment for USS ENDURANCE has been both suc-
cessful and memorable. We maintained an extraordinarily high level of readiness
throughout the eight and one half months we were deployed. We were the only ship
of Mine Division 91 which met every commitment on time.:S'CGa1'I1iHg OVQI' 41,4200 .
miles, we covered an unusually large part of the Pacific Ocean as a result of our
following the southern route on the way to WESTPAC and the northern route on the
way home. - y
While this deployment has entailed many, many hours of long and frequently
arduous work and endless hours of watchstanding, many of which were rather dull
and routine, it has not been without its accomplishment. We made three full Mar-
ket Time patrols averaging about one month on station each time, we came very
close to engaging in combat with hostile forces as we patrolled 1,000 yards off the
beaches of Tuy Hoag with our sister ships of Mine Division 91, we participated in
the clearance of suspected live minefields in hostile watersg we overcame adverse
weather and sea conditions to conduct an exhaustive search for a missing helicop-
terg and we made a major contribution to the success of a Fleet Service Mine Test
Our cruise was not all work, of course, and the memory of our "fun times"
will be with us for many years: swimming at Gab Gab Beach on Guam or in South-
west cove at Con Son Island, 'dunking our newly advanced shipmates, ship's parties
in Subic and Sasebo, visiting Hong Kong, and many other events will form treas-
ured memories in years to come. And who will ever forget our visit with our
"adopted daughter" Jocelyn Arzadon, when we visited Subic '? I hope this book will
help you retain such bright and pleasant memories of your ship, your shipmates,
and your many experiences during this cruise.
Without doubt, the crew of ENDURANCE was challenged by this deployment,
and there can be no question that the challenge was met successfully. Each and.
every man has done his job with his greatest competence and skill and I am proud
to have served as your captain. I look forward to the chance to sail with you again
in the future,
- Sincerely,
I Lf

PCFS or"Swift" boats were common
sights on market time. Also engaged
in anti-infiltration patrol, Swifts op-
erated close to the coast to take ad-
vantage of calmer seas. Occasionally
requested to "Daisy Chain" parts to
our sister ships, Swifts would deliv-
er much needed materials. Through
a series of transfers several gallons
of ice cream would always be in-
cluded for "Special" services.

AND BY FOR GOLDD I
During our first patrol we
were fortunate to be in an area
where many Market Time air-
craft were operating. The ap-
pearance of patrol planes on the
horizon was always a weloome'
sight as they often made low
passes and dropped "gold dust"
to the ship. For the weary
sailor "gold dust" meant news-
papers and magazines with news
from home.

ENDURANCE was commissioned in 1954 and through extensive modernization over hauls
remains ones of the most technically advanced minesweepers in the world. Designed to sweep
all types of influence and contact mines, ENDURANCE is constructed of non-magnetic ma-
terials and has the latest in minehunting sonar.
Many exhaustive hours were spent learning to stream gear and minehuntg dividends were
paid when we were required to sweep "live" mines, search for a crashed helo, and participate
in the Fleet Service Mine Test. Minehunting and minesweeping are very arduous operations
requiring everyone's teamwork and cooperation. Minecountermeasures operations may con-
tinue for a week or longer during which time a couple of hours sleep or a hot meal is a real
luxury.
