E MORY UNIVERSITY has not produced the writers which she might have produced. Thus it is that the editors, with some hope of inspiring those who might in the future develop into creative writers, have chosen for honor in this art mothc these five authors who have proved lasting in Georgia's literature and who are, in some manner, connected with this university. Augustus B. Longstreet, one-time President of Emory College, wrote those realistic little character sketches which serve as the State's chiet ante-beHum literary contribu- tion. Henry W. Grady, whose biography is being written by a member of the faculty and whose papers have been presented to the University Library, by his persuasive logic and eloquence was the great reconciler ot the sections after the War Between the States. Joel Chandler Harris, whose manuscripts and works are a precious posses- sion of the University Library, reigns supreme in the land of childhood remembrances. Corra Harris, constant friend to this Methodist institution, was able to catch the lite ot the itinerant ministry and present it with rare sympathy and humor. Finally there is Howard W. Odum, Emory's only son to be included on this roll, who has given a pene- trating study of the Negro race in his sketches of Black Ulysses.

DR. JOHN M. STEADMAN, JR. DR. THOMAS H. ENGLISH BECAUSE of their appreciation, encouragement, friendly criticism, and inspiration of Emory's youthful authors: because of the catholicity of their interests and their un- stinted service in many fields, and because of their unceasing etForts to construct within the University a more thorough and adaptable department of learning, it is a pleasure to dedicate this volume of the I935 CAMPUS to John M. Steadman, Jr., and Thomas H. Engiish.
