Holding down the feminine side of the athletic show is the Girls' Athletic Association. These active girls supervised by Miss Ruth Buettner have learned the fundamentals of girls' sports and have practiced good sportsmanship in their basketball, volleyball, and softball tournaments. Five hundred points earned by participation in the sports program make a girl eligible for a letter. More than twenty girls earned awards this year. In addition to their games the girls earned money by selling at ball games. They gave their annual all-school dance, the Spinster Skip, early in the year. Pictures are on the next page. It's a big name in "The Greatest Show on Earth" and for a good reason. Pep Club girls and their adviser, Mrs. Leona Sanders, are always ready to advertise our show, take tickets at ball games, or to make colorful blue and white pompons which have become a symbol of Huskie perform- anees. To be eligible for membership girls must be Sophomores, juniors or Seniors and must have at least average grades. Thirty-eight new girls became members by initiation October 13. A clan system was started this year to make it easier for girls to earn points for the coveted club emblem. Clan leaders were Gladys I-Ielzer, Sharon Brubaker, Gayle Bernard, Sharon Schiller, Bonnie Harrington and Shirley Evans. Senior girls were honor guests at the annual luncheon in May. Throughout the year the girls gave skits at pep assemblies, decorated goal posts for football games, gave cooked food sales to earn money, and performed many other services for Emmett High. Under the inspired direction of Mrs. Brown. vvho saw them through the lirst six weeks of rhc year, and of Mrs. Mathisen, who graciously took over from there. they gave many outstanding perform- ances. They entertained at the Harvest Dinner. the Armistice Day assembly, the Candlelight Service at Christmas and the Spring Concert. They took part in the Snake River Valley Music Clinic in the Qpring. This play brought to our show an entirely new type of act and won much praise for both players and producers. "The Curious Savagef' is not a cannibal, a head hunter, or an Apache Indian but a whimsical old lady whose name is Savage. She has certain curious habits and mannerisms which are seized upon by her greedy step-children as just cause for committing her to a private institution for the mentally dis- turbed. At stake is her late husband's immense fortune which the children want for themselves and which she insists upon spending to bring happiness to all sorts of unimportant people who have unful- filled dreams-often very foolish ones to be sure. The play concerns her life with the other guests living at the "Cloisters," where they are assured that the bars are "to keep the world out." It was a four-star performance and audience reaction was summed up by the person who said, .1 , , - You don t want to lau h at these eo le because the the all so sweet, but 'ou cant hel it.
